Ah Bobby Curtis. The bright blonde dyed hair, the bandy legs! Wasn't a bad centre forward either for a few games. He'd be completely fu**ed in today's game, with no pass backs to the keeper allowed, lol Think he went to Mansfield after us, would love to know what he is up to now

When we sold Billy Bonds to the West Scammers, we did so because we had a 17 year old Bob Curtis in the youth team.
At right back he was a revelation playing with gusto and storming upfield on the overlap, before he discovered his Blackheath watering hole.
Remember about 1970, it was the middle of March, we were bottom of Division II and a lost cause.
Manager Theo Foley decided to play in Curtis in midfield - we beat Middlesborough 1-0 driven on by Curtis.
In midfield he stayed, we went on a great run and escaped relegation quite comfortably in the end.
I remember talking to him once in the forecourt at Eastville, just before our Bristol Rovers fixture - he said it was his birthday that day and he had a good feeling for the game. He gave me a complimentary ticket (as Theo & the players usually did in those days for the hardcore away supporters) before going off to get changed.
We went a goal up (Cyril Davies, I think) and played really well that day ......for about 75 minutes.
You can guess the rest LOL ......yep, got beat 2-1.
Really liked him as a right back. Scored a scorcer against Notts Forest, almost got called up by Scotland to play England in the Euro playoff, but our lot gave Craig Brown such a bad reception, I think he was put off. Got a few injuries, and then went somewhere else.

Shame. I thought he was a quality player.
Greg Shields got the 'frozen out' treatment by nasty Mr Curbishley and was left to rot in the reserves.
He never was allowed to play in the 1st team again,
Eventually, he went back to Scotland. Complete waste of a good, overlapping full back with a thunderous shot.
Paul Went's a publican somewhere. When I was a kid I got invited to his house in Ilford with my Dad. This was after his house hunting parents came to look at our house and saw his picture on my wall one Saturday afternoon, while I was at the Valley watching him play. I'll never forget that, it was a real thrill to be invited to a Charlton player's house. He and his wife made us so welcome.

Amen. Remember an absolute cracker against Birmingham - I was right behind it in the North and by christ did he put some manners on that shot. Classy little player him - another one to p*** Curbs off and never play for the club again.
If we're talking WATN, what about George Shipley? Didn't he end up going to the Pikeys?
Greg Shields is still playing - currently at Dunfermline Athletic, having been transferred there after going back to Scotland and playing first for Kilmarnock after he left Charlton.
George Shipley is back in his native northeast as a Community Personnel Manager with Newcastle United.
From memory he was set to sign for Huddersfield, but chose to stay in the SE as he and his wife wanted to adopt. By moving out of their local authority area they would have gone to the bottom of the queue in Yorkshire, so he signed for Gillingham instead and played for a couple of years for them before injury finished his career off.
A great battling midfielder - I remember one great game he had against Man City when we beat them 5-0 in our first season in Division One at Selhurst. At that time we were bottom and I think it was New Year's day, he, Colin Walsh and Jim Melrose scored at least four of the goals between them.
TCE ......remember when Paul Went would go up for a corner and the Covered End would chant "Wally, Wally, Wally WENT, Wally Went......."?
Paul Went was a youth prodigy at Leyton Orient and we signed him in 1967 for £25,000, a then record fee for a 17 year old. He was a great strapping lad, but surprisingly cultured and good on the ball for a big centre half - and formed a great partnership with Peter Reeves at centre back.
(Just thinking: that 1967-8 season, with Curtis, Went & Reeves, we had 3 teenagers in the back four, along with 30 year old Brian Kinsey at left back. Hong Kong international Sir Charlie Wright was between the sticks).
Paul Went's motto surely was 'they shall not pass' and he generally made sure, by fair means or foul, they didn't.
In those days, invariably we'd be losing and Wenty would be pressed into emergency centre forward for the last 20 minutes. He could score goals too and not just with headers from set pieces.
One home game against a high flying Swindon Town, we were 1-0 down with 20 minutes to go and our barrell chested
centre half was pushed up front. Within a couple of minutes, Wenty had let fly from outside of the box with a thunderous drive right into the top corner - the keeper never smelt it, let alone moved.
5 minutes later, Wenty did exactly the same again from the same spot. Down in the Coverered End we all went wild doing our 'Knees up Muvver Brown' up and down the terracing in long chains (as we did then after every goal), before
taking the roof of with "Wally, Wally, Wally WENT, Wally Went Went, Wally Went...."
Bobby 'Digger' Hunt got a late third - and we couldn't believe we'd won 3-1 after being second best for most of the match.
When we got relegated to Division III in 1972, Ray Treacy & Paul Went were sacrificed.
Trace went to Swindon for £80,000 plus 'King Arthur' Horsfield.
And Wenty went (lol) to Fulham for 80 grand too.
End of an era.
And the match that got us relegated?
Losing 5-0 away to BLACKPOOL.
But that's another story.

I remember that game well. Melrose scored from almost out on the touchline. What a pasting we dished out that day - could have had about ten. I never really rated Shipley - but looking back that's probably because I was a kid and he was never one of those players to 'grab the eye' - unlike Colin Walsh, who I absolutely idolised when i was growing up.
That magic left foot of Colin Walsh was on fire that day. Do remember Walshie playing a killer through ball to put Shipley through one-on-one - and he finished neatly.
Shipley was bought by Lennie for that 1985-86 promotion team, along with John Humphries & Mark Reid at full back, and John Pender from Burnley at centrehalf, and John Pearson at centre forward.
Have I missed anyone out?
Quality signings by Lennie, real bargain basement signings but quality.
[cite]Posted By: Oggy Red[/cite]TCE ......remember when Paul Went would go up for a corner and the Covered End would chant "Wally, Wally, Wally WENT, Wally Went......."?
sorry I dont remember the song, only would have been six/seven that season just remember a few of the players, Obviously Sir Charlie, Wenty, Reevesy, Curtis were my favourites at the time for different reasons.
[cite]Posted By: Oggy Red[/cite]Luciano Masiello ...... played a handful of 1st team matches for us as a youngster around 1970.
I remember seeing us beat Norwich City 3-0 - and after a bout of heading tennis between skipper Graham Moore & Gordon Riddick, Moore swept the ball out to the left wing where Masiello beat his man and clipped over the perfect cross for big Graham Moore on the run to volley first time into the roof of the net, from the edge of the box.
Absolute picture goal and if it had been captured on film, people would still be raving about it today.
And there's another one - Gordon Riddick, centre forward signed from Gillingham for about a fiver.
Where are they all today?
Masiello is in charge of the former players' association now. There was an article in the programme about him earlier in the season.
And more household names: Gordon Riddick ....... where's he? ;o)
But Graham Moore was quality. Strong, cultured midfield general, regular Wales international. played for Northampton,
Chelsea and Man Utd in the First Division. Charlton skipper.
Remember got his leg broken in a 1-0 defeat at Blackburn.
Don't think he ever played again.
Quality player and a leader. Would step in to our current team without a doubt, the missing link.
Where's Graham Moore now?
[cite]Posted By: Oggy Red[/cite]Thanks for that, Len.

He was Guvnor of a pub in North Yorkshire but I heard he'd not been well so that may not still be the case.
Anybody remember our tiny central midfielder in the 70s: little Richie Bowman? I thought he was destined for great things but never really kicked on. Wasn't he finally sold to Reading?
BexleyRed:- Played against Simon Webster for the last two years in the Football Aid do at The Valley, still a competative sod and top bloke to boot. Had Colin Walsh in our team, another great bloke. Eddie Youds was our manager a couple of seasons ago and all three give their time freely to all who was there.
Saw Richie on his debut for Charlton at the Valley....stood chatting to his Mum after the game outside the old West stand, and when he appeared she introduced me to him....seemed like a really nice bloke and his Mum was lovely and so proud of him.
Bobby Goldthorpe. was there in The Covered End when he scored against Preston and we won 3 one , to get promoted. He is now a cleaning suppervisor, at a building where i was FM for a short while. Very nice guy. We did speak about that match a few times.

altogether now "one goal went past perry"
Had a degree and was a teacher before he played for us. I wonder how many other players at Charlton had good qualifcations?
Charlton legend ........ but only because of his name.
As a striker, he might have scored once though, so credit where it is due. )
He's still playing - in the German semi-pro league system.
Played against Simon Webster for the last two years in the Football Aid do at The Valley, still a competative sod and top bloke to boot. Had Colin Walsh in our team, another great bloke. Eddie Youds was our manager a couple of seasons ago and all three give their time freely to all who was there.
