Semedo a centre back?

edited July 2008 in General Charlton
I had him down as Keith Jones mark II with a similar physical stature!!

Is he really centre-back material?

  • he was signed as such

played his 1st game fro chrlton at Tooting and mitch last season at centre half and did ok.

Jones was 5' 7" and Semedo is 6'

I think he's more of a RB or CM.

Maybe his second year in England he will have settled and be more consistent. Could be the answer to our defensive midfielder problem.
  • looks a bit slow and short for CB

I prefer him as a holding / breaking player
  • I don't think we know what he is. Surprised Curbs hasn't poached him, as you can't get more utility than this guy.

I like Semedo, but i have a nagging fear that he may prove a jack of all trades, master of none.
  • I like him, and I think given a bit of time he could be a very good holding midfielder.

Sometimes when he's on the ball he does something and you think how good he could be, then a minute later, he gives it away trying to pass it 10 yards.

There is definitely talent there, it just depends on whether we can get it out of him. Sadly I think that could also be said for about half our squad.

like most of the newer players he needs 20 or 30 games in a settled side to really show what he can do but I'm not sure we can afford to give players that much time.
  • He was brilliant before he unfairly got dropped for Holland just before Christmas. Since then he didn't find the form he had at the start.

I wouldn't have said brilliant but he was solid in most games and did the water carrier role. He had a stinker at Palace where Racon looked class when he came on for him. Another enigma.
  • yes call me cynic but those less enigmatic players that put in brilliant performances every week generally cost big dough..

    :)
  • Played for Portugal under 21/under 18 as a centre half....certainly has the stature for it, but not that commanding in the air. I like him myself and agree that he was unfairly dropped pre-xmas, and that he didnt get a decent run thereafter....maybe Pards wont be quite so tinkersome in the coming season

  • He's filling in till Magic is back, good cover, won't do him any harm to revive his skills a bit.
  • A six footer may get away with playing centre half in Portugal but not over here with long balls and physical forwards. Interestingly both Semedo and ZZ had storming starts to the season but neither cut the mustard playing along side Mr Clean Shorts. The worry is that with less than a month until the season starts, we have only three proper centre halves, one of which is attracting bids from several clubs.
  • If Bougherra does go prsumably we'd sign Sodje - as he's out of contract he'd be a free.

Jones was 5' 7" and Semedo is 6'

And that just goes to show that you can't believe everything you read on the club website, eh Henry?!
    If he's 6ft then AFKA is 8ft 2in!!!!
  • He's the same height as Cannovaro who's the best I've ever seen in that position. He's also a bit taller than Perry who rarey let us down and he gets stuck in good and proper. If he can gain the positional sense and game reading, there's nothing to stop him being quality. Best of last season's signings IMHO, though he never got to play in a settled position (maybe a bit in midfield, but never had a decent partner, post-Reid).
  • we still need another centre back for back up whether magic goes or not. imo semedo is decent enough back up for centre back and right back, as well as a decent enough defensive midfielder as long as he gets back the form he was in at the beginning of the season.
  • I think he's poo and we should get rid.
  • this is desperate times....the club is in bits. I cant believe we will only have Hudson Fortune (useless IMO) and Semedo left if Magic goes. Shocking! I prefer Semedo as a holding midfielder. Surely we have to get someone on season loan

I don't believe he is out of contract.
  • Sodje isn't out of contract, but he's not good enough anyway. Really just can't understand why so many people say we should sign him, he's an average Championship centre back, nowhere really near a Premier League player.

I thought we played in the Championship? Very few Prem standard players would move to the CCC, if for no other reason than that they r Prem standard players and will want to play in Prem!
  • Semedo is one of those guys who looks much smaller on the box. I was surprised what a big powerful bloke he is when I saw him play live.
I don't think height would be a problem, as someone said, Chris Perry was only around 5' 9" but rarely got out jumped.
Anyone remember seeing Alan Simonson at 5' 5 beating centre halves in the the air?
  • Semedo's limitations in the air were exposed in the home game against Sheffield Wednesday.

He is not good enough to play as a centre half in the Championship although he is fine in the midfield "Mackalele" role or even as a full back.

Sorry but that's rubbish. Perry was nearly always outjumped, which was a shame because he had a great footballing brain and would have been a top class centre half if it wasn't for his lack of height. I dare say Semedo would have the same height issues as Perry at centre half.
