Richard Rufus

Posted this elsewhere but deserves a thread of out own.

I met Rufus at a function on Saturday.

Total 100% diamond bloke. What a perfect gentleman, couldnt do enough for my kids etc etc

Totally loves the club to pieces and said "I don't want Charlton be another Leicester, Sheffield Wednesday...struggling"

He's 33 and looks 23. I pleaded for him to get his boots back on, but his knees were fooked bigstyle.

Top top man and wish he was with us now :o(

Mccarthy/Bougherra et al aren't fit to lace his boots.

  • What a shame he didn't truely fulfill his potential - he was England class - no doubt. I remember watching us play Newcastle at St James Park in the League Cup in the mid nineties. He marked England's no 1 striker one Alan Shearer out of the game. He was a magnificent defender.

Great to hear that he's a top bloke as well.
  • Sorry Binga he would have gone on to play for England if he hadnt had those injuries. There was a very strong rumour that arsenal were looking at him big time just as their solid back for Adams,Bold etc were finishing there time.

That is what I mean't GH. He would have been an England player, no doubt but for the injuries.
  • What's he doing now Falc? Did he go into the ministry?
  • The last great player not to play for England. If he was slightly younger and wasn't so injury prone he would of gotten in to Sven's squad no problem.
  • He's dabbling in a bit of property and does his charity work.

Really grounded and balanced bloke and always has a smile on his face.

Wish we had someone of his class still involved at the club.

Just remembered that he said he was shocked when he heard about Reg leaving as Reg kept the
whole thing together at Charlton. He's worried it's all gonna go pear shaped.

    Don't we all!
  • one of curbishleys 'babes'... a top quality player and a nice bloke as well
  • Falconwood my mum and dad went to the same function at Blackheath Rugger club- they said excatly the same about Richard.
  • Richard Rufus is a real Charlton Legend, when that word is used far to often.

    A little example of him

I used to help run the Herts Beds and Bucks branch of the CASC, we held meetings in Aylesbury.

Richard Rufus was the only player who was prepared to come to do a Q&A, what a lovely bloke- so gentle and unassuming, Just drove himself to Aylsebury from Sevenoaks ( i think) no fee, just to talk to a few Charlton fans.. Arrives a little early, whilst we are running the business part of the AGM, sheepishly knocks on the door and waits for someone to let him in, would have quite happily sat outside on his own...

Great Bloke and I hope whatever he does works really well for him.

Oh and one thing else, that tackle at WHL!!!!
  • Sir Les Ferdinand being launched down the seven sisters rd is one of my most memorable moments as a Charlton fan

it was actually Rufus' first game back as well after doing his knee at Ipswich in the second game of the season wasn't it?

  • yes!

The smile on Richard's face when it was described to him was a delight.

He said something like " well i had to test the knee"
  • that is THE finest tackle ever bar none in history.

Absolute beast of a centre half - had everything - pace power , great in the air, and could play a bit. Never ever saw him get skinned, never ever saw him bottle a tackle which was probably his downfall with his knees.

    Totally agree.
  • deano

    Humphrey Costa Rufus Young

know that would be a world class defence.
  • My Favourite ever Charlton Player. Never had the pleasure of meeting him but watching him was always a joy, being a centre half means you always tend to watch the players in that position in more detail that any other. The Guy's game was flawless distribution apart for a centre half, proved his loyalty by being a one club man, can you imagine anybody at any other club anywhere repeating that feat today, unlikely !
  • Replace Young with Powell in his prime.
  • Agreed. Top bloke. Top defender. His goal at wembley. Going to put the playoff final on later to cheer me up
  • the ruf, the ruf, the ruf is on fire.....

had his mum sit behind me at the play off final - lovely little west indian lady going mental.

Him and Kinsella are my two fav's...
  • Top Bloke I have his shirt from the Blackburn game the year we went up
  • I also remember one at the Valley where Gudjonsson was almost in a one on one and would surely have scored when Rufus caught up, hooked in his leg and took the ball off his toes. Gudjonsson didn't even bother to feign a penalty appeal, so good and well timed was the tackle.

  • ....and don't forget his goal at Wembley.
  • Ruuuuuuufuuuussss Ruuuuufuuuus i dont think i have ever shouted/screamed loader at a goal than that day at Wembley went totaly nuts.
  • First goal for the club as well after (I think) 165 games - at Wembley - unbelievable.
  • And Mendoncas hatrick
  • That day was as much Rufus's day as it was any of ours and i even include Kinsella in this comment i dont think anyone on that pitch wanted it as much or as badly as Richard he is Charlton he loves Charlton and he misses Charlton. He was dating a friend of mines cousin my pal staunch Yiddo used to speak so highly of him that he even took Charlton as his 2nd team which i had tried o do for years.

i loved Richard Rufus even though he cost me thousands when he cleard Iversens Header off the line on boxine day at WHL a group of us had 80quid on Spurs to win 3-2 with Euell getting the first goal oh yes and it was the 89th min when he did it at 2-2. i informed him of our cash loss at the poty do that year and although he stood us a beer he let us know you should never bet against your own team and walked off laughing
  • RR had no airs and graces and I can't get across what a pleasure he was to speak to. Had none of that player attitude that gets very depressing. Very very polite, which you rarely notice nowadays.

He even remember OohAaah when I mentioned him (he reminded me about the restraining order against OoohAaah from Chrissie Powell . . . . .)

It also threw me back to the days when I actually *liked* our players. . . .
  • Great player met him once, shame he has left the game. I would love to know, though, what the feck was he doing when Villa equalised in our 4-3 win!!

that runs out shortly but don't tell sir chris!!
  • He was in a flat cap and fake tash and beard on Saturday trying to hide from you.

Surely he knows you dont *do* away games?
