Pardew on Reid - Willy? Wonty?

WSSWSS
edited January 2008 in General Charlton
Referring to an interview earlier this season, when Pardew revealed that Reid had pledged himself to the club this season, he added: "I hope that's still the case, but you can never say never.

"A couple of clubs have enquired about his form and how he's been doing this season, which you always regard as slightly suspicious, but that's been it and no one has taken it any further," he concluded.

  • Ken Dodds dads dogs dead
  • If we got a 3-4m offer for Reid, i'd take it.

I think he has the best football brain in our team, but you have to create a position for him that is to the detriment of the rest of the team. Only way i can see it working is in a 352, but i don't think we have the three centre halves to cope with that system.

He is a good player no doubt about that, but with the constant injuries, i simply feel we get much better value out of the money than what he brings us.
  • Isnt it Ken Dodds dad's dogs died ...!!!
  • i agree AFKA 100% - along with a suspect injury problem (that i thought had gone at the start of the season) a decent offer should be taken. As long as its not on the 31st January...
  • when is he due back ?

can't see anyone forking out while still injured.
  • I would be disappointed if we sold Reid, and annoyed if we sold him for that sort of money, especially with Sunderland (and their Irish manager) throwing around large wads.

If we got offered £5M I would understand.

2 weeks from training, 3/4 from playing.

  • The pleasing thing about Saturday is that we showed that we can play quick attacking football without him in the side.

Ok Blackpool were shocking but if we are going to stick to 4-4-2 then Holland and ZZ are definitely he best two.

Said it time and time again, Reid doesnt have the ability to play in that system so you have to accomodate him in a 4-5-1.

I also think we move the ball a lot quicker without him and I think Varney in particular wants the ball early and doesnt get caught offside as much now.

Holland is a better captain as well.

    Take anything above £1.75m

I disagree that Blackpool were shocking, I thought we made them look average, I would personally rather see Semedo than Holland in the centre, but can't argue that Holland is doing the biz at the moment.

Any offer above £3m for Reid should be seriously considered I think
  • I still think that ZZ and Holland are both attacking midfielders and while both work hard and tackle back I'd like to see a proper defensive midfielder in the team espcecially away from home.

  • Southendaddick, we have played far better in 1 game without him. We didn't miss him against Blackpool but we have done in the previous games when we were crying out for a bit of quality. I think Reid is a massive player that can play on the left and drift in, Ambrose hardly hugged the wing on Saturday, it would only improve our final ball.
  • If we can recoup our investment or better it I'd take it.

Reidy has bags of talent but what use is it if he spends half the season or more keeping Cory Gibbs company?
  • [cite]Posted By: LenGlover[/cite]he spends half the season or more keeping Cory Gibbs company?
    Stop making people up Len...
  • I would hate to lose a footballer of his calibre, if we want to avoid complete embarassment if we go up, he will be needed.
  • Salad (or any others), what in your view makes him a £5m+ player ?

like last season when he was in the team?
  • He can be accomodated in a 4-4-2 on the left as Stuart was shifted out wide and Kishishev. Niether of them natrual wingers but provided width all the same. Reid is all left foot hence will always struggle positionally in the middle, I think we would miss him if we sold him and maybe we took him for granted a bit this season when he was obviously playing through injury hence less effective.

He is though a similar sort of player to Murphy who needs accomodating as opposed to Holland, Semedo, ZZ, even Racon maybe evn Arter and Wright who are all central players who are also a bit more box to box. Don't get me wrong at the start of the season Reid was covering every blade of grass but it seems for him to do that in one game he is knackered for the next game
  • Agree with Carter. I think the difference now to when we played 4-4-2 at the start of the season with Reid on the left is that we now have (on the evidence of saturday)a decent attavking left back to work the wings which will allow Reid to come inside a bit more.

As CHG points out, maybe we didn't miss him on Saturday however we have in previous games and in tight games against better quality sides or sides that put 11 men behind the ball, his ability could make the difference.
  • Did He..................?
  • I am loathe to lose our best player.
What makes him worth £5M - well he has really impressed for Ireland and the Sunderland manager is Irish and can afford £5M !

I was about to say something similar, thanks for saving me the effort!
  • What makes him worth £5m?

Market forces - the fact that teams in the bottom half of the prem have 16days left to purchase a player that might have the ability to win them 6 points or so in the struggle for relegation. Which could be worth about £30million. Didn't the inferior Jason Kumas go for a similar amount this time last year.

not sure when he went but it was for £5.5m

I thought Di and Dodi died!
  • Very unfair to say that Reidy has been injury prone this season. The bloke played every game until he did a medial knee ligament which is a pretty bad injury and not a sign that he's injury prone now that he is much fitter than he was last season.

Madness to sell him at this stage unless the bid was silly money which I doubt it will be. Anyway, he won't be sold anyway seeing as he's out until the end of February and nobody will sign an injured player in the window - apart from Curbs of course.
  • And if we did get silly money for him, what's the point of having money to burn?
We'd probably not be able to get the right replacement in the time left, anyway.

Unless we paid silly money too.
  • agreed Reidy injury problems only started at Spurs he was fine for 3 seasons at Forest. He had an operation on hamstrings and has played extremely well this year. His knee injury is one of them freak ones and not related to previous injury which took a long time to diagnose.IF we did go up he is one of the only players I believe we have who would be capable of playing PL football.
  • given the amount of money sloshing around in the prem since the new money started (look at Derby's spending) I think 5 million for Reid is reasonable, keeping him fit is another matter, although look at Curbs purchases for the hammers being injury prone didn't seem to put him off paying big money.
