Biology lesson

Shocking lack of knowledge on this board as to where the human heart is.

It's in the MIDDLE of your chest NOT, as some seem to think, over on the left hand side.

BTW If you are a man over 40 and/or overweight carry a couple of aspirin in your wallet. At the first sign of chest pains take them. They will thin the blood and may just save your life by preventing or lessening a heart attack.

  • As someone thats over 40, slighty overweight and just going out for a meal and few beers at the the end of a hard week, I would.like to thank you for that snippet of information....................................
    ; )
  • I was just about to put a pizza in the oven.
  • Its just off to the left though henry, or left of centre..............mine is anyway!?
  • And while your takin your aspirin for your heart attack be carefull not to cut yourself coz you'll bleed to death quicker............

Let's hope you never have to give CPR to anyone.

    It's in the middle,

The left side is slightly larger than the right normally but it is in the middle

Unlikely unless you open an artery.

the blood will clot before you'd bleed to death unless you are a member of the royal family.
  • Just havin a lend of ya henry, bit bored.

Gunna wikky the heart thing now...............give me something to do?

Anyway royal blood is blue, yes!!
  • was always taught it was more on your left than right.

Hemophilia is a congential illness in European royal families, possibly passed on by Queen Victoria.

It's a very rare inherited bleeding disorder. The blood does not clot normally so even the slightest cut may result in death.

In the human body, the heart is usually situated in the middle of the thorax with the largest part of the heart slightly offset to the left (although sometimes it is on the right ie dextrocardia).

The heart is usually felt to be on the left side because the left heart (left ventricle) is stronger (it pumps to all body parts).

Not strictly true Henners. The left side is larger so the bulk of it's mass sits to the left of centre

Yep, excellent advise and will buy time as that's exactly what a paramedic will often give. Daft though, that First Aid at Work regulations prevent a first aider from giving even asprin...

Why? Surely no-one would try and give CPR on an area other than the middle, would they?

That's my point. The heart is in the middle of your chest so that is where you'd press.

Side point: My wife laughs about CPR. As a cardiac theatre nurse she's been there when they've open some one's chest, cracked the ribs, whatever, to get at the heart and get it beating.

She's even held a human heart out of the way so that a surgeon could operate "underneath" it. She says when it is pumping it's like having some punching your hand every other second.

    Enjoy your dinner.
  • She's welcome to that job mate... I'll stick to CPR and defibs from the outside thanks ;-)

Defib scares the s**t out of me. I know it works, but the thought of stopping someone's heart....

Always wins hands down when you say "I've had a shit day". "Yeah, so did I. Had to open a chest and...." "OK you win"
