Ground out win or attractive draw?

So, what would you prefer against the Swans - a dull 1-0 win with few chances and a scrambled winner? Or, a 2-2 draw from an end to end tussle with Charlton playing attractive and competitive football from the start and being unlucky not to win.

Give me 1-0. We need a good start.

  • ground out win........ every time.... every single time... as shankly said 'winning is not everything its the only thing'
  • Win Win Win! When we look back at the end of the season we'll forget we ground it out and just see that we won 1-0 and bagged 3 points.
  • Take the points...
  • With the number of younger players it is important to start with a win to sustain their initial confidence - so any win will do!
  • The 3 points of course....more important to get off to a good start points wise...the attractive end to end stuff can come later...hopefully!
  • but this is supposed to be an exciting league and pards will play attractive football and we'll win 4-0
who wants boring curbs style ground out victories , not for me thankyou

    'Supposed to be'

What is your definition of 'exciting'? (apart from Paul Mortimer of course)

I'd say it's not knowing who's going to finish in the top four, unlike The Premiership. Therefore it is more exciting than the Premiership, wouldn't you agree 'oohaah'?
  • i'd say the build up to playing barnsley and swansea is 'exciting' as opposed to the dread of playing man utd or arsenal
  • just trying to think of 5 exciting games from last season and struggling really.still if you think it's an exciting league then good luck to you.
  • I'd take a point from the exciting 2-2 draw, where we've played open, attacking football.

    reason why?

If you continue with this you are more likely to win games than you lose - winning a dull game 1-0 by scrapoing a last minute goal (sound familar0 may seem good at the time, but you are more likely only going to win a cuople of those a season and most likley lose a lot more

  • actually a fair point from golfie, last minute winners are great but had too many for and against in the last couple of seasons. Personally I would take a scrappy win tomorrow, something for the youngsters and (hopefully) new players to come in and build on

don't forget the excitement each morning before loggin on 'tinterweb, wondering which player/coach/tealady has been sold/lost their job, and being able to bid on e-bay for a half eaten banana found in the ref's dressing room after a reserve game versus colchester.
much more exciting than the financial security of the prem.

i'll take the 3 points thanks.
  • The first few years in the prem, yes it was exciting. Waking up the morning of an Arsenal, Man U game etc was fantastic.

But the last couple of years in the prem, when you knew going into those games you were about to see us get beat and dominated for 90 minutes, no it was exciting. I was fearful and enthusiastic as i knew we had little chance of winning.

I wouldn't swap for one moment how i feel now, ahead of a competitive game against Swansea we have a chance of winning, for a non-competitive game against Man U.
  • each to their own but personally i'll take the amazing feelings of build ups/ victories/draws/thrashings received against man united, arsenal, liverpool and chelsea over the barnsleys, swanseas, blackpools of this world
  • The choice is...be a big fish in a little pond, or a little fish in a big pond.

Hopefully if we do get back to the Prem we can be the team we were from 200-2004 or so, and not the one we were over the last couple of seasons, when results against the big teams had considerable rarity value.
  • People have forgotten the joy of a hard fought 1-0
  • Me, it dont matter who we play, I just want Charlton to win!!

    Come you Reds.................

what about Arsenal away 4-2 chelsea at home 4-1 Liverpool at home 3-0....Curbs was the best thing that ever happened to this club amazing how so many people have short memories on here.....
  • oooahhh was being sarcastic. When he's not boring everyone to tears with his whining about our poor away following, he's pining for the halcyon days of Curbishley's assault on the Prem. That's what he does, he's only got two tunes.

  • i know what i would take.
  • another exciting thrilling game...so much better than the curbs era
  • That was definately a ground out win
  • Away from home in teeming rain on a slippery pitch like tonight, sod the aesthetics take a ground out win.

At home I like us to play with more flair though, no matter what the climatic conditions are.

Who cares, we won away from home. How often did that happen in the last couple of seasons under Curbishley?

An away win is an away win and it makes me laugh how rather then be pleased by a win someone takes it as an oppertunity to bitch about how it was better getting beaten playing some of the most mind numblingly negative football imaginable
    under Curbishley.

who isn't pleased by the away win , i think everyone is , just like everyone was pleased under curbishley ....
but i would hardly call our football since curbs left any better or not so mind numbingly negative and we are playing lesser teams but then that's my opinion and it's as boring and as worthless as yours
  • But, equally, we have some lesser players, so we have to keep a sense of perspective.
