I went to see Slade in the late 70's at Goldsmiths College. They were considered a bit naff at the time as punk was in it's hey day.
As the the 80s Skins there were some pretty bad post punk bands like the Angelic upstarts and the Red Skins and some nasty racist crap from the like of Screwdriver. Worth avoiding IMHO.
The redskins were politically slightly to the left of Fidel Castro, never in the racist camp. I thought they produced some good R&B (in the 60's sense) type stuff in their day, try and find 'Unionise' or 'keep on keeping on'.
The clue with the Red Skins might be the "Red" bit or of course they may be named after Siting Bull i guess ?
The Business were another "skin head" band. They were local , one guy coming from Barnehurst and not political as such.
Tose people slagging off the skins might also want to remember how many times at away games they stood with people who were from The Welling Skins etc in the 1980s. Birmingham being one place i remember that after the game when hords of Birmingham came to (again) brick the coaches confronting them was the welling Skins and two very very large skin heads (one still goes to all the home games) were at the front. Those very very very nice Birmingham people didnt fancy it and went on their way.
Is anyone on here old enough to remember some hippy type guy that used to sell the "underground paper" called OZ on the coaches ? It wasnt about the metro system in kangaroo land !! It was banned as porno at the time.

The 'School kids' issue! The thought of Rupert bear doing what a bear would naturally do (no, I don't mean in the woods!) was too much for the establishment at the time. How things have changed.
One of the defendants in the OZ trial was Felix Dennis, now a 'respected' magazine publisher and author.

I thought Kick Over The Statues was brilliant. Like a modern day, upbeat Ozymandias. Fantastic brass sound as well.

The three publishers were found guilty and were carted off to prison having been sentenced to hard labour, but won their appeal.
Felix Dennis went on to form Dennis Publishing and is now one of Britain's richest men, this after being described by the judge as being "very much less intelligent" than his co-defendants...
He also claims to have been the first person to say "cunt" on British TV.
The new book by John King 'Skinheads', although fictional, will give you a heads-up on the music and culture.
It's not his best book but still a worthwhile read.
And for those who might be put off by the fact that King wrote 'Football factory' - this is not hoolie-lit or a trash re-write of the past, but much more a look at the culture over three generations. If you've read any of his other books, Human Punk, Prison House etc, then you know what I mean already.
