Given the current circumstances Andy and Paddy put in a good performance.
Two good professionals. Both remain positive for Saturday.
Spoke positively about the commitment Pardew puts in on the training ground.
Feel that the transition the squad has had to go through this year has not helped v Stoke or Bristol City. If not this year they are confident it can be sorted next year.
Was a good evening. 60+ people there despite what we are going thru.
Some strange mate of Inspectors Sands won the signed Palace teamsheet and then did the pulling his hand away trick on Andy Gray. He's not coming to the next meeting : - )
[cite]Posted By: Ledge[/cite]any chance of letting us in on some of the stuff from the night or is all p&c
If you are too lazy to come from Carshalton to Bromley then why should I bother to tell you. : - 0
Others will remember it better than me and don't shoot the messenger this is what I remember them saying nothing else.
They were both wearing the same white baseball boots (?) which they didn't get as a job lot (someone asked that)
Paddy is very chatty and easy with doing Q and As. Andy is quieter but both said that they didn't have much media training (Paddy had a little at Man City when 15) but that you get used to do these sorts of things. Both seemed fairly articulate. Andy looks a lot younger than 30. Both taller than you think, Paddy is almost as tall as me.
Said they like Pardew and that there is a very good backroom team. There are about 10 coaches, physios etc etc in the dressing room at games. Said Pardew has tried everything to turn things round changing preperation, travel etc and must be pulling his hair out.
Denied that loan players try less. Gray said he'd been on loan before at clubs and you are trying to impress you old or current club so you want to do well.
Both had asked around about Charlton before coming and got only positive feedback. AG asked Sasa Ilic and PM Stuart Balmer.
Set the they are well looked after when they come with help with houses, nurseries etc. Much better than Sunderland where you are left to fend for yourself.
They were both in an hotel with Samedo and taught him bits of English as he did know a word. Samedo is now so good he translates for Monterio. ZZ can also speak English OK.
Monterio is a "beast" and likes getting stuck in. PM says he looks the part with the hair band.
Can't remember anything else right now. AFKA/Peanutman/WWTone and the Inspector were there so they can chip in.
As the Average White Band sang I've got work to do.
[cite]Posted By: Curb_It[/cite]and what did they think of the booing?
someone did ask that. I think they said it didn't bother them and Gray said it was much much worse at Sunderland. They thought the fans have been good and were great at Ipswich.
Never a massive fan of the Q+As with current players, largely because they quite correctly have to tow the party line and you kind of know what the answer will be before its given, but they both come across as genuine nice guys, who care.
We are so fortunate at Charlton that the club gives the go ahead to these events and its such a travesty that 60-odd people is seen as a 'good turnout'. We are privledged that players are prepared to give up their evenings and turn out. You normally learn nothing new, but it gives you a much better insight into the individual, the squad, the set up etc. I'm convinced if more fans got to see and speak to the players away from the pitch at events such as last night, some of their negativity would be put in check because you do see a different side.
Paddy was clearly very happy to be back in the side, and as a result is now really happy in the area, and with the club. He had a certain air about him and its pretty clear that he has that captain’s role potentially about him. Got the impression he was one of the more vocal ones in the changing room. Paddy was frustrated that Bougherra got injured when he did because he felt they were just starting to form a decent partnership.
Andy Gray quite clearly is desperate for a goal to get him going. You all know what strikers are like, and it must be hell for him at the moment. Just for him to say he’ll turn up and take questions when he’s had the run he has takes a lot of character. Comfortable living down here, you can live a lot more anonomously in London than you can in other parts of the country. He said that all the Charlton fans he has bumped into away from the ground have been good as gold with him. Mentioned at Burnley that if you’ve had a bad game, you’d be getting the Sunday paper and there would be someone there waiting to have their say.
Though you have to have the party line in the back of your mind, both players seemed genuine in the fact that the manager appears very well respected by the players. He is honest with them and is always out on the training pitch until the last player has left. Paddy said he is the best manager he has had for getting his point across to the players. Both emphasised away from the pitch the club is still very much run as a premiership outfit.
Asked about Andy Reid, they said we missed his quality, but players are realistic, and knew he is a player who deserves to be playing in the premiership, so no one bugrudged him his move.
Mentioned a couple of players at other clubs that have impressed them this season, and Hoolihan at Blackpool and McKenna at Preston were two names that come up.
I actually asked that, could that lend to smaller teams approaching matches with 'more hunger', but they played down that aspect, stating that the vast majority of Championship clubs are run as premiership outfits.

This worries me.
Should it be?
My thoughts too, WSS. But wasn't it a condition of Pardew's when he joined? Does rather add to the worry that they are over-pampered and might not be as up for it as other teams - sub-consciously at least. Certainly takes away some of the incentive for going up if they already have a cushy life.
Otherwise nice to hear they both came across well.
I suggest you're thinking along the lines of players being pampered, whereas i am looking at it more along the lines of training facilities and equipment, medical equipment, prozone analysis, relocation assistance etc.
Some may still be holding a 'Premiership attitude', which is wrong, but that is a different argument.
AFKA, i don't see the two as mutually exclusive to be honest.
If you're surrounded by first class facilities and equipment, arrangements such as luxury travel to away games, holidays to marbella etc then i think you think that you deserve it when maybe you don't.
Just my opinion but i think the 'premiership attitude' could be very well born out of the surroundings (plus Mr. Pardew's delusions of grandeur!).
I'm not saying that all we should have is a magic sponge for medical equipment etc of course!
[cite]Posted By: AFKABartram[/cite]depends how you want to look at it.

I'm thinking more about things like:
- a big backroom staff - ten coaches/ physios in the dressing room mught be more of a confusion than a help at times?
- flying to northern away games
- staying in five star resort hotels in Blackpool when the rest of us are slumming it in dodgy B&Bs!

that was wrote incorrectly, he said six off the top of his head, then only named four, and 4-6 is probably what you get at all clubs in the top two leagues (manager, assistant, physio, kit man, goalie coach etc)

sure he said those plus sports scientist, bookie, the man who answers their mobiles for them, DJ for the sound box, fashion consultant, PR man, bodyguards etc but I was drinking Newcastle Brown so may have imagined but the first of those.

Why did they ask those two and how do they know them!?
If only.
Wanted to come but midweek evenings are my knowledge nights I am afraid. tried to juggle but was impossible
Thanks for the info old much appreciated.
They tried Eddie Youds first but he couldn't remember being at Charlton...

Hope the above isn’t breaking any confidences.

But I don't really mind them staying in a decent hotel overnight
i've been saying this for a long time ;-)

1) The club is run very professionally...eg a positive
2) The 'pampering' arrangements are very similar to those of other Championship clubs
Having met these guys I feel more encouraged that we should be giving them all the support we can.
And whilst I agree with AFKA about the 'party line' stuff I feel you do get a different angle on things when you hear it direct from the players.
