    Weaver - 6 ,1 top save
    Semedo - 6 ,bit slow
Fortune - 7, best game for ages
Hudson - 8, goal and captains performance and he hates palarse
Youga - 6 poor start got better
    Sam - 5 very poor
Shelvey - 6 great corners and an assist
Racon - 8 looked comfy on the ball drove hard all game
    Thomas -5.5 flatered to decieve
Varney - 6 worked hard but is not a striker imo
Gray - 7 only because the goal otherwise would have been a 6

Holland 7 usual self full of energy tightend up the midfield

Pards 8 got everything right including taking Jon Jo off at the right time, and got an extra point for signing bouazza
  • Thought Racon and Hudson were our best players.

Gray looks pretty ineffective at times, but he'll always be there in the box to put something away and that's why he is absolutely key for us this season. And he'll also be our top scorer.

Weaver - 6 - Couple of good saves, especially one in the first half when Swansea's tribute to Tattoo cut in from the left and tried to curl it into the bottom corner. Bad fumble at the end nearly cost us though.
Semedo - 7 - Solid. Feel he's definitely a better bet at centre half
Fortune - 7 - Solid as well. Never gets any respect but is a far better player than most give him credit for.
Hudson - 8 Very impressive debut. Lost his marker for the goal, looked comfortable all game in the middle and not caught out when he was forced out wide
Youga - 6 - Quality challenges and looked OK going forward, but his passing is atrocious
Sam - 5 - Poor. Looks completely lost whenever he has time to think about things and can't cross a ball for toffee.
Shelvey - 6 - Gets a six for the corner alone, that was a peach. Other than that he looked what he is - young. Playing against a five man midfield he had no time on the ball, but never shied away from a challenge and didn't shirk his more defensive responsibilities
Racon - 6 - Like him as a player, but Swansea dealt well with him all day.
Thomas - 7 - Still not a better player in this division running at full-backs. Looked much more 'up for it' already than at any time last season
Varney - 7 - Ran his nuts off all game. Charged the ball down on at least four occasions, but should have scored at the end
Gray - 7 - Took his goal well, and plenty of graft, but played too far away from Varney for much of the game. Reminds me of Andy Hunt (only not as good, obviously).

Holland - 7 - Really changed the game when he came on - we had much more shape to our midfield with him in it.
Basey - 6 - Great ball in for Gray's goal.
Bouazza - 5 - Not on long enough to make an impression.

Pardew - 7 - Got everything right, but surely will want the midfield to play more cohesively. Well-times substitution, he saw Shelvey was tiring and took him off at the right time
  • 6s for all EXCEPT

Hudson 7 - Looks a leader and solid. Took his goal well.

Fortune 7 - Universally derided and answered his critics in the best possible fashion by showing just what a good player he can be.

Semedo 7 - Played out of position yet you wouldn't really have known
  • agree 100% with Leroy...

    Ratings:

Weaver 5 --- spilled at least two shots, but t least kept em out

Smedo 5 ------ slowwwwwwwww as this site today
    hudson 7------- solid
Foutune 6----------solid will be better if he knows Hudson is there
Youga 6 ------------ defended well passing was awful

Sam 5------ one good effort looked lost for most of the game.
Racon 6---- overwelmed for much of the game
JJ 5--------- alittle lost needs someone to tak the wight for awhile
Thomas 6--------- looked good in first half. did nothing second half

Varney 6------ run himself into ground. should have scored at death
grey 6---------- not a target man. worked hard.

Holland 6---------- made alot of differance when he came on

We seemed a yard slower than Swansea. Playing numpty teams in pre season hasnt helped. They played footie , we got the result.

21,600 ok gate. Their support 9/10.
  • Weaver - 6 Didn`t hold a thing....benefit of doubt due to conditions
Semedo - 7 Solid if unspectacular. Not a lot of pace which will prevent him becoming regular at fullback
Fortune - 7 We all know that he can do it. Very solid today
Hudson - 8 IMHO man of the match. "Upon this rock" etc etc
Youga - 7 When he`s good he`s very very good. When he`s bad he`s horrid
    Sam - 5 Sorry.....Just horrid
Shelvey - 6 What Pards said.
Racon - 7 Did well enough..not sure he is the answer though.
Thomas - 7 Once our central midfield takes shape...Thomas will open up all sorts of space for them. Oppo double up on him.
Varney - 7 No real service or defence splitting passes for him to use his pace. Work rate phenominal.
Gray - 6 Well taken header. No link up play from midfield means he looks isolated.

Holland 7 Thought he showed why he was player of year last term.
Basey 6 Looks solid. Good cross.
Bouazza 5 No time to make judgement
  • cant see thomas being here come 31 aug
  • In the know nss ?

    Yeah doh lol
  • Overall I think everyone should feel they can play better than they did, but should feel satisfied with a win against a pretty good side. We were better organized at the back and kept our shape. Still look a bit clueless going forward. Not enough movement or penetration. And they seem to go to sleep just before and after half time. Whatever you team talk is Pards, change it. It works like Mogadon.

Weaver - 6 - a couple of good saves but too many fumbles
Semedo - 7 - Defensively pretty sound though clearly its not his position
    Fortune - 7 - Solid. Well played.
Hudson - 7 - Good goal and leadership
Youga - 6 - Better defensively but still poor going forward (when will he learn you can't run through players?)
Sam - 6 - Attacked well a couple of times and brought a good save out of the keeper. Just didn't do enough of it.
Shelvey - 4 - Bypassed for the first half and tried too hard the 2nd. Will improve and probably learnt a thing or two.
Racon - 7 - Good all round display
Thomas - 6 - More roasting of fullbacks and no end product
Varney - 5 - Good work rate but poor touch and lack of composure near goal
Gray - 6 - Looks slow and doesn't get in the box enough, but took his goal well.

    Holland - 7 - calmed things down.
Thought Basey did well when he came on too. Great delivery for the goal.

Weaver - 6 Couple of odd moments but ok
    Semedo - 6 solid enough
Fortune - 7 solid, could do without some of his hoofs
Hudson - 8 motm. Similar to McCarthy in some respects but with a brain.
Youga - 7 could become a cult hero if he cuts out the odd rash moment
Sam - 5 Has he had an injury?? Didn't seem match-fit really struggled to get up and down
Shelvey - 5 Was surprised he didn't get to frips with the pace of the game but this will do him no harm IMHO
Racon - 6 Good when going foward but gets knocked off the ball far too easily
Thomas - 6 Looks great in the areas that don't matter and can't provide the killer cross/pass. Probably last game for us. For 100k been a great signing but has driven me nuts for the past 2 seasons. Can't see him doing it at Burnley away. . . .
Varney - 6 Worked hard, needs a goal for his confidence
Gray - 6 Took his goal well but seems invisible half the time

Holland - Looked very eager when he came on, glad he's fit (you wouldnt catch me saying that 2 seasons back. . .)
Basey - IMHO, Will eventually become a great holding midfielder, but like Gareth Barry.
Bouazza - Look very left footed. Anything with 2 arms and 2 legs would keep us all happy at the moment. . . . .

Overall no-one was awful and no-one really stood out either. Swansea didn't control the game for 90 mins as Martinez says. Right load of old cobblers that.

They were toothless up front and the Centre Halves struggled with the pace of the game

Overall MOTM was their tall lad, Pratley?? Thought he was excellent.
  • Weaver - 6 tempted to give 6.5 as he made some good stops but was also a bit dodgy handling
Semedo - 6 solid, unspectacular but did make a mistake that led to a dangerous cross
Fortune - 7 made some good blocks and was generally very solid, backed off their strikers a bit at the end tho
Hudson - 8 absolute rock and made every ball his own when near it. goal was a bonus
Youga - 7 solid defensively which is a better aspect than any attacking play he delivers, and he did do some of that too
Sam - 5 pretty anonymous, tried hard but delivered little
Shelvey - 6 tried hard and made the odd pass but their midfield had us so he didnt get a chance for any space to show his attacking play
Racon - 6 did well and showed some really good moments but was part of the losing side of the midfield battle
Thomas - 6 did some really nice runs but nothing came of them
Varney - 6 chasing but no end product from a couple of chances to run behind
Gray - 6 fairly anonymous in an attacking sense apart from his goal

Holland - 7 steadied the ship and turned the game back in our favour

Pardew - 8 all of his team selection and subs i agreed with. altho the game situation didnt allow it would have loved to see dicko given the chance to show his 'devilishness' or whatever pards called it for varney

i think the conditions didnt help us and neither did their formation. should have some confidence from this and push on tho.

All in all a very good performance from the team rather than a few individuals. I really liked what I saw of Racon and I hope he is not dropped come next Saturday, because that would be harsh!
  • edited August 2008
Weaver dealt with an incredibly greasy surface and wet ball he kept a clean sheet

Varney's work rate was exceptional he closed down players and helped out in midfield. Importantly it raised the crowd as we respond to a trier and he managed on several occasions to get them to give possesion away cheaply or to give away a corner. Running after scraps is what we have wanted for ages and now we have got one there are complaints. The keeper made a stunning save IMHO from his last minute effort.

Shelvey was out of sorts in a 5 man oppo midfield the experience will make him stronger. Racon was justifiably trying to shore him up and that impacted on his game

Holland really did steady the ship and you could see the whole team respond and be lifted when he came on, I was in the crowd

Overall I was pleased a satisfactory performance, 3 points against a team with a winning mentality, a professional job well done

Good to see Holland's influence on the team recognised.
  • Weaver - 7, couple of dodgy moments but slippery surface, been out injured two weeks, couple of good saves
Semedo - 7, did well not in his natural position, would like to see him at CH v Yeovil to see if he can cover there
Fortune - 7, if he can keep that up then great and Pards says he and Husdon have gelled, but big IF
Hudson - 8, thought he was calm and collected, no nonsense, didn't panic, no rash challenges, great goal, hates Palace
Youga - 6, unsteady at start but got better, doesn't get much help from Thomas, better with Basey in front of him
Sam - 4, and lucky to get that and only did because of a shot in the 1st half, no pace, doesn't beat anyone, hello Bouzza !!
Shelvey - 6, think some are a bit harsh with their score, was outnumbered in midfield but gave his all, will learn a lot from that
Racon - 8, thought he was asked to sit a bit deeper which is not his natural game, better when Holland came on, good all round performance though
Thomas - 5, no end product, fancy stepovers a plenty but no crosses or shots, didn't once beat a man, constantky comes inside and then passes to another player, wouldn't mind if he then actually ran at the defence or had a shot but he doesn't, Bouzza on the right and the more effective Basey on the left for me
Varney - 7, no service from the midfield or wide players, worked his nuts off, chased lost causes
Gray - 7, worked hard too, got his goal so can't ask for much more, 3 in last three home games, going to be a big player for us this season in my opinion

Holland - 7, showed why we need him, when Jonjo and Racon tire Matt can come on, batten down the hatches and provide much needed experience. Even if Bailey signs Matt more than has a part to play. Reception he got when he came on speaks volumes, can't see why some fans don't like him.
  • "didnt once see him beat a man" - He beat their right back at least twice.

As someone who was saying he wasn't any good, I'd also like to recognise Holland when he came on. He definitely had a presence in that midfield.

Varney - 7- but he could have scored at the end (their goaly was good though)
Gray - 6- apart from the goal , he didnt do loads

Holland - 7- he plays loads better in this league than the premiership
