  • let me guess 'better than what we would of took up there' :-)

    60 scouts there tonight apparently........
  • [cite]Posted By: WSS[/cite]what was Sheff Utd's away support like oohahh?
rubbish about 60 odd parents and close friends and a few who live in london , about twice as many as we'd bring up there;-)
  • [cite]Posted By: AFKA Bartram[/cite]let me guess 'better than what we would of took up there' :-)

lol you read me like a book
  • jonjo shelvey absolute class,a joy to watch and both full backs very good,it's funny how different people view things,i thought Ben Godfrey looked a bit lost first half but was excellent second half.I sat behind Sheff Utd dugout in the first half,Scott Sellars was giving Shelvey stick when he was brought down in first half calling him a diver when he was taken out late from behind, but when Shelvey scored just looked at sellars and give it him.At 4-0 I told sellars to start the coach up,he didn't look too pleased.
  • that challenge on shelvey in the first half was straight out of the dirty leeds book that mug sellars(ex-leeds player) probably teaches them from
  • Very enjoyable night. It was almost embarressing how much we were on top given that Sheff Utd have a similar record in their league to ours. Passing and movement was excellent and the tackling was spot on. Out keeper was never really tested.

Our strongest team other than Wright and Arter according to some bloke called Gritt who was sitting behind me. He also said lots of other good kids coming thru in the years below. buy those Valley Gold cards ladies and gents.

Yussef was my MOTM - reminded me of Paul Mortimer with his running and passing.

Godfrey is big and gangly and took his goals well and won the pen.

Shelvey had a huge fan club there. If he is that big and that good at 15 (not 16 till Feb as above then who knows what he will be like at 18.

Wagstaff not as involved but did some good things before going off with cramp.

I really like Alex Stavrinou - holding midfielder, calm, ran the show.

Two good full backs as well. Solly runs like Boywer and Long was good.

Sheff Utd - terrible keeper and not much else. No.4 Dempsey was a solid CH.

1300 and big queues outside. Weightwatchers in Bartrams had a shock!!

60 scouts from Ebbsfleet to Spurs and plenty in-between.
  • Henry, presumably much of the interest is in Shelvey. Is the feeling from in the club that they need to get him up towards the first team squad pdq, before the vultures try and pick him off?
  • Yeah, Bing ........before West Scam come in with their Defoe type bribes.

Shelvey lives in Essex and has always been a Scammers fan.
Mr Curbishley will claim that, in anycase, he discovered him as a 9 year old. ;o)
  • echo all that was said above, excellant all round performance. First half I thought that in centre fwd Godfrey we had another Varney, albeit Alex not Luke. Second half though he scored two good goals one left one right footed. Shelvey was probably the pick. Also impressed with the centre halves who defended well when they had to but were both comfortable bringing the ball forward. One of them, Mambo, is only 15 but is 6'4". And he played number 5, get it?, Mambo No.5. I can feel a song coming on.

Don't know the detail but scouts were there from a whole range of clubs eg Millwall. Doesn't mean that they are looking to "nick" players off us now. Perhaps looking for loans or to see who to pick up if we let them go. I guess scouts go to 100s of games per season and this was a good one to see.

Reports on CL from others are that Shelvey is happy at Charlton and that all is OK in terms of him signing up but not heard that confirmed by the club.

When he is 16 we can sign him up on a contract. Not sure why we would want to force him into the first team until he is ready. He's good but for the little it is worth I didn't think he was ready yet. Others who know a lot more may have a different view.

Post-Defoe it is much harder for clubs to just poach players. Something that is forgotten is that WHU offered us nothing and only because we fought it did a proper system of compensation come in. Shame it always seems to be Charlton having to do the work but that's who were are I guess.

please let's not have a rash of posts beating up the club for not signing him up yet saying "why aren't we making sure we keep him, the board must act NOW, we always loose out, we lost Defoe 10 years ago so that proves we loose all our good players" : - (

  • Good points, Henry.

As West Side posted earlier on this thread, Shelvey hits 16 on 22 Feb - 5 weeks time.

I should imagine Charlton already have an appropiate contract in mind to offer him.

After all, I can't imagine the club would be thinking of letting go one of their brightest prospects and current England goalscoring schoolboy international.
  • [cite]Posted By: Henry Irving[/cite]please let's not have a rash of posts beating up the club for not signing him up yet saying "why aren't we making sure we keep him, the board must act NOW, we always loose out, we lost Defoe 10 years ago so that proves we loose all our good players" : - (

Thanks for that Henry, you certainly wont be getting any of those posts from me. I am sure that the club will do what they can to secure his services if they think he's worth keeping.

I wasn't trying to suggest he gets into first team squads unless he's ready. It's just that people seem to be saying that he's big for his age and that got me wondering whether we have a Rooney type situation where the bloke is physically bigger/stronger than his age would suggest.
  • he's tall for his age,not muscley like Ronney, but I got to say he is so comfortable with both feet, and number 2 was great supported shelvey all night but not once looking to ping a 40 yard pass down the line, always played it to someone's feet.Gotta say I thoroughly enjoyed it last night.Chris Dickson walked along one of the rows trying to get to other first teamers who were sitting by the dug out.(we weren't allowed anywhere near them not surprising)But he got some nice comments and some youngsters gave it the D.I.C.K.O. which he enjoyed, and made Powelly think he was no longer the cult hero.My only criticsims was they didn't open the last block at each end making it quite packed but maybe they didn't expect that turnout, even though i thought there were more people there.
  • As said, he is still 15, tall for his age but needs to and will broaden out over time. Nowhere near the finished article yet and there is never any guarantee a top player at 15 will even make it in the lower leagues, so lets not get too excited yet. Seems to have a good touch and brain already, will add strength and a bit more pace in time.

He seemed to enjoying doing the Dicko celebration as well !!
  • Thanks Henry, but please learn the difference between lose and loose !
  • what i will add is its great to hear there were some first team players there last night.

When i told Parkinson the result of the previous round at the Bromley meeting, his reaction was 'that's great news, it really adds a buzz to the whole training ground when the young lads come back with a good result'.

We're a close knit club, and a positive vibe at the training ground is essential. Its great that some of the players don't just see the club as a place they earn their money.
  • [cite]Posted By: Salad[/cite]Thanks Henry, but please learn the difference betweenloseandloose!

I do but it is an on-going protest against the banning of the spell checker by Lookie ; - )
  • That's great to hear.
I get the impression that Reidy, Ambrose, Holland & Powell would have that sort of attitude.

Very good point. Seemed to be a lot of other boys from presumably youger youth sides going by their jackets. Pards was there also.
  • What delighted me most was the way in which the boys so outplayed Sheff. Utd. Sometimes a lad stands out in youth team football simply because he's taller / stronger than his contemporaries, but these guys played superb football. Their appreciation and vision of the game staggers me; just shows what good coaching can do. That said, they still have to listen and be willing to take all they're told on board. Some of the passing and movement was tremendous to watch, as well as the natural athleticism we might expect.

We've often brought through good balanced little players who haven't quite had that extra something to step up, but several of this crop look as though they might really be able to push on. Guess it depends what level the first team are operating at by the time they come of age; top half Prem over a period made it that much harder to crack the first team. Nice of us to balance things up towards the end by throwing on two lads from the U-11s!

  • Also, from looking in the handbook, a lot of local boys from Sidcup, Chatham, Maidstone, Crawley and even Crown Woods! as well as boys born in Columbia, Nigeria but who are now based in London.

In the final count it will only matter, quite rightly, if they can play or not but local boys shining in the youth teams just makes it easier for the club to recruit the next generation of kids.

Spot on. Wasn't a victory for the biggest set of lumps. We played some great stuff.
  • Also very encouraging that we so out-classed them without arguably our 2 best players at that level in Wright and Arter.
  • its very very hard to compare at that level though to be honest unless you have a very good knowledge. Its impossible to know if everyone is at the same age group, whether players have been held back for a reserve game etc.
  • We must sign Jon Jo up on the longest contract known to man, IMO he was fantastic He passed excellently was full of energy and scored to crackers, he has an heir about him not so much arrogant but a knowledge of how good he is quailty can not afford to let this one slip through.

Wagstaff was electric in spells and also looks promising, The big Centre Half whos shorts looked like a basket ballers needs snapping up also.

The 2 front boys Rassid and Ucheli were a handfull all night and the guy who played at number nine was missing n the first half and blinding in the second bagging two goals.

Add Wright and Arter to this and who says you dont win anything with kids cos we certainly could
  • jonjo is signed up (well as much as you're able to a 15 year old) he loves it at charlton
he comes from harold hill (near romford)
