HELP!!!! Low Emission Zone

edited January 2008 in Not Sports Related
I don't want to open the usual hornets nest on motorists v cyclists etc but apparently this starts on 4 February and affects areas like Sidcup and Bexley which I pass on my way to work.

Is it a congestion charge by stealth because I've seen or heard nothing about it at all other than signs on the A2 and A20 saying you are now in the Low emission area.

I'm just a decent, honest, working man, whose wages are only ever increased with extreme reluctance by his employer, trying to support my family. Am I about to incur another stealth tax? I've not budgeted for this because I've heard nothing.

I'm worried I'm going to be screwed £8 plus a day or whatever the congestion charge is and on my wages and present personal circumstances I simply cannot afford it.

Can anyone please help and explain what this is all about?

  • I think it only applies to commercial vehicles over a certain size.
  • Stuff like this is party only to civil servants and other public sector workers Len
  • So long as you're not driving anything bigger than a small van, you should be fine.
It's a phased-in thing starting with large vehicles.

Basically, the new vehicles should be compliant and won't have to pay - it's aimed at older vehicles with high emissions.

I'll find the link in a sec...

    TfL Low Emission Zone

    Vehicles affected:
The Low Emission Zone (LEZ) will affect older, diesel-engined lorries, buses, coaches, minibuses and large vans (exceeding 1.205 tonnes unladen weight).

It will also affect other specialist vehicles that are derived from lorries and vans, including motorised horse boxes, breakdown and recovery vehicles, refuse collection vehicles, gritters, sweepers, concrete mixers, tippers, removals lorries, fire appliances, motor caravans, ambulances and large hearses (over 2.5 tonnes).

There will be a phased introduction of the LEZ from 4 February 2008 through to January 2012. Different vehicles will be affected over time and increasingly tougher emissions standards will apply.
  • I think I'm ok for the moment at least.

That's a big relief I was panicking there. Thanks S!
  • Dunno why but this "london low emission zone" even spreads to quiet little roads in joydens wood, i've seen loads of the signs on my way to college.

Read in the london lite the other day, this scheme does not affect normal cars, just buses or lorries, so the bus companies will have to have more checks on their buses to make sure they are not producing too much co2, if they are found to be emiting too much co2 they will be hit with big fines.
  • it covers the area encompassed by the M25, therefore any routes that go in or out of that zone will have the signs/cameras.
  • You won't be affected, and it's a good idea to help lower pollution in London
  • above should read "does not effect cars YET !"
  • How about all the Eco facists go work somewhere else ? say mmm Bodmin Moor and cycle there , live in a comune , eat cold lentals by vegan friendly candle light, make clothes out of grass and leave us pollution nazi`s in peace ?

just turned no two 100W none energy saving lamps in protest !! and await a knock on door from Eco warrior in raindow aliance uniform !

Livingstone wouldn't do that - it would guarantee he didn't win the election.

You can tell he's a bit worried by the fact he's extended the OAP's free bus/train/tube passes into the morning peak. OAPs are much more likely to vote than any other age group.
  • Some one shoot that Rat.

  • Am currently laughing at Greenwich Council's 'going green initiative' re: our rubbish collection...there is now a weekly collection of dry recyclables (good and easy enough), a weekly collection of 'food waste' (also good and easy enough) and a bi-weekly collection of the rest of the rubbish, which includes nappies etc which has resulted in black bags everywhere and loads of nappies left out in the street (not so good)...

But the best thing about it is that to ensure we are all now greener we have an extra refuse collection van plodding up and down our street spewing out sh*t every week...
  • I dont know why that arse livingston dont ban all vehicles out of london alltogether - at least he would gain my respect - but we all know its just a money making exercise.

Or how about the government setting a new car company that researches petrol alternatives instead of giving china and india 100 million !!!!

Nappies are collected weekly if you tell the council - there are special arrangements for them.
  • yes thats right f-blocker you get a special nappy sack dont you?
me and my pals had fun baiting the council asking what you do with certain items - i wont go into since it is lunchtime.

one question - where do egg shells go - into the caddy or the black sack???
  • The GLC under Livingston gave free travel on the buses to all. The money want on the poll tax. It caused such a ruck he took it off. Now he is doing it by stealth.

Welcome to the Socialist Republic of London run by Comrade Ken.

his advisors are members of Socialist Action (formery Red Action) once paid by Moscow and now paid by the Tax payer. Formery members of the IRA /Troups Out etc etc etc, and no i didnt write this weeks Dispatches program(on the newt lovingwanker) but i could have.

I could take that comment in two different ways!

I've had a moan at them about where I store my black sacks for 2 weeks between collections too - not surprisingly I haven't had a response.
  • Turned up at 8.30 PM on Tuesday for the "wet bin". thats going to stink like f**k in the summer aint it.

  • This is so tiresome.

Yes Livingstone raises taxes, gives away travel on public transport for all and is only doing it to get re-elected. But he's about as socialist these days as Tony ****ing Blair.

Yes the council rubbish collections are crap, becoming increasingly unreliable and moving inevitably towards a collection every fortnight. But this is largely because the Tories cut all their ****ing funding so badly in the nineties that they haven't ever recovered from it.

Every week we get an argument about cycling/buses/train fares/insert-cause-du-semaine here. There is precisely **** all anyone can do about it.
  • Leroy sorry fella your wrong. Its all about control of the cash and power.I could go on about that TwatFor yonks but Red Ken is Red Ken.

Greenwich do a good job ob the rrecycling thing on the whole this latest is a bit hit and miss though.

As a resident of one of those quiet little roads this ghas got to be a joke. I now obviously am not allowed to move as the removal company won't fancy incurring a charge, have the roads swept, call the fire brigade or an ambulance or even fecking die in my own home, coz if I do the missus will just have to leave my rotting carcass out with the bins which won't be collected.

As for gritters if anyone can remember seing a grit lorry around Joydens Wood at any time since the last ice age, they should stick to the normal tobacco

LOL - no worries, my post was pretty sarky anyway :)

You mean round the back where Chipley Street was - towards Greenwich? Remember a knackers yard round there that we used to hang around in when i was a kid - rumours of the takings of a Post Office robbery in the sixties being hidden inside the boot of one of the motors there kept us breaking into old wrecks for many a summer afternoon!
  • So my lovely diesel guzzling Carrot Crunchers Taxi 4x4 wont be affected?
  • Yes mate always nice round there ! Used to be a pub called The Mad house ! round the back OB thought it would be a good idea if it was their late night watering hole, till they came out in the early hours and found their motors on their roofs ! I remember it making me laugh as a iwalked to work.
  • I think there is a proposal to extend 'free' cars into the congestion charge area if you are very low polluting, Mini and smaller. And at the same time charge 4x4's £25/ day as opposed to £8, not sure if this is going through.
