Pre Season Friendlies

edited July 2008 in General Charlton
A Spurs mate reckons that we are not prepareing ourselves that well for the coming season with the lack of decent opposition and we should be challangeing sides nearer th equality of the championship so far we have played

Bromley
Dartford
Welling
Ebbsfleet
Braintree
Gibraltar
With one more game out there
Brighton
Dover

And the real challanege being at the Valley

Is he right does it matter ?

  • think we should be playing the like of southend......gillingham.....millwall.....you have just as much chance getting injured playing lower level teams as higher..so play harder games.....be interesting to see what other top champ teams play ...anyone know...it may be the norm to play local weak teams to get fitness up....Dartford cannot count as no 1st team squad playimg......
  • a more important concern would be flogging off our crown jewels and replacing them with non league gambles..
  • Just looked at Birmingham, they have Leicester/Gillingham and Fulham

    Plymouth- Swindon, Dundee, Yeovil, Nuremberg
  • Who has Palace got?
  • Palace going to play with themselves...as alll...........
  • Badger posted on another thread:

"Salisbury City Fans Arrested by police after violent clashes marred their friendly with Southhampton,Saints fans ambushed at railway station, sounds familiar?

Altringham vs Man united friendly is abandoned with 4 minutes to go after 50 so called Man u fans invade pitch and attack Altringham Player."

So Southampton were away at Salisbury.
    Man Utd away at Altrincham.

So puts into perspective, Charlton playing the same type of friendlies at this stage of the season?
  • Why listen to a Spurs numpty anyway ?
  • who gives a toss what some muggy yid thinks.

Sorry to quote my own quote (first sign of madness, obviously ......!)

Crystal Palace won their friendly the other night ............ against mighty Tavistock Town, who play in the South Western Peninsula League!

    Crystal Palace: J Speroni, C Hill, S Derry, P McCarthy, J Fonte, C Andrews, N Carle, S Scannell, P Iffil, T Soares, B Watson, D Butterfield, D Flahavan, J Dayton, J Smith, J Enti, J Comley.

As you can see, it was a strong Palace lineup - looks like their 1st team to me - starring our Player of the Year runner up,
Mr Patrick McCarthy. Speroni made a good save.

Palace play pre-season friendly at Man U at Old Trafford - linky

Well, we do know that in the same week as we play Dover, Palace played Tavistock Town.

    ;o)
  • I started a thread a few days ago saying our pre season was crap and got slaughtered on here for it. I still think we should be playing Div 1 sides mostly. Not waiters in Gibraltar.

  • I'm inclined to agree with you, Shooters.

But just pointing out that The Champs teams seem to be playing their fair share of non-league at this stage of the pre-season.
And we don't appear to be any different.
  • Look at Cardivs (for any Jacks still nosing about)pre season

    it includes Cetic,Boro,Ajax

who have we got Fecking welling,Dover,Bromley,Ebbsfleet

i stayed out of the other thread cos it annoyed me

Cardivs is the calibre we should be aiming for not the shite we have yearin year out to be honest it has wound me up for years
  • the best pre season we've had in a while was 2 seasons ago with dowie.......hibs, millwall, malaga, new zealand, germinal beerschot, utrecht, plus welling and a couple of other non league sides
  • I agree that the teams we've been facing haven't really been of a particularly high standard, but its been said elsewhere that you can't tell how good the pre-season is until that actual season is underway.

We may have played had some good attractive fixtures a couple of years ago with Dowie, but that didn't really count for much at the end of that season when we got relegated.
  • Does anyone remember that Utrecht game? The barstewards kept us in the ground after the game had finished, then herded us onto coaches which were supposed to take us to the station. Then the coaches drove out of the city and dumped us at some station in the middle of nowhere. All accompanied by a police escort. There were some very unhappy fans at the time, I thought one bloke was going to chin the copper!
  • The half time Pizza Pods were lovely
