Luke Varney

edited March 2008 in General Charlton
I heard a rumour at the weekend that Luke is unhappy at the club and wants out. Apparently it's a done deal and that's why he wasn' t in the squad although reported as injured. I really don't want any sniff of this to be true but has anybody else heard this rumour?

Comments

  • He was looking happy and at the game at the weekend in the tunnel, didn't notice a limp though
  • There were rumours on here a month or so ago that he would be off in the summer. Not a good sign at all if true, as he's one of the few with both the talent and desire. Let's hope it's a load of tosh.
  • great one of only a few who shows some passion and we pi55 him off, good man management
  • He was sitting about 3 rows away from us in the west on Friday and seemed ok - didn't look like there was any struggle to get up the stairs to sit with a few of the reserves/youth team near the end of the game.
  • Wasnt Newcastle suppose to be interested in him.

Oh well if 3 million quid comes in a good job done by Pards getting the club an extra 500k in !!. Thats what it seems to be like these days.
  • There was a rumour in December that he was due to leave in January, but come back in and showed a bit of form so was retained.

    Rumours are exactly that though.
  • I read somewhere that it took him a while, as a young northern lad, to settle in London but was now feeling more comfortable and at home.

Rumours are nearly always unreliable and it would be pointless to hypothesise on how people are managed on the basis of one.

Not having a go at Solidgone or anyone else but how many players are "rumoured" to be about to be transfered/unhappy/on drugs/shagging the managers wife/gay/etc/etc every week.

Except most of it turns out to be true, Henry...

Anyway, do hope that's not the case for Lukey.

You don't even know it's true yet still use it as a chance to slag Pards, unbelievable.
  • If we get £3m+ for Varney I'd let him go.

Has yet to prove on a consistent basis why we paid £2.5m for him. That said he's still our best striker we have currently and should be on the teamsheet every week.
  • Its not up to Varney to prove he is worth £2.5m in my opinion.

Much like McLeod, the fee Pardew and the club pays for players is irrespective of the players themselves. Unfortunately some people think it is the player's fault that they cost so much and if they don't perform it is a stick to beat them with.

No disrepect BRE, but this is exactly the sort of example how we are collectively the most unrealistic set of supporters in the Championship.

Varney was signed for big money for this league, for whatever reason has not done it, yet some (and you're not alone), expect us to get even more money for him ??

Totally agree WSS, whether it's a player on £75k a week or a high tranfer fee, the ridiculous money in the game right has created a totally false environment.

Whatever the profession, it don't matter how much you pay someone they can only be so good.

If a team from the Prem say Boro had a punt on him, the amount of money floating around in the Prem I don't think it would be too unrealistic for us to get £3m for him.

Only last year people like Jones/Chopra/Koumas were going for alot more than that.

Who is slagging Pards, hope u r not jumping to conclusions, there is a coaching team within the club, not just one man,

  • Thanks for your comments gang but I was only trying to see whether the rumour was rife but I'm pleased to hear it's not. Look forward to seeing the little son of Reg back on the pitch this saturday.
  • Varns strikes me as a nice lad who just loves to play his football.

Maybe that's naive of me, but considering he was playing non-league 4 years ago, he's probably pinching himself that he's come this far.

If he plays, he stays - will be more or less his reckoning, I believe.
  • sign nicky maynard and play them up front together
