Darren Ambrose

Personally over the past few games including Palace I have been bitterly disapointed with Ambrose on the left. I think as soon as Jerome Thomas is ready again he must replace him. He is a poor tackler, not much pace and alot of the time makes poor decisions, the only thing I have noticed is that him and Varney bode quite well together but really he has not been good enough and needs replacing

  • The biggest problem I have with him is that he hides, constantly. He just doesn't seem to have the mental strength required to make him as good a player as his technical ability offers.
  • I wouldn't wait for Thomas, I'd throw Basey in there and see what happens...

He does hide in games but against Stoke and even more against Palarse I thought he worked really hard, just couldn't get the final pass or shot right.

I think we have to accept that he will be closely marked by the opposition because they know what he's capable of which makes it easier for the players around him. I'm not Ambrose's greatest fan but I do think he's really putting in the effort. Sometimes his demeanour suggests that he's disinterested. I've said this before but if he could only be trained to wear his heart on his sleeve a bit more and really look like he's bigged up, it will help him both confidence wise and with those who jump on his attitude from the sidelines.
  • I really think when lee cook or even thomas are available ,he will be the one to make way.He never looks at home playing wide and barring suspensions and injuries,he s unlikely to get a game in the middle.
  • i can't for the life of me see what you people see. Thought he was excellent against Palace - made a couple of dodgy passes but so do most players. all this heart on sleeve nonsense - he is not Scott parker - we have paddy mccarthy to give us that - ambrose gives us quality in other areas - he's always a goal threat for starters
  • I didnt think he was awful against the Nigels, but he wasnt very effective either.....I think he has improved, but is a tad inconsistent..he has a part to play in the run in, but competiton is just what we need right now.....I didnt think we needed a right back, but just look what Halford bought to the team....things are looking good squad wise...we just need to get Gray and McLeod scoring and we will be awesome.

I think his lack of passion is why he is sometimes unfairly criticised. Thats the point I am making. I'm not expecting him to do a Gazza, but I do think that encouraging the passion in him to come out will help keep supporters off his back and importantly help his play as much as anything else.
  • Don't think he played badly against Nigels and in general has been playing quite well of late, can be a tad frustrating but has been combining well with Youga. If you put Thomas in front of Youga I think it might be a little too adventurous a combination. I think we should be happy with the way he is playing.

Basey has got a good left peg but he has nowhere near the pace needed to play on the wing.
  • Pards is playing Ambrose for a reason - and that is because he works well within the team, reads the game well, with good movement, positional play and creativity.

Because he is not the physically gung-ho action man and and doesn't display open aggression (although he was sent off at Sunderland on his Charlton debut), people seem to dismiss his contribution.

But he's got a good first touch & great technique - and is one of the most creative players in the team.

Ambrose is invariably involved at some point with many of our goalscoring opportunities.
You've only got to see TV highlights of our games to see this.

No denying he could improve his corner kick delivery, though!!

But Pards sees his value to the team - and that's why he picks him week in and week out.

I think you are right Oggy - In Pards we trust.
  • There have been several threads on Dazza over the last few months and I think he is our most controversial player in the sense you either get him or you dont.

Until Christmas I didnt get him. Now I do. Thomas does all his fancy stuff often with no end result sometimes beating the same player twice. Sam can huff and puff but often the final delivery is disappointing.

Ambrose can open up a defence from nothing with either a quick piece of skill or good movement . He isnt really in your face or flashy but deceptive. He cant tackle but when he lost possession the other day he tried his damndest to get in a tackle even if it was a clumsy attempt. When he lost possession on Friday night that was partly down to other players not giving him an outlet.

My biggest gripe with Ambrose is over those corners. Anyone at Scunny will know that it was awful then and against Palarse I think only the first corner was decent. So for a technical player with good skills he can be utter frustration. But I would have him inked in well ahead of Thomas. The Scott Sinclair rumour would be an interesting addition as I believe Cooks injury record is similar to Reid.
  • Oggy and Peanut are spot on.
Especially now Reid has gone, Ambose is one of our principal creative outlets.

Thomas is flash but rarely delivers. Sam continues to disappoint since his sending off - he has the talent in his feet but does he have it in his head?
  • oggy, i applaud you. i've stuck by ambrose since he's been here. he does frustrate me, but on his day he's excellent. he just needs to play behind the front two a la ipswich and in pre season. unfortunately that isn't going to happen any time soon.
  • I'm sorry ross but you say he is good on his day but quite honestly his day comes very rarely and not enough if we are aiming to be a Premiership club next year.

It comes more regular than Thomas' or Sam's whom he is vying for a position. The stats don't lie i'm afraid and Ambrose's contribution this season has been invaluable.
  • "very rarely"???

Who scored our last away goal and who set up all four goals in our biggest win of the season a few weeks ago?

An excellent analysis which sums him up to a "T."
