Zheng Zhi is

the main man. Thank God for work permits! We may have missed out on Bolanos but this man is a trmendous acquisition.

Not just his goals although obviously they are welcome but his whole game. He played a few passes today Reidy would be proud of but he covers every blade of grass too. Second half he misplaced a pass just outside their area and Blackpool broke away dangerously. Who was back to tackle the Blackpool player near the penalty spot? You've got it ZZ! He was head and shoulders man of the match for me today.

He's had his detractors on this site and around the ground but hopefully people can see his merits now.

I love him (in a manly backslapping sort of way!) and would go as far as to say that I'd rather keep him than Reidy. A minority view probably I accept.

Comments

  • I thought he and Holland were thoroughy dominant today - worked hard, passed well, drove forward well, and got back to cover when needed.

I thought Semedo did well earlier on in the season and didn't know why we dropped him, but I'd keep these two in as a partnership based on their performance today.
  • I think Pards from his post match comments wants us to play down ZZs talent during the window!!!!

I think Holland and ZZ benefit from having two athletic full backs.
  • Any chance of him running back out of the tunnel at the end, as I doubt we'll be seeing Powelly doing it again, except for the ets.

    Kap

You read my mind as your comment coincided with a new post I started.

I wonder if there is any way we could encourage him to do the tunnel routine even if hes not played.

Or maybe someone else is ready to take over that mantle.!!
  • ZZ work permit means he can only stay and play for Charlton i think. Its the next window we should look out for.
  • ZZ is probably our best player, including Reid.

10 goals by January is a top effort for a bloke who has been messed around in terms of where he plays and it makes me cringe to think that some people have been slating him.

Unfortuantly ZZ has to play in a tournamont for the Peoples Republic of China in Feb :-(
Ever since we gone back to 4 -4-2 he seems to be taking on the mantle of our best midfield player.

I agree with absolutely every word of that Len. He is the best player of his type we have had for many a year. What an engine. I turned around to the bloke behind me after Thomas had missed that sitter and said that I wish it had fallen to ZZ because firstly I am certain he would have scored, and a hat trick would have been a reward for a fantastic display. He and Holland gelled so well in the centre of our midfield.

Is that true ?? Havn't seen that mentioned anywhere. If true and Reidy isn't back or has gone then we are in doodoo.

Semedo didn't really deserve to be dropped but you couldn't drop Holland at the moment. He has been playing really well, and again today. ZZ is the tops!!

Right. We all know ZZ is almost the best player in China and he would play an important role in each match. He absence would be a heavy hit for team China...
  • It was in the programme. Has to play a world cup qualifier first week in feb. The club is busting a gut to get him back from China for the Palace game on the Friday.

Agree with the above. When he lost the ball and ran back to cover and make the last tackle. Excellent.

ZZ is the new Graham Stuart and that is, in my eyes, a very big compliment.
  • Haven't previously been one of ZZ's biggest fans, but have been more and more impressed in recent weeks.

Whereas it has been said of some of our previous midfielders that their second touch was usually a tackle, he seems to make the skill of bringing the ball under control look effortless.

Think we might have got ourselves a real gem, and that's without all the marketing opportunities that could come from having him in a Premiership squad from the start of a season.

As an aside, I saw him in Sainsbury's in Greenwich a couple of hours after the Hull game before Christmas, shopping with his family and pushing his young child round in the trolley.
Might not have spotted him, but he was still wearing his Charlton tracksuit...!

ZZ is the new Tavern? How does Curb_It feel about this? ;o)

i have had that view since i saw his 1st few games for us last year.
imo he is technically our best player by far. his goal tally is no surprise to me as his reading of the game is exceptional, hence he appears in the right place at the right time to score more often than the rest of our midfielders.
his 1st touch is often seen by some as poor, but i think most of the time he is seeing the next pass and incorporates the 1st touch to tee up his distribution.
  • Fantastic isn't it to have a player of such technical ability and vision, willing to work so hard. That recovery tackle on their counter from his error was superb; he must have tracked their 11 (who I thought was excellent) 70 yards.

Whilst we're on midfield, I recently stated that for all his industry I felt Holland had little influence on matches these days. Well, encouraging v West Brom, then excellent yesterday, so I'm off for a nice portion of humble pie. Much better from Ambrose too, especially from a wide position. Interesting that Pards has stuck with him and he went some way to repaying that faith yesterday. Seems that if he's not slated after his first misplaced pass, his confidence understandably remains higher.
  • "I wish it had fallen to ZZ because firstly I am certain he would have scored, and a hat trick would have been a reward for a fantastic display."

We were trying to work out if a Chinaman had ever scored a hat trick in England (couldn't think of one)

There may have been a hatrick of chinamen in cricket ;)

What about "Chinaman" bowlers - they must have got the odd hat-trick?..;o)

i read that and felt sick that he might miss that game especially given palaces ridiculous run at the moment, he's playing for china in dubai against iraq on wednesday feb 6th ... plenty of flights back from dubai so hopefully he makes it back in time and fit for the big one

  • I am ZHENGZHI's big fans,ZZ always do good job.I am pround of ZZ.
  • I thought he was amazing on Saturday, he was everywhere, the best player on the pitch, I think he will allow Reid coming in to the centre at 4-4-2, immense player.
  • Always looked a good tidy player with his intelligent movement & positional play.

Now he's growing into his role and beginning to impose himself on games.
He's developing from a good Charlton player into a great Charlton player.

Could be a legend in the making........
  • Blimey seems like only yesterday the majority were slagging him off, saying "just don't know what he brings to the team very ineffectual" was the general consensus. He's looked good from the start of the season, had a few quiet games, mainly when the whole team was poor or maybe the team was poor because he was quiet, anyway glad everyone can see what a few people have seen all season and last season, we are very lucky indeed to have someone of his quality.

ZZ was very good although for me Varney was MOM. Credit were it's due, Holland had a good game on saturday however I still stick to the view that the centre of midfield is lightweight and on more than one occassion even a very average side like Blackpool played through them like they weren't there.

I will be quite happy to eat the humble pie but imo against a better side or away from home the centre midfield will get sussed.
  • From Pards' mouth:

We lose him for the Crystal Palace game [on Feb 9] when he goes to Dubai to play a World Cup qualifier against Iraq. At least it's not in Baghdad."
  • Holland's views on ZZ.

There were two Chinamen and a Scotsman in a room and the one chinaman said to the other...
