PC help required please

Home pc has been knackered for the last week. Takes ages to boot up, everything is running slow, and when i connect to the internet, it says its connected but only brings up 'page cannot be displayed'.

Not sure whether its a wider pc problem or related to my internet provider, if it was just the internet provider then why has everything else slowed right down ?

Don't have the zone alarm thing, so not connected to that, but co-incidence that its happened at the same time. Have McAfee Total Protection, and when i run a scan on that it says that everything seems to be fine.

What should i do ?

    Have you checked your internet settings in internet options, ie, your dialling or connecting into the right dialler/LAN connection, password or user details missing from info etc?

    shouldn't the mcafee scan be doing that ?

    if not, how do i go about doing that ?

    Besides running your AV software (making sure it's all up-to-date of course:

    Ad-Aware 2008 from Slysoft (Personal edition is free) and will pick up all sorts of nasties.

    JKDefrag is a free defragging application that will also speed things up.

    Try uninstalling old unsued apps too.

    AFKA try using 'system restore'. It's already on your PC (XP) and will sort these things out 90% of the time. Just restore to before you had the problem. Try and keep off those 'special interest' sites :-)

    Download a Anti Spyware program - Spybot Search & Destroy or anything made by CA are good options.

    I wouldnt bother with system restore, general causes more problems than it solves.

    AV isnt all that, I'd suggest spending a little money and getting yourself a decent spyware/anti virus/firewall package, or just stop looking at midget porn.

    If you keep it up to date and run regular scans, maybe. Nothing is 100% though.

    Back up any important files that you've added in the last week.

    download the trial version of pc tune up utilities at http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/, and go through all the clean up and checking options on it, can take a while but usually restores pc's to as new speed, i'd also ring isp to go through internet settings option as DA9 says

    Does this clear your cookies like c-cleaner- 'cos that's a pain......

    AFKA- lavasoft free is a good anti-spyware programme..........

    AFKA - head into WHSmiths on the way home, and have a look at PCPro, Computer Shopper etc. The cover discs will usually have free or trial copies of stuff like AVG antivirus, Spybot Search and Destroy, Adaware and other useful tools like backup software, defraggers etc. If you're really lucky one of them will be running a feature on troubleshooting / tuning your PC.

    I'd suggest checking how full your C-drive is, going into firefox, Internet explorer or whatever and clearing out your temporary internet files, download history and any cookies for sites you don't know about. Also see how big your C:\temp directory is and clear any old stuff out of that. Following that up with a defrag should help too.

    Just a suggestion but this wouldn't be the cause??
