Saturday

edited December 2007 in General Charlton
After a lovely weekend including a good day out saturday for the game my ideallic life has been shattered by the comments on this board. I'm not sure what game some of you guys watched and most of you obviously didnt go to the game but it was without question a great advertisement for Championshp football, Charlton actively played their part in it, all the WBA supporters I spoke to over a couple of pints after the game were unanimous in saying that is the best they have played all season and we are by far and away the best team they have met. Matt Holland was superb, a couple of our players were below their best which cost us but hey thats football. I still have very little, if any, doubt we will finish in the top two and saturday certainly didnt alter that in fact it most probably hardened my opinion. Yes everyone has got differing views but blindly blathering on inanely about something doesnt make it an opinion. Rant over.

Comments

  • Have to agree.

We came away from the game saying it was a great game, proper end to end and could of gone either way. People just love a moan don't they!
  • The trouble is, what is now 'considered opinions' two days after the event, are commenting on 'instant opinions' posted 15 mins after the final whistle. The instant stuff is always likely to be a bit more contentious, but i agree with your point.

I think we will definately be up there by May, but that will be dependent on signing a premiership class centre half and a striker who will score goals in this league. Without them two, we may continue to be 'the team that everyone makes their best performance against'.

i think that is gonna be our most important signing cos i think sodje's form has dipped off a bit and he maybe not as good as was first thought , great in the air but a bit suspect positionally with players running at him and between fortune and bouggy there's always gonna be the odd mistake.... is primus out of the frame at pompey???
  • I've liked Sodje so far, but he definately come away a clear second best to Bedner on Saturday
  • I like Sodje - good attitude and generally strong in ther air. Little naive positionally though and was caught ball watching a couple of times on Saturday - see their first goal for a case in point....
  • I have only just got back home after the game as we stayed south for the weekend, so I've had time to think it through and haven't read the media or through this board. My view on Saturday is:
Yes it was a very entertaining game and the best team on the day won.
We played without 3 of our current "best" defenders, our playmaker and leading scorer went off injured during the game but we still managed to score.
Varney and McLeod linked up well and McLeod certainly showed that with match practice he could be a goal scorer.
If Basey, Thatcher & Gibbs are going to be out we need a left back, Chrissie just can't play game after game.
We need to sign Mills for the rest of the season.
We are still only 4 points off the top and if AP gets some money and uses it wisely there is no reason why we shouldn't finish in the top two.
Finally a pat on the back to every supporter who was at West Brom - bloody cold but we made ourselves heard.
    UP THE ADDICKS

Had a great day on saturday apart from the over zealous stewards and the racist idiot supporters that we (and every club) have.

Thought we dominated 25 mins of the game but unfortunately WBA had the rest of it. Shame about Powelly but he is too old and we don;t have any other option at the moment. Me and Ketman were saying that it was great that McLeod (who played very well) got a goal and we were really happy for him, surprisingly, even the 15 year olds who were calling him a c*nt before he even came on celebrated the goal...
  • I was in bartrams for the 1st half, half time i went for a wee and mentioned something about our goal, my co weeer, said "Shame about who scored it!" - Some people even get picky about who scores our goals these days. I suppose that will teach me to strike up a conversation with blokes in the gents!!!
  • that's a strange one Kap , i mean what does the fruit in the toilet with you want, our top scorer not to score... bizarre
  • and did he wash his hands after?

  • One of the better games I have seen this season & enjoyed the game immensely. The battle of wills between the charlton fans at the back wanting to stand & the stewards was just plain laughable & the most pointless exercise of the day.

As for the racist pr***'s stood behind us at the game, you really need to take a long look at yourselfs. I am not generally an angry or violent person, but really wanted to clobber a couple of them in the second half. Looked round for them with five minutes to go & the group of them must have been about ten had all gone, great support lads!
  • Got the coach with those bunch of 15 year olds sat behind us the entire journey. Thought they were hooligans but they were in actual fact just the biggest bunch of idiots I've come across in a long long time. One of them looked like the charlton superstore had thrown up all over them. Yeah. Proper hooligans dress like that don't they. Constantly talking complete rubbish on the way to, and from the ground. Then after the game they were sat on the coach (must have left 10 minutes before the end) and when we got back they were like "oi jonesy just rung me said there's west brom fans walkin down the road, i ain't leavin him out there on his own". West Brom fans walking down the road in west brom!? OH NO!! And they just stood by the coach and sang valley flloyd road. There were about 3 police 10 metres away anyway. And when we were stuck in traffic outside the ground, they'd stand up and give the old w*nger sign, bang on the window and shout at any west brom fans as they walked past. Then when they'd gone past they'd say "what a p**** givin it to us. wish the coach driver just opened the doors and said you can smash em up" - "yeah innit we'd have killed em".

They made the coach journey the most tedious hours of my life. And I'd imagine, judging from some of their conversations, they would've been the racist ones as well. Absolute, 100%, grade-A twats. Haven't got the coach to an away game before and I don't think I ever will again.
  • I think I might have been on the platform with this lot on the way back from Coventry, they told a young asian women and her child to 'f**k off home', gave a Coventry fan stick, and just looked like a bunch of knuckle dragging idoits.

One of them was wearing glasses, utter knob, and had a face you could quite happy hit hard with a top of the range Woodworm bat
  • Yeah sounds the same bunch utter of idiots that were on our coach. I respect anyone who bothers to give up there time to go and support the lads away but with this lot I think we could do without!!!
Banging on the coach windows calling 10 year old kids with parents c**nts for daring to look up! Get a life lads!!
  • we got quite a few morons. coming out of the luton game recently - two fat ugly little w*nkers walking in front started shouting at a very young muslim lad walking home alone... "bomber bomber" and " you dirty p". so proud.

i did point out that they were fekking disgusting but realised i was with Stu and didnt want him to get his head kicked in on my behalf.

i always come away with the hump from away games.
  • your last line is the way I feel at away games. Horrible stupid kids who think cause there at a football game they can be racist, act like dickheads, and just be a pain.

They don't act that way at home games in the main

Perhaps those kind of people deter some of the decent fans from travelling away?
  • Had group like that after reading last year. on the bus back to the station, shouting alot of racist crap. few people told them to shut up, so they offered to fight them, obviously not bothered who they p*** off...even there fellow fans.
  • speaking from a youngish perspective (19) and a regular away traveller i think it's important for the young'uns to get some perspective and draw a line between stuff that just isn't on and the banter and humour of the day

i'm definitely guilty of a bit of lairy drunken behaviour at football and there's nothing wrong with that or taunting the oppo (not families, but those who are making themselves look hard) as long as it doesn't get out of hand and ruin the experience of others

in the vast majority though, we as a fanbase get it good, our problems are nothing like the sort of vermin that follows other clubs (living in the north and being a regular traveller with the man united lot, i'd know this - best away support in the country but i wouldn't be buying any of them a beer put it that way). The fact our odd minor incident a season raises so much debate backs this claim up.

it's a shame that the youngsters do tend to get a bad rep from some as at some games this season, cardiff and coventry immediately spring to mind, their noise and support held all the others together and often 90% of everything is coming from this group of a few dozen.

and race is never something you should involve unless it is in private humour with people who are comfortable with it, ie. mutual banter
  • I don't suppose this is the group with the blond girl with glasses? Charming young lady offered everybody a bj at the final Charlton Highbury game, after swearing and racial abusing the Arsenal players with her friends all through the game
