Peter Varney - Conspiracy Theory

OK Peter Varney is off for "personal reasons" whatever that means. Right then.....here it comes. After the non event which was the financial review, I wonder if the board and CEO had a different view of what was required or the final outcome or direction club was heading. Did Peter try to get significant investment and after failure or rejection by board feel that "he had taken club as far as he could" ? OK............What say you /

I'd say this is way way off the mark. See the other thread on PV's SLP article

    previous thread
  • Yeah maybe but he`s not going to retire and he admits its going to be a job unfinished. Seems a little odd to me thats all. I for one think he has been brilliant for Charlton. I hope my fears are as you say well off the mark.

I say it's bollox and quite insulting to Peter IMO. Read the SLP article for what the personal reasons are.

As for the "non-event" of the financial review I would have thought £14m was quite an "event" and a long way from a "failure"

I'll tell the directors who put the money in - the two chairmen coughed up £4m each - and Peter that it was a failure and a non-event. Sure it will make their day after seeing their team lose at Ipswich : - (

And yes, I'm in a bad mood after the result which is why this is such a curt reply.
  • Harsh but possibly fair. Of course the investment was significant and the board do what they always do come up trumps. But imho its not going to allow us to compete with the relegated teams next season or the clubs that have sought real investment many times more than 14 million. QPR, Sheff Wed. All it will do will pay for another year of where we are now. Valley expansion ? team rebuilding ? I think not. Thats all I was postulating. Insult to Peter Varney ? See my post above. What did you expect Peter to say regarding his departure ? He is still Mr. Charlton in my book and even if there are differences I would expect him to say somthing like he has. As for the topic...Have I trod on hallowed ground and don`t have a right to suggest other reasons for his departure or be allowed to read between the lines ? And yes my curt response is because I too am pissed off with the result.

    OK we're all a bit Curt : - )

I think when someone mentions that their dad died the day before he was due to retire (which I would guess would be at the back of anyone's mind when they reach their mid-fifties), that he has a new grandaughter and wants a break from a very strenuous job then we should all just accept that they are valid reasons.

We can all "read between the lines" as much as we like and come up with fanciful ideas but that doesn''t make them true. By giving notice and saying he'll hang around to help the new person settle in doesn't sound like a major falling out with the board or any other sinister reason to me.
  • ok so I heard last night from my old man who goes to the gym with a guy who is good friends with Tony Jimenez and plays bowls with him that the board and investors were going to sack Powell to bring in Zola and when Varney caught wind of this he resigned.

I do not believe this myself because why would you sack a manager who is doing so well but then again my old man said this guy doesnt come across as the type of person to sh*t stir.
  • If that were true f4e why is Powell still there? Surely they would have gone ahead with their plan with Varney out of the way.

    exactly

  • possibly the worst made up story of the summer

  • For the love of god.
  • Would need to hear a decent reason why we would consider getting rid of Powell before i believe any of that.
  • Anyone got a link to the PV article please?
  • Oh dear...
  • there could be a number of reasons why it didnt happen

as i said i dont really believe it myself but him leaving did seem to come out the blue
  • Anyone know where Tony plays bowls?
  • Anyone know where Tony plays bowls?

    I do, but I can't say.
  • Yes thats the bit I find most unbelieveable... he doesnt strike me a bowls man.
  • tenpin or lawn?
  • Oh I didnt even think of tenpin. So maybe believable.

  • crown green?
  • Anyone know where Tony plays bowls?

It varies as he's banned from every green in the greater london area so has to bunk over the fence at night when everyone's asleep.

Heard this from the bloke in Downham B&Q who sold him the step ladder Dennis Wise uses get over the hedge when they team up for their nocturnal lawn based frolicking.

  • Anyone know where Tony plays bowls?

No, but there's a signed photo of Stan Bowles in the holiday home I'm currently staying in. Uncanny or what? The mystery deepens.
  • I smell the Zabeel link again

  • Varneys left?

Reckon that should have its own thread.
    Anyone know why?

There are many reasons and just as many people who know what they are... ;-)
