Saturday 16th March 1974. Spotland Att: 850
Rochdale 1 (0) (Grummett 88) Charlton Athletic 1 (0) (Powell 79).
Charlton: Dunn, Penfold (Reeves), Tumbridge, Hunt, Goldthorpe, Curtis, Powell, Flanagan, Horsfield, Warman, Peacock.
Referee: C N Seel (Carlisle)
Sent off: Dunn was sent off in the 71st minute for arguing with Referee Seel. Reeves took over in goal.
Gross reciepts for this match totaled £254.64. Charlton's share of the gate amounted to £58.04.
Protest: Approximately 70 Charlton fans ran onto the pitch calling for the resignation of chairman Michael Gliksten, who was not present at the match. Charlton subsequently withdrew recognition of The Vally Supporters Club - the reason given was a number of young supporters, under the influence of drink, made themselves a nuisance on the train that carried the team and directors to Rochdale.
A solicitors letter was sent to Charlton Athletic by the Valley Supporters Club demanding a retraction of the accusations. The club stood their ground by not printing a retraction or, in fact, replying to the letter.

After that, I spent the next few years on the Lewis's coach - very occasionally would we have more than one Lewis's coach to a game!
Valley Mac, I was on the Lewis's coach that day, too.
Don't get me started with memories of those days with Chris Slattery, Les Turner et al .......!
God, This makes me feel old. I was there too, also on a coach from Woolwich. Beresfords Square meeting point?
Charlie was about 80 years old back then, and still took coaches out - but not ours(!)
Eddie Cecil was our regular driver. Proper Cockney sparrer.
Remember our kickabout football matches in the lorry parks at the motorway services stops?
Did you have long hair, flares, Doc Martins and a silk scarf tied around your wrist?
Don't put me on the spot, Valley Mac ........ I've come a long way in life since those days! lol
The silk scarf tied round the wrist was de rigeur in those days.
Big Chris Slattery was our 'leader' - you'll probably remember him sitting at the front of the coach with his pretty missus,"I'm your 'Appy Courier" and "Who found the ground at Wrexham/Shrewsbury/Walsall/York/Oldham etc"
Happy Days! 70 of us at an away match. And people moan about taking 300. Ha ha!
Wasn't even that many, one foggy midweek night at Huddersfield. We lost of course, 2-0.
How dare they ;-)
Yes i was one of the 70 and as i remember it we all tried to get into the Rochdale dirctors seated area which is why the club freaked out.
At least 70 made it on the pitch!
