Alan Pardew believes Charlton's results against the Championship's lower-ranked sides could make or break their season.
A win at struggling Sheffield Wednesday tonight could put them within two points of leaders Watford.
But Pardew, who has been linked with a loan move for Chelsea winger Scott Sinclair, claims competition in the second tier this season is tougher than it has ever been.
The Charlton manager, who took West Ham up to the Premier League via the play-offs in 2005, said: "The teams in the bottom half of the division are a lot stronger than they were when I was the Hammers manager three years ago.
"Back then, there were teams you knew you'd have a very good chance of beating, but this year, every game is really tight, which is why the division is so even. We should have done better in certain aspects of our game this season.
"What we desperately need is to go on a run in these final few chapters of the campaign."
