[cite]Posted By: LenGlover[/cite]I know it was important to shift big wage earners off the books but how can Luke have doubled in value in a year?
I'm guessing Len but wouldn't it be partly explained by the differing lengths of contract?I suspect Luke had only a year to go on his Charlton contract but several years on his Boro one. Therefore it would cost more to buy him out (which is what a transfer fee is in reality).

I said around the time we sold him that he had to be worth £4-5 million. He had only signed a new deal the previous summer and was an international with 200 odd premiership games under his belt.
I appreciate we were under pressure at the time however to get him off the books.
Luke Young is definitely underrated, but there are some bizarre inclusions on that list:
Corluka: slower than Chapple
Carlisle: all over the place during Burnley's away games
Baines: great player, but been in the England squad recently so hardly underrated
Clarke Carlisle is rated by journo's because they think he's A1 clever, and makes very cerebral soundbites for them. i think he's a very good champ defender, I don't think he is a long term prem players; Burnley may last a season in the prem as will he. To be fair to him Burnley are atrocious whole -team defensively, were in the champ and are now. By that I mean players can cut through their lightweight midfield at will, which away from home is especially the case. Sol Campbell was atrocious in the Spurs teams when defensive midfielders - after David Howells - everyone blamed his partner but he was shit because players ran at him apace from deep. No defender past maybe the one in a hundred, a la Paul McGrath or Ledley King, really copes with that.
Personally I think all the list shows is that an average full back can exist in the prem if three other defenders are excellent positionally, and you have at least two midfielders who are competent at covering. I wonder why we went down Mr Faye, Mr Thomas, Mr Rommedahl and Mr Ambrose. Any canny manager on a budget should look to bed down full backs, sell them and do the same again. Whilst moving heaven and earth to keep spine players like Cattermole, Turner and Hangeland at your club. Just look at the very average fb's Wham have made a profit on including McCartney and Pantsil.
McCartney looks prem standard but why would you ever sign a prem standard fb for 6.5 million? I don't think average is harsh, he's just not a player that will stabilise you in the top six; good enough if player's around him are competitive if not then his performances will suffer. Personally, might be biased, Luke Young would not embaress himself in the champions league even with an average defence around him. That to me is a sign of a player better than average, and one indicative of how all too often full backs are mis-priced negatively as all too often players are who're not flashy or goalscorers
Luke can also cover anywhere across the back four and when playing left back, he can actually kick it with his left, unlike Carragher who had the England utility job but only used that foot for standing on.
How is Young underrated, he's consistently played in mainly average or above average prem clubs, played for England various times and didn't over impress on the international stage.

I don't know what England games you were watching, but he did not look out of place to me. He's underrated in as much as some people would consider Micah Richards to be a better defender than him, which is absolute bollocks.

I think we undersold him but only by about 500k. He did have a really good season with Boro though. 6m is a bit OTT though.

Good point!
I thought I'd found something to moan about :-)

Good finisher too
