anyone agree ? I don't. If there is no money to keep Powell on in a coaching roll then why spend it on an aging player like Thatcher who now isn't even that good. Youga and Basey are good enough to battle for that spot and if Youga plays then Basey can always play wide left. Thatch out IMO.

Youga and Basey are both better players
Usually he offers fairly reliable positional cover, his strength is in his tackling, a decent cross, the steel and determination often lacking in the character of other players.
I am sure this is how Pards values him above all else.
But whatever he brings to the team in the way of experience, I now feel that in his 34th year his lack of pace is a liability. Also, Thatcher stands in the way of the progression of Youga and Basey.
He is not the future.
He'd better sign a new one pronto, or it's back to Scunny for him.
absolutely dire since his return, particularly at Plymouth/QPR/Barnsley
Perhaps Pardew's reasoning is that long term he sees Basey as more of a left winger, particularly as he is a good crosser of a ball, and he feels Youga still needs time to develop but IMO Thatcher, if he stays, needs to up his game.
I thionk Youga is a great prospect and has put in some good performances, but he does allow his confidence to drift into arrogance and complacency, which puts the defence under pressure. he also has a bit of a fuse, as witnessed following his tussle with Best and Holland had to calm him down. Things for him to work on this summer
Chrissy Powell could have been given that player coach job for Ben's money
I can only think that Pardew might see Thatcher as being one of those types of players, but personally I'd be disappointed if he stays because I don't think it will help us progress. Besides that, his performances haven't really warranted a new contract in my opinion.
If he had saved us from relegation, I'd have had him as a hero, but after his initial few games he then turned to type at Balckburn was irresponsible and done little since when not injured, would rather have had Gibbs than Thatcher, at least he never let us down on the field ;-)
Pretty much how our see it. Also let us down badly at key points in the relegation run-in in my book, particularly as he was specifically brought in for his 'experience'.
Youga and Basey are the future, not Thatcher i'm afraid.
Once Millwall, always Millwall.
