Pards quote on ITV Championship

edited August 2008 in General Charlton
Ive just got back home to Shropshire so apologies if im repeating anything thats said on other postings. I was gobsmaked to hear Pards comments on the programme which went something like ' Most people have us down as finishing about eleventh , personally Id settle for that'
I understand Pards wanting to dismiss any high expectations, but it seemed totally at odds with many quotes from players and Chappell written in the match day programme talking of unalterered high ambitions.I do understand Pards frustrations Im not sure such negative comments are healthy for the club though. I hope he is being more upbeat , positive and motivational towards the players.

  • I think he meant he would settle for people having lower expectations of us than last season, meaning there will be less pressure on us and teams won't come to the Valley 'pumped up' to play promotion favourites as we were last season.
  • Yeah I saw that, his comment amazed me. I do sincerely hope he was just trying to drop expectations and doesn't honestly believe 11th would be a good finish for us.
  • I hope your right Olly and it was just bad editing by the ITV, it didnt come across too good tho.
  • I think it was just a bit tongue in cheek and he'd be quite happy if people were playing down our chances. Last season we were favourites and we suffered for that. It'll be much easier if we are written off and can sheak in under the radar. I wouldn't read too much into that to be honest.
  • He's already said in the run up to the season that he would not settle for another mediocre 11th place finish. I'm sure he just wants the rest of the league's attention drawn away from us as 'promotion contenders' so, as LargeAddick said, we can 'sneak under the radar.'

Why does The Championship always show extended highlights of the game that Sky/Setanta screened the day before (ie Birmingham - Sheff Utd)?

Seems utterly pointless to me when anybody who cared would have already watched it?

As Olly said, I'm sure what he meant was that as most people expect us to be 11th and not among the favourites, that pleases him, because that takes the pressure off of us a little bit. He definitely is not aiming or expecting to be 11th.

Probably because there's more cameras at a live game, so that 10/15 minutes of coverage is better than the 10/15 minutes than you'd get at any other match. Sky/ITV wouldn't fork out for 7/8 cameras (or whatever) at every match just for highlights programmes, although I wonder if that'll change when the Sky/BBC contract comes in next season.

Of course, things have been different in the Premier League for a few years, where each match is covered by a minimum number of cameras for worldwide/delayed broadcasts.

Im glad you've all clarified that for me !
  • I've just read elsewhere that at the recent Q&A he actually said that when dealing with the media this season he was going to purposefully play down our chances so we were not put under too much pressure as some players struggled to cope with that last season.

  • yeah he is doing that on pursose,we all know him and us would not b happy with 11th place.but i personally think we will be in the play offs this season.

Ah, if thats right, that explains a lot. It's a difficult balance to strike between instilling confidence like Mourinho does and weighing to much on players shoulders.

There have been a number of comments made by Pards or attributable to him which smacked of downbeat/defeatism. If he is deliberately playing things down then that makes more sense.
