CL Managerial Cup: Nigel Pearson v Darren Ferguson

edited June 2008 in General Charlton
Pearson is looking to get back into management after what many consider to be harsh treatment by Southampton after ensuring their survival. Helped keep Carlisle in the league back in 1989, indeed it was him who brought Jimmy Glass to the club. A number of caretaker and assistant roles have followed in the nine years since, Pearson is keen to lay down a marker with a permanent managerial position.

Darren Ferguson seems very much a new kid on the block, yet has managed more first-team games than Pearson. Appointed Peterborough manager in Jan 2007 after a run of six straight defeats, he led them to 10th in the table, before leading them to 2nd in the table and promotion in 2008. Ambitious, and keen to progress, many are tipping Darren to follow in his father’s footsteps and achieve great things.

REMEMBER: You are voting on who out of the two on offer you would prefer to be Charlton manager.

  • Big split so far, interested in people's views why ?
  • I went for Darren, just an irrational dislike for Pearson. I really have no idea/reason why just looking at him aggravates me so this was an easy decision!
  • Think Mr Ferguson will really go from strength to strength, anyone getting promotion with Barry Fry's got my respect
  • Pearson hasn't really done anything. Fergie Jr has got Peterborough promoted and would be able to tap dad up for a few younger players...
  • I think Fergusons contacts through his old man will prove invaluable as time passes
  • Darren Ferguson...I think he'll achieve more, most of Pearson's success has been down to fire-fighting rather than developing clubs.
  • Like Red Army have an irrational dislike for pearson.

Ferguson was found guilty and fined for assaulting his wife just 5 months ago. If he had a different surname, i'm not sure people would back him so much.

I think Pearson has served a decent apprenticeship, with West Brom, Newcastle and England U21 on the backroom staff, he has excellent knowledge at very different set ups. Done a good short-term job at Southampton, and i think the next club to give him a permanent chance will move forwards.
