Things you never knew about Doncaster

In the days before the Cockney Mafia and Cosa Nostra (pre 19th Century) - the underworld, illegal gambling, wenches and moonlighting first started in a small place in South Yorkshire.

It was initially called Pebblewee but locals thought this was not strong enough for a place with such a strong reputation. Therefore in 1748, they name the town after the leader of the area...

Don Caster.

Upon his death (from exhaustion) the women of the town successfully petitioned to change the towns name in recognition of his sterling efforts over the years.

Each May Naturalists flock to Doncaster. The town is home to a unique species of bat that only comes out of it's roost during May to feed and mate.

The bat is so rare that it is only known by it's latin name: Eptesicus Doncasticus

Currently there are only one breeding pair known to experts. This pair live attached to the armpit hair of doncaster resident Howard Canstickle. Mr Canstickle, 47, only became aware of the bats when he discovered Kate Humble climbing up the inside of his beloved Iron Maiden t-shirt during a particularly popular episode of BBC's Springwatch.
