Should we put homes fans in the South Stand

  • All good, but can someone tell me where all these singing fans are? There's amybe a couple of hundred tops in the covered end upper (where I sit) and I'm sure there are some downstairs but it sounds like some people are under the impression that we are locking out thousands of people every week who would sing their heart out if given the chance. That's not the case. there are many good reasons to be CAFC but we are never going to be the noisiest...
  • Most of the noisier fans have been slowly dripping away from the fold due to "It not being the same any more" this was when we went up into the prem and i for one agree with them it got a bit stale fan wise new people looking at you when you cursed people that moaned constantly instead of getting behind the team.

People getting banned for being langers and a little bit rowdy.

Away games in the prem and some fa cup away games (forest last year spring to mind) we had only a few fans but the singing in the concourse at half time was as loud as i can remember.

Point i am trying to get to is that word of mouth would filter through to our long lost supporters that if the atmosphere was back i am sure those fans would surely follow.

totally agree as passionate as most people on this site are we're a small minority in the ground and our support has never been the most passionate (like pompey, west ham , sunderland etc) .
we always seem to need a proper reason to get behind our team unlike the more passionate clubs who get behind their team because they are their team
  • I had a season ticket in the south (before moving up the the north upper), the atmosphere was always good, due to proximity and banter with away fans. Leg room isnt too great but good enough, I was about five rows back so view was good. Dont know if it gets worse as you move up the stand though.

There is definately a need to improve / amplify the noise the fans make. Options, move the singing fans together, force people to sing ?! or do something to (artificially) amplify the sound (move the singers) as at present the a lot of it is lost seemingly due to the grounds acoustics.

henners we have overpriced bottled urine, not beer.... the move to selhurst seems like and excellent and original idea, good one!

    :P
  • [cite]Posted By: Peakie_Rocket[/cite]Has anyone on here actually sat in the South Stand? If so, what is it like compared to the rest of the ground?

A few of my friends have sat there as away fans and they say it's an awful stand. One of those was a QPR fan and considering the state of Loftus Road that must be saying something.

I sat there for the first game back and a few times since, I never had a problem with watching the match, and in fact I thought it was marginally better than being in the old covered end.
  • I had a season ticket in the South when we first went back.......view was very good and atmosphere tops....sat in there against Villa last season....that was lively too. Ive suggested a move back to the south on a few occasions....but its up to those who want to sing to try and make it happen...should they want it.
  • Is the '3,000 or 10% 'provision for away fans' a Premiership ruling and does it actually apply to the Championship at all?

Otherwise we could never have had ST in the Jimmy Seed.
I know we've sold Jimmy Seed tickets to home supporters when away support has not been fully taken up but that wouldn't have been the case v Man Utd in Dec 2000.when I was in the JS stand.

I suspect this year it's actually a police recommendation for ease of segregation.
  • we didn't have the upper west and the upper north then though did we? so we only had to give up half the stand?
  • Good point, Suzie ....... of course, at the time of that Utd match (in 2000/01) our ground capacity was only 20,016
    - so Man Utd maximum awaay support should have only been around 2,000.

I take it the '3,000 ruling' didn't apply then.

Yes it did £3K or 10% 2000 is 10% of 20,000 so we could use the lower figure.

I suppose we could technically offer just 2,700 in the Jimmy Seed Stand and sell the remaining 400 (minus segregation would be more like 250) and still be within the rules but wouldn't be worth the cost and the aggro IMHO.

And FFS none of you had season tickets in the South Stand. It's been the Jimmy Seed Stand since 1980 even if the club chose to ignore its proper name when we came home (Yes I'm talking about you Steve Dixon) and then had a re-naming ceremony in about 1996.

In future I will be refering to our home ground as the Llanera Staduim or whoever the new sponsor this. Let's get rid of all the traditional names at the same time.
  • When we first came back to The Valley me and my dad always sat in the South Stand, loved it there. Blackburn in the cup was the best atmosphere I can remember from being in there.

yeah i remember going in the SOUTH STAND for the burnley cup tie it was a very good atmosphere!
  • I'm with Henry here ....... South Stand? Not sure where that is.

But I have sat in the Jimmy Seed Stand a few times.
It even says 'Jimmy Seed Stand' on the roof facia panel ;o)
  • give the away fans the lower west.........when we played ipswich in the play offs we had both ends as well as when we first went up, would be great to shot towards your fans in both halfs, how many succesful clubs do so, Arsenal, Man U, Liverpool, Chelsea, the south stand also generates alot of noise, and i belive gives the away team a bit of an advantage
  • If any changes result in a goal advantage or 3 points - that should be the kind of change we are trying to generate.
  • Varney says no:

CHARLTON chief executive Peter Varney has ruled Alan Pardew’s bid to move home fans into the Jimmy Seed Stand at The Valley.

Addicks boss Pardew said last week he wants the south stand, which has housed away supporters since 1992, to become a home end.

But Varney has dismissed the plan as "unworkable".

He told the South London Press: "It is something we have looked at on a number of occasions because the acoustics in the stand are quite good.

"I understand Alan’s position but with the way the ground is at present, it is unworkable."

I think we should have a whip round, get a temporary, uncovered stand in the South west corner to house the away fans. Easy access to the Station, Coaches and turnstiles. All they have to do is knock a hole in the fence for access purposes... problem solved
  • If the benefits are there, nothing is truly unworkable ........ Varney is possibly thinking more on the lines of major reorganisation and stewarding costs but with no apparent immediate extra revenue.

Just Varney-speak for we've got no money and too many other things to think about.

  • Why can't we put the away fans in the block of flats behind the Jimmy Seed? The view from the balconies on the upper floors is probably great & there must be plenty of space on the roof.

    Problem solved.
