I remember leaping up to celebrate Leaburn's goal & cracking my knee so hard on the seat in front that I actually fell down about 4 or 5 steps screaming in absolute agony. I'll get you for that Carl!! LOL.
  • Remember sitting at home nervous as anything for those last 20 minutes as we were all set to blow a three goal lead.

How many Charlton games have there been over the years like this one? We look completely comfortable and then do our best to throw it away.

Wasn't this the game that the junior red coaches got smashed up on the way out?

I ripped my ankle ligaments when Leaburn scored against Newcastle at Upton Park. Jumped up and came down on the corner of the terracing. Apparently I turned a fetching shade of green and had to spend the rest of the game in agony on the floor. Needless to say I received no sympathy and the odd kick for good measure!
  • Great game, but even more "fun and games" outside!

In their wisdom the WM Police decided to park our coaches next to, what can only be described as a bombsite.

There were no Police outside the ground as there was a riot going on between local's in another part of the city. Think it was also something to do with Karen Brady refusing to pay

Our coaches came under attack from a bunch of "hard men" who knew we would be there and knew the Police wouldn't be around. Airman Brown will remember as he was busy calling 999 as the bricks rained down!

Btw - they went after the Junior Reds coach.
  • animals were waiting outside the gound,a few of us had to fight for our lives back to birmingham new st,that was one long walk no ob anywhere
  • I was there and I remember coming out at the end and OB directing us back down to where there was sirens and the sound of smashed windows. My brother and I thought feck that and ducked under the police line and went off to get our car. Think I remember phone calls into the radio telling of the junior red coach ambush whilst driving home.

The game itself was awesome. A top first 45 minutes despite a first minute pen. And a fine turn out from Addicks despite the game being on the box. Everyone up for it and unlike me but I was still pretty confident even when Brum pulled it back to 4-3.

Even Leeeeaburn scored! It was with his foot as well I think??

I was on the Jr Reds coach, I ended up lying over my son in the aisle as windows were being bricked in as we left.
I had to get my son to promise not to tell his mum as that would have been his last away game.

I also remember being told by the BCFC security as we left the ground to hide my scarf and not say anything as my accent would lead to trouble. Then being told that the coach was not where it had dropped us off and being given vague directions to where it was. Incredible scenes outside the ground.

So glad we beat them - have hated them ever since.
  • Think this was the game where I fell in love with Richard Rufus. Think it was Donowa (who was bloody quick IIRC) who was clean through and Rufus made up what seemed like about 30 yards on him (he wasn't even in my field of vision to begin with) and made a fantastic sliding, saving tackle. It might have been another match though but it was definitely against Brum. Either way, one of my favourite Rufus moments.

My old man got spat on the way back to the car, which was the first bit of proper unpleasant behaviour I'd been exposed to as a 14 year old. As BDL says though, we got off lightly as our car was parked away from the coaches and the real trouble.
  • leaburns goal was a diving header and he got injured in the process of scoring it, got booted in the head. i was so nervous hanging onto the lead, i seem to recall they might even have had a goal disallowed or came very close at 4-3. cracking game though, great goal from robinson on the stroke of half time, although suspicions of offside

After the game we could see all the Brummie lot walking toward the coaches so we walked in the opposite direction into them and just kept our heads down and gobs shut and just walked in the general direction of away and i was glad to get back to the station in one piece.

I think the game was live on ITV as i seem to recall us standing in front of some exec.boxes and being able to see the replay of Robinsons goal on the telly and it looking a touch offside.
  • Was at this one. Away seats that season were in the main stand - lower tier in front of their exec boxes and up near their home 'Kop' end.

Lots of gestures from their fans all game long.

We came out, saw a mob of Brum gathering, the 'Zulu' chant began and then the sound of smashing glass as bottles were thrown.

Me and my mate ducked down to the left and sheltered in the reception area of their main stand to avoid the trouble - lucky neither of us were wearing colours but was very much an old-skool afternoon out!
  • and then I remember going up there a season or two later and that plum Jasper Carrott was on the pitch at halftime winding them up. Which their ITK crowd and hangers on don't need at the best of times. Can't remember but think we won this one too.
  • It certainly was an old skool afternoon out. Good number of Addicks there as well. Me and my bother stood, sorry sat right in front of the exec boxes. Lots of verbal and some very un-executive behaviour from those blue noses.
  • Think Fanny will remember spilling her soup!
  • Lol, BDL ! Fancy you remembering that ! Yes, we'd pulled the curtains across the coach windows and I'd started to relax, pouring out daughter's and my own hot mushroom soup, when the shout went up to the driver to pull away immediately. Fanny ended up covered in said soup ( in more ways than one ! ) skidding down the aisle - not a pretty sight !

The next season I named my Fantasy Football team " Mushroom Soupers "

We were on Airman's coach & I remember him phoning the police , only to be told that the police were busy in the city centre where "an incident" had occured.....if memory serves me well.

But a great victory made most of what went on worthwhile.
  • Sorry, I'm not making light of the incidents and hope no-one was hurt, but, when things happen like this (the smashing of coach windows), does the coach company get onto Birmingham FC to pay for the damage (abit like when the spanners trashed the loos in The Jimmy Seed Stand) ?

I bet you didn't do that very often...............................................................celebrating Carlo scoring that is.

What a funny little story, Fanny!

  • Remember going with my mate in the car and thinking that the car would not be there when we got out. Always something happening up there been there 4 times they never let you down. This game was the best i have seen there a real cracker but who remembers last game of the season when they needed to win to stay up.With mins to go they were 1 0 up when i think it was Nelson slides in to level the game and send them down. Luckly he missed and we got of there alive dont think it would have been like that if it had gone in. Good old Nelson lol
  • My lift pulled out of this one on the morning of the game. Was fuming at the time. Even more so as the game unfolded!.

Then got all the reports of the fun and games afterwards.....the driver sudenly became a mate again.
  • I was on the fateful Junior Reds coach that day....remember they told us to close all the curtains and lay in the aisle of the coach to minimize any impact of windows smashing. Never liked Birmingham since.
  • Birmingham City - the Millwall of the Midlands.
  • Came out he ground and a voice from behind us (in a thick brummie accent) i'll slice the backs of your legs you cockney c**t

    Still a great game!
  • I remember being happy that the date of the game had been changed for TV reasons as I had booked a ski-ing holiday - had a great week away and got back to watch us win on TV (which , as you know, is a rare occurance)
  • I remember being happy (which , as you know, is a rare occurance)

    You can say that again............

  • Was one of the half dozen or so who got a lift on the team coach back to the station. Wasn`t New Street, the other one, is it Birmingham International? We came out of the ground and they were all just waiting there. They charged at the Charlton. We ended up barging our way into the players and officials lounge area past the stewards.

We told them to call the police( there were no police at that fixture that day with a crowd of over 18,000) and about an hour later a small dog van turned up with 1 policeman. We left and made a walk to the bottom of the road and a load of Brum came charging up the hill at us so we went back to the players lounge.

In the end it was none other than Mr Curbishley who ordered the coach driver to give us a lift away from the ground. It was a lucky escape that day! lol

An interesting way of using cut & paste as you know that isn't what I said..............
