Just interested to hear the general consensus on Halford, because I know in the past he has split opinion.

Personally, I like him. I think he's good in the air, strong, and can pick a pass quite well. I also like the way he bursts out of defence quickly on the break. I certainly think he's a lot more than just a long throw.

Admittedly I've missed some of his shockers (I've seen a few too!) but I still think he could turn out to be a good player for us if the move was made permanent.

Do people think this is likely, and would it be a popular move?

I agree that he isn't bad but you always know he's prone to an error or two. I think his heart is in the right place, he looks like he wants to try and improve himself but for me there is still a question mark over him. The problem is if he did come to us on a permanent transfer how much would we be willing to pay? IMO I don't think he's worth anything more than £400-500k but Sunderland paid £5m for him and you will have thought that they would want to recoup as much as possible.

I don't really rate him personally. Mind you, I also don't think that right back is his most natural position, which can't help.

Actually I think he only cost Sunderland £3.5m, but he's not worth even half that and clearly while he has a few question marks over his ability perhaps he has more over his temperament- he didn't settle with Reading either.

If he were to sign it'd have to be on the right deal - no more than £500k, but I suspect that Sunderland will want him back/want to flog him on for more than that.

I think he's burned his boats, and anyway he's out long-term injured.

Some thought he burnt his boats with us back in 98/99 but he came back.

His starts up to the Hull came lifted us and with him and Reid made us look better than we did without them

Off the top of my head we won 10 league games with Mills in the side, 4 with Halford in the side. Not saying we have gone downhill pre Christams is due to this change, but what we looked like on the eye the stats back up.

Correlation does not equal causation - how many of those games would we have won if Mills had been in the side?

I think that Mills left/Halford joined and our form took a dip is a consequence of weaknesses elsewhere.

With Reid without Reid, same argument, But not saying Halford is the future, but I am sure Mills is not, his indiscipline cost us points, it was not just the Hull game, he came back to that game having been banned after picking up a booking for some stupid pushing offence.

As for Holford, £500k is about right, but before we invest in himlets look at Moo2, Sankofa and who else is going to be available on the market in the summer.

For a player with his experience Mills lost it a few too many times in his short stay with us. At this level given that he was contracted to a Premiership club he should have been massive, but he let his temper get the better of him. What that tells me is that maybe he considered Charlton a place to pick up a wage until something better came along, rather than resurrect a career.

Johnny H2, presumably you didn't see North London addick's comments a couple of weeks ago when Mills alledgedly admitted to him, that he got sent off on purpose in his last game, so he could have Xmas oop North with his family and wouldn't have to play for Charlton.

I accused him of that at the time and although I originally wanted him to stay, no one would have him back now.

Prefer Yassin as I believe he has more potential.

Really hated Halford at first but he has improved. And if Yassin leaves and we can get Halford on the cheap then I wouldn't mind him signing.

If we're signing the player i saw against Palace then great but he was truly awful when our season was falling apart. We'd be taking a punt on a very fragile player.

I think he's been OK. I would like to see him bombing forward more and when he does get forward try to improve his balls into the box.

If there really was a problem behind the scenes Pardew should have done what he's payed to do and pull him. If we sign him and he's layed his demons that's great but his performances contributed to our collapse which still sits pretty badly.

as a footballer I think he is very worthy of a permanent deal, however I think centre midfield is his position not right back

That was a classic.

Think he has all the attributes to be a good player as the big fees paid for him perhaps show but he makes errors amd can look poor as his failure to win a place at Reading or Sunderland perhaps also show.

he also has an eye for goal and his height give us something.

If we could get him cheap or free then great as he can battle it out for his place with Semedo and Yassin but if Sunderland want to re-coup their fee then no way.

He gets caught out far too often with the ball played behind him as he pushes on too far.

Plus not sure he has the 'mental strength' we need to get up. . .

Perhaps, if we can't afford him and Sunderland can't recoup their £3.5 mill or whatever they paid for him - then we get him on a season long loan, next season..... ?

I can't see Sunderland getting more than a million for him from any club, so they might settle for the season long loan.

I think hes looked both good and awful in his time with us. We ve got moo2 and Semedo can play right back so our limited funds would be better used to strengthen elsewhere.
