Just 17

No, this isn't a link to a porn site! Reading Ambrose's comments re. the rest of the season, realising we've now got 17 games (or 20!) to get it right suddenly made me nervous / excited / confused. Can we do it?

As observed elsewhere, defence isn't quite as crap as we sometimes lead ourselves to believe - perhaps we just got too used to watching a higher standard.

Can Gray & Varney, plus Dicko and Chris score enough goals?

Will Reid be back at all, and if so, in what system?

Perhaps most important of all, with all the top teams still to come to The Valley, can we (fans included) make it something more of a fortress than the one that's been sacked by Burnley, QPR, and Colchester? Those fixtues form a high % of what's left in SE7, and if we can gain a lot of points from those, current away form should see us go v close.

I still find it surprising that after so many slip-ups we're well in touch with 2nd. Can we do it, and how? Oh, and can we please put an end to Warnock's Dowie-like little run?

  • There's actually another 18 league games to go. During our last 9 games (including the 2 WBA cup games) we have managed 1 win, 6 draws & 2 defeats. I think that it is going to take a pretty spectacular turn round in form to get us enough points to qualify for the play-offs. Southampton sneaked into 6th place last year with 75 points. Our main failing recently is that we have created a lot of chances but failed to score enough goals. I'm just not sure that the purchase of Andy Gray will be enough to correct this failing. Hope I'm wrong but....

    Oh Pete come on!

Why does it need to take a turnaround in form? We are in 6th place at the moment - maybe if we were 13th/14th i'd agree with you but we're still in there.
  • WSS, we have only won 1 of our last 9 games!! That's the form that needs to be turned round spectacularly.
  • Know what you're saying Pete but I think we've already seen a pretty spectacular turnaround in form. We've played well against West Brom twice, Watford away and Blackpool - a huge improvement on Colchester or any of the games immediately preceding that.

Appreciate we've drawn three of those four but they were all against the top teams in the division and in my opinion we were the better team in all three games (though I'm relying on others and highlights for West Brom away but I think general concensus was that we were the better team). We've now signed a guy whose stats show him scoring about one in two in this division which I think is a pretty decent return and may just turn those draws into victories. Only time will tell but I think we're set for a better final third to the season than what we've already seen. Bring it on! If ever there was a time for positive mental attitude I think it's now.

Let's do as mentioned above and elsewhere, raise our game as fans and try and make the Valley a fortress for the run-in.

In the last 6 games Watford have only one point more than us. Do you think they'll not get into the playoffs?
  • We can do it, "all we need" is a decent run!

And the mighty infallable promotion certainties West Brom have only managed 3 points more than us.
And with just a little more going our way, we would have beaten them in either of the cup matches.

And we made 2nd placed Watford look 2nd best in their own backyard.

And we've already beaten Bristol City in their own backyard.

And we've Stoke City at home next........

We're in a good position and it's all to play for.
If you think you can ..... then you can. Look at Palace.
  • so west brom and watford have got better recent form than us and better previous form so i'd fancy both of them to finish above us...
we've got to start turning our performances into results , i'd rather we played crap and won now cos these draws will not see us make the play offs
we have to get a winning run going asap cos all this 'we've got one of the best squads' will mean nothing if we don't start winning quickly
  • Let's just hope dowie doesn't ruin any chance we have on the last day in revenge for both us putting the palarse down and binning him after 12 games
