Was anyone else listening to his usual poor attempt at commentating during the pens? what a dick....... And how many bloody times did he say situation!!!!!!!!
[cite]Posted By: AFKA Bartram[/cite]I've thought that in the past Ledge, but last night he was consistently saying throughout we were the better team, didn't deserve to be losing etc.
Was too young to see him play at The Valley. Good player then, or developed as his career progressed ?
In my opinion he was easily one of the best players, I have ever seen in a Charlton shirt.
Quick, lightning turn with the ball at his feet, (in the same way that Dalglish used to), geat ability to out jump even the tallest defenders and most importantly he knew how to score.
But like others that have left the club with potentially a huge career in front of them, he never quite achieved what his ability dictated it should. Yes he got to play for some top teams, but he should have become to England, what Dalglish became to Scotland.
Your right though he does seem to have a downer on the club. I wonder why?
I actually played in the same team as Paul Walsh when he was in the youth set up at Charlton. Gaelic Football though, not quite the same, but you could tell he had the ability even then and even though it was obviously a completely different game.
i remember paul walsh being a very tricky player and destined for better things than he could achieve with us at the time , i can always picture him in our trendy adidas kit with 'FADS' on the front

Totally agree. I saw his debut game and from the off, he looked a different class. His ability to find space in the box singled him out for me. He was the best youngster we produced for many a year. I felt he would go all the way and he just about did but probably as you say KB, he didn't quite fulfil his true potential.
I used to go to Whit Hart Lane alot on corporate junkets and I saw him play for Liverpool. He was absolutely brilliant in the first half and Spurs just couldn't handle him. He was taken off and the game completely turned around in Spurs favour.
Their was something of Dalglish about him, perhaps not quite so physically strong.
Paul Walsh was a genius. I remember him being one of the first players ever to make me go 'wow' when I was a kid. It broke my heart when we sold him and Elliott to Luton for feck all - if anything Elliott was an even better player than Walsh. I do agree though that he is a shoite commentator and doesn't seem to have any sort of allegiance to us. Still not as much of an ar5ehole as Mullery though.
those moaning about paul walsh should think about the alternative last night.
on bbc london we had to put up with clive walker and another bloke???? spouting on about, ambrose being born on 29th of feb and how he is only 5 (prob wishful thinking on walkers part), various dr who actors and 'kevin' greening having premiership quality. there are other examples but i'm winding myself up thinking about them.
Paul Walsh was still only 16 when he made his debut for us.
Can't remember if he scored that day but next game we played Brentford at home in the League Cup and the young Walshie scored a hat trick. He never looked back after that.
He was about 19 when he was sold to Luton to pay the wages.
We got their centre forward Steve White in part exchange - who was a decent enough finisher if you gave him a service. But Walshie had that good first touch, intelligent reading & movement, guile and knack of being in the right place at the right time.
Greedy little git, though ....... like most good strikers.
We all agree Paul Walsh is magic wasn't it. Was quite original then. He was indeed a wonderful talent when he broke into the first team, I remember him scoring a hat-trick at home in the League Cup against Brentford and going home and thinking we have unearthed a star.
Him and Elliott (who I actually preferred, and I reckon is still 'more Charlton' than Walsh) were sold for a pittance.
Walsh seems to do a lot of the commentaries on games that get shown here - he ain't particularly good but has made a decent career out of it.
i was there for the brentford game it was a tuesday night and we won 5-0 i thought hales scored the hat trick and walsh got 2? i think he is twat he never mentions us in a good way.
we went up from Div 3 to second, with Barnsley and Rotherham, happy days, Mike Bailey.... great kit as well, best ever in my opinion the adidas one, even the away kit was cool. would sell bundles in this day and age
I never really got Paul Elliot I am afraid. I know he was seen as a star in the making when he played for us but I couldn't really see what everybody was raving about. He seemed to me anyway as nothing like the finished article when we sold him. I am happy to accept that I was wrong. The selling of Walsh and Elliott to Luton was another hammer blow and re-opened the "selling club" discontent which had dogged us for years.

Furry muff. I think he was one of those players that tended to polarise opinions. I've had discussions with other fans who, like me, were young when he was in the side and there's been unanimous agreement that he was a cracking player, and should have gone on to be an England regular - but opinion is definitely more mixed amongst people who were older at the time. maybe its just because EVERY Charlton player was great when you were a nipper - even Les Berry

Clearly after Luton he went on to play in Italy and for Chelsea before his career was cruelly cut short by injury. David Pleat could always spot talent thus I suspect my scouting capabilities are sub-standard. I just seem to remember a tall athletic lad who was good in the air but inexperienced and thus a little error prone.
The problem for the amateur talent spotter like myself is that I can pick out a decent striker like Walsh cos he beats players and scores. I can spot a decent midfielder like Bowyer because of his box to box energy and his ball distribution as well as goals, I can even spot a talented full back like Basey or Youga because of their ability to tackle and run up and down the line supporting the attack. Its more difficult with young centre backs because they may be playing alongside somebody who ain't too hot and are dragged down by them; and other than their heading and the odd well timed challenge, there ain't a lot else to spot. Elliott to me, other than his youth and coltish enthusiasm, did not significantly stand out from the rest of his defensive team mates.

"Paul walsh is one in a million one in a million to us to us" or something like that! (was a long time ago)

Total numbty as a summariser though.
He was a class player no doubt but can be a twat on the telly!
