Things you never knew about..............Watford

1. Elton John was once an active element of Watford's 70s firm, and penned the song 'Saturday's Alright For Fighting' following a successful ambush that led to the major shoeing of a group of Luton fans in 1973.

2. Formed in 1881 as Hertford FC, the name was changed in 1897 following a long running joke between board members. Hertford were renouned for their hospitality to vising clubs, a feat rarely reciprocated on their travels. On return from away games, the chairman would ask 'how was the food' to which the fellow directors would chuckle, and cohesively shout ' WHAT FOOD ?'.

'What Food' become their running joke, and following the resignation of the original chairman in 1897, the remaining directors changed the name to Watford FC to stamp their mark on the club.

3. Graham Taylor's famous 'Do I Not Like That' originated from Dec 1981, when the manager was offended by an x-rated present he had drawn from the chairman's Secret Santa competition.

4. Luther Blisset is believed to head of the UK branch of the Scientology Church, having introduced the religion to the UK following an extended holiday in Los Angeles in 1984. Luther delivered a reading at the 2006 wedding of his good friend Tom Cruise to Katie Holmes.

5. Watford's traditional colours are red and blue, but they changed to their yellow colours in response to the death of manager Bill Findlay's popular canary bird 'Coco' in 1946.

    7. they are known as the Hornet's not because of the obvious Yellow colour of their strip, but because of an Eccentric Manager they had in the 30's. Ivor Welman was a great believer in the envigorating properties of ground walrus tusk. He insisted that players tucked into ground walrus tusk sandwiches before a match. The undeducated masses called them horn eaters and eventually the name was contracted to the hornets that we know them as today.

    8. The Watford nickname has always been "The Hornets" but not always in its current form. Prior to when the name was changed, the Watford squad would routinely frequent "Destiny", the nightclub in central Watford. Here the players would often use their flared trousers to attract the ladies back to their pads for some nocturnal activities. The flared trousers were named by regular members of the public as "Whore Nets" and as such the nickname was born.

Considering to be offensive, Elton John got rid of the name as he preffered to see a little pricks hence the change to "Hornets" who do have pricks.

    10. In 1894 the off-side rule had to be changed so that players were only off-side in your own half following Watfords tactic of pushing all but one of their players in to the other teams penalty area so making an almost impossible to break off-side trap

    Hence Vicarage Rd.

Should they ever win a game played on a Sunday the freehold of the Eastern side of the ground would revert to the Retired Vicars Friendly Society, a charity that is the 4th largest landowner in England.

Watford is home to the infamous Hertfordshire Dribbler. The unknown freak spent much of the seventies breaking into houses in Watford and leaving pint mugs full of what can only be described as 'greenies'. It is believed that the dribbler was an inmate at a local asylum closed in 1973, shortly before the dribbling incidents began. The contents of the mugs were disposed of by the local fire-brigade who were rumoured to get new recruits to drink them as part of some bizarre initiation ceremony.
