Thatcher to stay ?

anyone agree ? I don't. If there is no money to keep Powell on in a coaching roll then why spend it on an aging player like Thatcher who now isn't even that good. Youga and Basey are good enough to battle for that spot and if Youga plays then Basey can always play wide left. Thatch out IMO.

  • God I hope he goes, has done nothing for us, and has said he wants away so lets fulfill his wish
  • Get rid of him he is useless
Youga and Basey are both better players
  • Youga and Basey are cheaper, are the future and Thatcher doesn't offer anything they can't offer.
  • On what I saw today, Basey's best position is left midfield. Nothing fancy, just good cover for Youga and can deliver a decent cross. No room for Thatcher anymore, IMO. I thought Thomas looked more at home on the right today, as well.
  • I wouldn't say Thatcher is useless - but he is weak in the air and shown recently to now be lacking in pace.
Usually he offers fairly reliable positional cover, his strength is in his tackling, a decent cross, the steel and determination often lacking in the character of other players.

I am sure this is how Pards values him above all else.

But whatever he brings to the team in the way of experience, I now feel that in his 34th year his lack of pace is a liability. Also, Thatcher stands in the way of the progression of Youga and Basey.

    He is not the future.
  • Youga's contract running out also stands in the way of Youga's progression!

He'd better sign a new one pronto, or it's back to Scunny for him.
  • Pardew says he wants him to... he's having a laugh please somebody tell me that was a tongue in cheek comment?!

absolutely dire since his return, particularly at Plymouth/QPR/Barnsley
  • I thought Pardew's post-match press conference had all been good news up until he said he wanted to hold onto Thatcher!! Why oh why do we want to keep hold of a 33yr old left back, who let's not forget is injury prone, when we've got two talented left backs ready to fight it out for that spot?

Perhaps Pardew's reasoning is that long term he sees Basey as more of a left winger, particularly as he is a good crosser of a ball, and he feels Youga still needs time to develop but IMO Thatcher, if he stays, needs to up his game.
  • Who knows, hopefully they've offered Youga a new contract, but maybe he's stalling on signing it and if he does get offers from elsewhere then we'll need a LB.

I thionk Youga is a great prospect and has put in some good performances, but he does allow his confidence to drift into arrogance and complacency, which puts the defence under pressure. he also has a bit of a fuse, as witnessed following his tussle with Best and Holland had to calm him down. Things for him to work on this summer
  • He hasn't had an easy time at the club - signed by Curbs several years ago and then forgotten and loaned out to teams like Scunthorpe. Had Thatcher and then Basey not got injured it is likely he'd never have have made a first team appearance and he'd have been released into the care of the community when this season and his contract expired. maybe he needs to mature a little, but he needs to be cut some slack - he knows he has to make the most of the few opportunities he gets and perhaps that's why he tries to do too much.
  • I'm not sure what Thatcher adds really.

Chrissy Powell could have been given that player coach job for Ben's money
  • Pardew has recently said in a couple of places that losing Reid (no more Reid comments please!) and Todorov had a big impact not just for their ability on the pitch but for their mentality for the big games.

I can only think that Pardew might see Thatcher as being one of those types of players, but personally I'd be disappointed if he stays because I don't think it will help us progress. Besides that, his performances haven't really warranted a new contract in my opinion.
  • I can't see why we'd want to keep him. He is injury prone, he doesn't give us the drive we need down the flanks, we have Youga and Basey, if necessary Semedo can play their. Get rid I say.
  • I think Thatch will go to keep the wage bill down and my bet would be QPR.
  • I don't care where he goes as long as he goes. We signed him from another Prem club when we were in the Prem so I'd guess he's on Prem wages. That money could go towards keeping Alfordi or re-signing Sir Chris.
  • We can't afford Alfordi or Powell's wages as a player who probably won't play much. We need to reduce the size of our squad and our wage bill.
  • Out & out thug, never liked him, liability and tarnished, not a Charlton player

If he had saved us from relegation, I'd have had him as a hero, but after his initial few games he then turned to type at Balckburn was irresponsible and done little since when not injured, would rather have had Gibbs than Thatcher, at least he never let us down on the field ;-)

Pretty much how our see it. Also let us down badly at key points in the relegation run-in in my book, particularly as he was specifically brought in for his 'experience'.

Youga and Basey are the future, not Thatcher i'm afraid.

    Once Millwall, always Millwall.
