Who will be the unsung hero this season?

I can see Varney getting the goals, and perhaps Hudson the player of the year award for shoring up a defence that went AWOl a bit too much last year, and Shelvey will generate a lot of headlines for his precocious talent, but which player will be the one who performs consistently well without much drama or being noticed?

I think Andy Gray will be our unsung hero - doing a lot of link work and setting up chances for Varney to finish.

  • Matt Holland, of course ....... he's the one who performs consistently well without much drama or being noticed.
  • Therry Racon with Kelly Youga not too far behind.

Hmm, consistent in his effort - Maybe(the past 2 seasons, or what he has played of them anyway, lets not go beyond that). But consistently WELL? Hmm, runs a lot, no start or end product though. He has always kind of been unsung, only in the past 2 seasons has he approached 'hero status' for some & had that 'hero' label tagged on to the unsung bit.
If he plays regularly I think he will severely damage his current status for his fans.
  • Racon for me too as long as Pardew doesnt sell him to Plymouth or Brighton
  • Jon Fortune if he stays
  • Len i must admit you are persistant with the fortune
  • Not really meaning to open up the Matty Holland debate again, but the player has many qualities that he brings to the table - and that's why all his managers consistantly pick him.

What he does need is to be paired with a complimentary and physically stronger midfield partner - and that frequently hasn't been the case under Pards.

He won the POTY award by a street last season, and even if there weren't that many players seriously in contention that time, Holland still received three-quarters of the vote, voted by Charlton supporters who at least could appreciate his contribution.

Anyway, my comment was meant to be flippant and in context with BFR's post: " .....but which player will be the one who performs consistently well without much drama or being noticed?"

And of, course, some supporters don't notice Holland's contribution, do they?

    ;o)
  • Matty was an easy target for some last year especially at Ipswich away (GRrrrrrrrr the fecking moaning brigade out in force or what) we could have gone down without his effort and commitment last year.

top bloke top pro and deserved winner of POTY

Matty is an example of what a professional footballer should be in terms of his attitude on and off the pitch.

However he was never good enough to be the main man in midfield. Internationally he was at his best when Roy Keane and our own Mark Kinsella were playing alongside him. When he first came to Charlton the likes of Parker, Claus,Graham Stuart even Kish were there to help.

He is now 34 and although I don't doubt he is willing, I fear for our prospects if we have to play him in the majority of our matches.

We expect him to be a hardtackling ballwinner and he has never really been that and I agree with those who say that his status will be damaged if he has to play regularly.

In my view he should perhaps be on the bench to come on with 20 to go away from home when we are trying to hold a 1-0 lead and as an "old head" talk the youngsters like Jonjo through it.
  • Some good points for and against Matty, Len.

  • Too many "un-sung" heroes for me. We need to sing more of our players' names in games this season. I've seen many a gem of a parody on here for this player and that, but rarely do they take off.

It'll be Ambrose for me. He'll score his fair share, make his runs and create space for the front two, assist a few and yet still not get enough credit.
  • Cory Gibbs will continue the consistent presence in the Charlton eleven that he is renowned for.....

The bottom line is Holland isn't good enough and quite frankly in a Charlton shirt, never really has been. For all his qualities, none of them relate to his on pitch performances. Giving him a new contract was a drain on resources that we could ill afford.

As for his POTY award, I think that can be sumed up by a comment I heard in the Con Club, "it show's how bad we have been this season when Matt Holland gets player of the year" Does anyone really believe that he got that for his on pitch performances?

As others have said, if he's a regular starter this season then mid table is probably as good as we can expect.

I think that Semedo could be a big player for us this season, if he is given the chance. Thought he was excellent in the holding role at the start of last season.
  • Pardew
  • BDL

i dont agree with a word mate the reason he got POTY was because he worked tirelessly on the pitch never hid and faced his critics week in week out.

Semedo was cack imo last year he gave the ball away in bad positions he held it too long with out passing and couldnt hit a barn door (excuse the pun) with any shot

that said i wouldnt call him a drain on resources as he can get better but only with players like holland alongside him

strange how 2 people can see 2 players so diferently
  • I seem to recall that most people were giving Semedo good reviews for his performances at the start of last season and it was only after he was (unfairly imo) dropped to make way for Holland and then brought back as a bit part player that his performances suffered.

But each to their own NLA, It would be boring if we all saw eveything the same. ;o)
  • not wrong and AFKA wouldnt be half way to his 10th million squid without it

Holland is a central midfielder who is in no way creative and who you could never call a ballwinner. He just runs a lot (and he's lost that now, at 34).

Charlton fans have always shown generous appreciation to the try-hards. But any good - he ain't.

    (Top bloke though.)
  • so why did he win poty?

  • should we have kept marcus bent? he is a better footballer don't you think?
  • [cite]Posted By: ThreadKiller[/cite]so why did he win poty?

    Realistically who else was there?
  • so if he was the best player in pardew's side,i don't understand how getting rid of him would be to the benefit of charlton.
  • Amdy Faye, he's gonna knock 'em bandy
  • Like every other player in the side, he's not perfect .....BUT the manager always picks him, POTY voters voted him runaway best of the bunch - yet some people can't see what he brings to the side.

Oh well, perhaps he does fall into the category of ".....but which player will be the one who performs consistently well without much drama or being noticed?"

And that was the question, after all.
  • When we played Palace in Feb I brought a few mates along who all supported Prem teams and all said they would gladly have Youga in their squad judging by his performance, and yes he is rather inconsistent proved by how he played against Plymouth but I think if Pardew gives Kelly the light of day this season and consistently starts him he could be our unsung hero this year and with Hudson could sought out our rather dier defence, we might in the near future even get a healthy profit from the lad!!!
