Atmosphere at The Valley

  • Fair enough, Goonhater ........ but we're not trying to initiate any form of violence or hate groups here.
We're just sifting through what other clubs are doing to lift the atmosphere at their own grounds.

We need a drive to improve the atmosphere, hopefully working closely with the club - the result could be hugely uplifting to the team, making the Valley a rousing and great place to watch our football.

And give us all a much better day out on a matchday.
  • [cite]Posted By: Sir John Humphrey[/cite]I know we're not that great noise wise but I cant think of too many away grounds over the years that I've been to where I can honestly say the home fans were impressively loud.

    I was impressed with Norwich.
  • North stand less than half full today but much louder than a normal league game! just goes to show what happens when people can sit where they want.

Just supposing............you had a block in the Covered End (sorry, can't call it something as totally anonymous as the )North Stand) where there were say 1,000 seats - and you had a 'singing' season ticket that let you sit anywhere you liked in this pre-designated block.....?

Then people who wanted to sing could choose before kick off to sit where ever they wanted - all the singers could easily be together instead of being scattered around various parts of the stand.

And the drummers, horns, etc could be prominently part of it.
  • [cite]Posted By: ross[/cite]if they were to move the away fans the only logical place would be the jimmy seed end of the west due to the police control box next to it. if we had the jimmy seed as the new covered end it would work a treat.

    Some good ideas

Have discussed this and would be a real problem to segregate the West Stand due to exits/entrances/toilets etc and would lead to a large number of seats not being used due to segregation lines in the stand. AGree that it would be better to have CAFC fans in the Jimmy Seed Stand

Unreserved seating is a problem for the licensing authority and the police. They don't like what they see already when people squeeze into the upper rows where they don't have seats. Not so much of a problem today when there are loads of gaps but for most games the upper north is sold out and unreserved seating could lead to arguements about whose seat is whose.

Watching the WBA fans today. Some sung and clapped and some didn't. The singers weren't all together but they joined in and made some noise. We can make a noise as we've proved in the past.

As for free tickets for the drummers I'm not sure that is the issue. Sometimes they can make it and sometimes they can't, a bit like the flag but I've got a Target 40,000 meeting on Monday so will ask about it then.

And Goonerhater, not going to get into a political debate on here but no way was Red Action some front for the IRA, certainly not in London. They had their share of headcases and didn't mind going toe to toe with the far right (and more often than not winning). May have been different in places like Glasow where I know a lot of Celtic fans supported the ANL and Red Action but not in London.
  • Anyone know what today's crowd was?

    12,682 ish
  • henry....anywhere else for the away fans then? obviously we stick them in the east when we have a large allocation for cup games, and there is the upper entrance for the east to halep with segregation issues.
  • The atmoshpere today was miles better than it has been as of late, part of me feels we'd be a lot better of without some of our glory boys turning up, sadly I doubt the club could survive without the money they spend.

(no I'm not saying anyone who didn't come today is a glory boy)
  • Still far too many boo boys there today for my liking. The 6 in front of me spent the whole game howling in derision at McLeod's every touch & screaming for Dickson to be brought on. As soon as Dickson arrived & contrived to miss that last minute open goal they all turned on him with a vengeance. Come on guys, really, what on earth is the point?? Just support the team FFS!!

  • If we are suggesting having CAFC behind both goals then fine but I ask if we have enough people that will make noise to make an impression if they are split between two stands.

The atmosphere was better today v West Brom because no-one really cares about the FA Cup and so the game was a sort of competitive friendly. If it had been a league games with three points up for grabs then I think things would have been different (unfortunately).

We have to do that for Cup games. If for league games you gave 3,000 (ie half) the east to the away fans you'd have a lot of problems with exiting though the Sam Bartram gate at the back of the East and then into Charlton Lane on the "wrong" side of the ground for the station and coaches, would lose seats through the segregation lines and have to have a lot more stewarding. The cup games have been a nightmare and that was only Orient and Brentford. I doubt the Police would be happy either. Rightly or wrongly they have a big say in what happens at games. If we drew someone like Man Utd or Millwall the club and Police would refuse to give them part of the East Stand on safety grounds.

Not trying to pour cold water on the ideas but just pointing out what the club and police have already said to me.

Assuming we could move the away fans would home fans move to the Jimmy Seed in any numbers, as Brentford has said, and would they be the people who would make use of the acoustics by singing more?

My own view is that we need to work on the upper north and get that co-ordinated more with different songs/chants/bands etc but a lot of people don't like the idea of anything planned or lead by the club. The announcer now gets enough stick as it is.

One thing i'd like to hear is a song for every player and every players song being sung at the start of the game until they acknowledge it but others will grown and say "how american and happy clappy".

    ahh....fair enough.

have to agree on the thing about chants. i sit in the east, but i'm bored of hearing the same old vfr, red army and cafc chants over and over again. there was a little bit of 'oh south london' today, but apart from that it was the same old. we get the songs going away from home.....why not at the valley?
  • I thought the atmosphere was really good today, but I think there is a correlation here with a much more exciting performance. With regard to singing, I would also like to here more singing for individual players - Yooooooouga! Moo, Moo, Mootakill. Super, super luke .... ok thats stretching, Izale McCleod, Izale McCleod, He scores us goals, he scores us goal, He sounds like a bogroll, Izale McCleod he scores us goals ..... I'll get me coat
  • Demolish the west (not during a game) and flick the pitch 90 degrees - I heard this sugessted many moons ago but never heard why this was never pursued

The Jimmy Seed (South) can then be extended and designed to give half to away fans coming from the station and half to Charlton through the Sam Bartram. Maybe we can charge them more too!

All needs serious money and new backers but so does every idea to get the club back up.

PS sing up and lift the team is normally a good way to improve the atmosphere - it's up to us for the next 4 months and please ... no more "make some noise " rubbish on the screen!

I think the thir para answers the question in the first as to why this has never happened. : - )

If we had the money then we could extend the East and rebuild the Jimmy Seed. When the Jimmy Seed holds 9,000 we can put the away fans in the corner and put home fans behind the goal.

Spot on. The other ideas may help and are worth pursuing but will all be as taking a horse to water unless we sing up.
