  • Been playing some Smiths' stuff today. Massively under-rated band. Here's some more classic material:

    Smiths:

    Reel Around The Fountain
    The Queen Is Dead
    I Started Something I Couldn't Finish
    Girlfrind In A Coma
    Sheila take A Bow

    Mozza:

    November Spawned A Monster
    Ouija Board
Last Of The Famous International Playboys
Last of The Gang To Die
    Irish Blood, English Heart

    Johnny Marr:

    Good Morning Beatiful (The The)
Armageddon Days Are Here Again (The The)
    The Beaten Generation (The The)
    Get The Message (Electronic)
Fly Trapped In A Jar (Modest Mouse)
  • His best lyric "Nature is a language, cant you read?"

    From "Ask Me"
  • "Let me get my hands
    on your mammory glands,
and let me get your head
    on the conjugal bed"
  • There Is A Light...
    Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
    Girlfriend In A Coma
    Panic
    Reel Around The Fountain

Went to see Springsteen recently and the phrase "...the music that he constantly plays says nothing to me about my life" kept springing to mind.
  • would have to go for:

    1. Wannabe A Smurf Star
    2. Smurfs Get Upside Your Head
    3. Smurf It Up
    4. Smurfs Are Coming Home
    5. Keep On Smurfing

Oh!!! you meant The Smiths.... he he ;-) would be a cool duo tho, popa smurf and morissey, bit like bing crosby and david bowie.
  • Panic
Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me
    Sheila Take a Bow
    William It Was Really Nothing
    Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
  • How has Handsome Devil not been mentioned?
    Tut tut.
  • IAIA
    edited September 2010
There is a light that never goes out
    How soon is now
This night has opened my eyes
    Suffer little children
William, it was really nothing -edit- no, change it for Still Ill.
  • Smiths:
    There is light....
    Half a person
    Still ill
    Paint a Vulgar Picture
    Asleep

    (couldve picked 50 others....)

    Moz:
    National Front Disco
    Suedehead
    Everyday is like Sunday
    Lost
    Now my heart is full

    (as above)

Obviously, they're miserable and boring blah blah blah

I'm delighted you don't like The Smiths.

    Phew.

    Phew.

I know people who know say you are slow but even so, two years?
  • The Smiths are very hard to cover. Marr too good and Morrissey so difficult. Count me in though.

Hatful of Hollow - the most exciting album I've ever heard. Every track is a throbbing masterpiece.
  • I was there and I saw them:

    Bigmouth Strikes Again
    Reel Around The Fountain
    I Started Something
    Girlfriend In A Coma
A Rush AND a Push and the land that was yours and mine...
  • Johnny Marr was a genius - Morrissey complained about them selling meat in the farmers' market. Front page news, that was!

I'm not aware of that many Smith's songs being covered, but this one sprang to mind for some reason:

  • Best Smiths cover - Quicksand's version of How Soon Is Now. Completely different - and completely awesome.
  • Haha, when I clicked on the link I was wondering if it was the TaTu version of How Soon is Now... and it was. :D

I'm a big Smiths fan, and How soon is now is one of my favourite songs, but I don't think that's a terrible cover. It is what it is, and you get the sense they're not really sure why they're singing it, but an OK song in its own right. Probably because it's a majority-Marr song - the music matters more than the vocals, and even though the music is a bit OTT in the TaTu version, it's fine.
  • Joking aside I quite liked that version although it does sound as though they are on helium when they are singing it.

I managed to find a Cd version of Meat is Murder in a charity shop the other day (makes a change from all the Take That solo crap and other dire plastic pop shite that generally appears in charity shops), it's battered as fook but plays perfectly and it's an original 1985 Rough Trade issue rather than a modern Wea issue- very happy with that! My old Lp was getting a bit worse for wear (but still plays), great album. The Smiths- True Class!
  • 1. Still Ill.
    2. This Charming man.
    3. Reel around the fountain.
    4. Please, please, please (let me get what I want).
    5. The boy with a thorn is his side.

I'm slightly disappointed that so few people have mentioned Johnny Marr, a guitar hero and musical genius in my eyes. His contribution to British music over the past 30 year is massive.

  • 1) What difference does it make?
    2) Bigmouth strikes again
    3) How soon is now?
    4) Rusholme ruffians
    5) The queen is dead

Definately my favourite band, unique and awesome.

    The queen is dead

Not really a band for kids of today but I still listen to the Smiths, much to the teenagers disdain when I'm being Mr Taxi.
  • 1)Ask
    2)I know it's over
    3)Asleep
    4)I want the one I can't have
    5)Still Ill
Favourite lyric : " I wear black on the outside 'cause black is how i feel on the inside, and if i seem a little strange then that's because i am." Unloveable
Now where's that link to the "Morrissey genius or twat?" thread?
