  • Basey playing midfield another player out of position
  • A young looking squad, with Shelvey starting, Wagstaff on the bench, no Thatcher, instead Youga comes back, with Basey in midfield. Ambrose and ZZ are injured so Thomas returns, and Andy Gray get's a start alongside Varney.

Powell on the bench, presumably to add a bit of experience just in case and if not hopefully to get a few minutes in what is likely to be his last game as a pro.

He sometimes plays defensive midfielder for the reserves.

Undoubtedly, Powell on the bench to play his last game in a Charlton shirt and get the plaudits he so richly deserves.
    What a true professional.

Lets trust we get to see his victory 'jack in the box' tunnel celebration one last time!
  • Yep, let's hope Powell gets the opportunity to out on a high.
  • hope so to how many are on here tonite

What conclusions can we draw from this squad?

First, that Magic & Paddy are 1st choice centre backs.
Fortune nowhere in sight, I've not heard of any injury, so Pards has told him he can go?

Sodje on the bench so maybe there's a chance he'll be signed for next season, possibly.
Halford starts again, I feel he will definitely be offered a contract here.
Youga - new contract on the table?

Thatcher seems gone, no new contract, I assume.
Thomas, the surprise element - unless with Sam, Ambrose, ZZ all injured, Pards feels he has no choice but to play him, bearing in mind it's most unlikely he'll be here next season.

Basey can play fullback, of course, plus centre back and centre mid, so quite a versitile player.
The fact that he's starting left midfield tells me that he'll be covering Youga's strong overlaps as well as getting forward in his own right. Maybe in the same way that Powell and Konchesky used to work together.

Racon recalled early from Brighton, but no place for him.
  • C'mon you reds!!!
  • I thought Racon would of been on the bench
  • A shame there's no place for Racon, given that Pardew has favoured Basey and Thomas ahead of him in midfield I think perhaps it's an indication he'll be joining the summer exodus.

  • I would of started with Sodje instead of McCarthy as well

But why recall him from Brighton, only to leave him out?

Doesn't make sense - unless his carrying an injury or attitude/not impressed Pards in training this week

I belive Pards thinking here...... he prefers to have Magic because he likes to play the ball out of defence
  • Thats why I would play Sodje excellent in the air
  • Sorry, Perthy ..... misread your post. Sodje for McCarthy, sure .... like for like in my book.
    Crossed wires!
  • Are we winning yet?

    Why not?

    PARDS OUT! Booooooooooo........

It might be down to Brighton not needing/wanting him once they were mathematically unable to secure promotion.

Also Pardew seems to have wanted to put Powell on the bench for his last game, given the cover we have for left back with Basey able to drop back if needed that looks for better or worse a sentimental decision. Sodje is named as the defensive cover, that leaves Wagstaff and Iwelumo and no place for Racon.
  • not many on here today

  • Palace 2-0 up vs Burnley who are down to ten men.
  • Any indication of what the crowd is like?
  • The @live' update on the OS describes Varney's goal:

4 minutes: GOAL! The hosts are off to a flying start as Madjid Bougherra's long ball picks out Luke Varney on the right and the striker coolly lofts the ball over Kasper Schmeichel, who had charged off his line. 1-0
