Manchester City 2 (1) (Dickov (pen) 7, Symons 88) Charlton Athletic 2 (0) (S Jones 74 90).

Man City: Wright, Brightwell, Shelia, Brown, Symons, Edghill, Whitley, Russell (Van Blerk 65), Dickov (Crooks 75), Kinkladze, Rosler (Bradbury 75).

Charlton: Salmon (S Jones 46), Brown, Bowen, K Jones, Rufus, Chapple, Newton, (Barness 42), Kinsella, Holmes, Allen, Bright. Unused sub: Balmer

Referee: Phil Richards (Preston)

Sent Off: City's Georgian full-back Shelia ordered off in the 70th minute for a 2nd yellow card.

Salmon injured knee ligaments while making a save and was replaced in goal by Steve Brown at half-time. Newtons departure was due to ankle ligament damage and Symons broke his nose in the first half following and accidental elbow from Chapple.

Penalty awarded against Rufus for bringing down Rosler.

  • Never forget Steve Jones' equaliser (and his corking opener) and winding up the City supporter who'd just given me the 'cut your throat' signal a minute earlier when they'd taken the lead. I also was glad to jump straight on the coach too. Not that it stopped us giving it the large to the disgruntled home fans....classic!!!
