Pending suspensions

edited December 2007 in General Charlton
After all the mindless bookings for dissent & stuff over this season so far,
the suspensions were just waiting to happen.

Good timing lads. The West Brom away match next week will probably be the toughest match so far - and we'll be massively weakened.

Sam - 1 match
Mills - 1 match
Fortune - ?

Fortune had already been booked (76 mins).

After the final whistle, was it 2nd yellow or straight red?

Difference between 1 match suspension or 3 matches.

Comments

  • according to the OS and BBC straight red for violent conduct so that's 3 matches pending appeal (if it's frivolous he might be out for the season)
  • From reading Pardew's quotes on the official site, I don't think there will be an appeal.
  • What did fortune do?
  • hit him i think, as all left foot says pards sounds totally non-plussed and in no way will appeal
  • mills does my head in with his bookings. moo2 can come in and bougy for fortune
  • to be fair to Mills, that booking was soft................a real case of his reputation going before him.
  • We might have to play Moo2, Bougy, Sodje, Sankofa against WBA next week if Sir Chris is injured.

Unless you'd rather bring Paddy back!?
  • what if Chrissy is out too?
  • [cite]Posted By: Alex Wright[/cite]what if Chrissy is out too?

That's what I'm saying. Sankofa will have to play.
  • We've got on paper a good squad, now's the time to see if it can deliver.

Players like Moo2, Bougherra, Varney etc should be chomping at the bit to get in there. Lets see what they're made of.

Can't believe that Mills didn't walk over to the ref that he didn't get another yellow.
  • that's where Millsy don't help himself. By deliberately undermining the refs authority by not going to them, they'll be looking for him to slip up so they can pounce. Brings trouble on himself, but i do love watching him wind the oppo up, as long he doesn't lose focus on the job in hand. .
  • Millsy is great entertainment value. Have noticed how opposition often lay off him, Very rarely caught on the ball, and love his commitment, but with that goes regular bookings.
  • Mills was unprofessional and so was Fortune - madness to end up with those suspensions from what should have been a comfortable home win. We'll pay now by having a significantly weakened team at WBA. Spoilt the end of the match for me.
  • Can't say as it did for me.

I agree that it's unprofessional to an extent, but there again I'd rather see players out there fighting than completely dispassionate, it's a passionate game, sometimes things will boil over.....(and who doesn't like seeing a bit of a ruck on the pitch?!).
  • But Weegie's point is that with those suspensions, we've shot ourselves in the foot.

We need our strongest team to play one one of the strongest teams in the division.
And now we are weakened, especially in defence.

It might have made good entertainment but Fortune's lunacy at the final whistle will cost him dear too - he'll be fined, and out of the team.
  • Cheers, Oggy. Who is not a bit nervous about going into WBA with a defence along the lines of:

    Moo2 - Sodje - Boogie Woogie - Semedo?

Only one of those is a decent defender playing in his preferred position, plus it's a completely untried combination.
  • Exactly, Weegie.

Our defence has looked pretty solid away from home for some time now - 4 successive clean sheets - so to go to West Brom, easily the highest scorers in the league, with a hastily cobbled together defence should have been totally unnecessary.

    Mills & Fortune need shooting.
  • I agree with your concerns about the back four next weekend but also think to say they need shooting is a bit OTT.

I think we expect too much of the players sometimes, we all want them to play with passion and fight for the cause but be model professionals too. Sometimes scrapping in this division is going to lead to incidents and tempers boiling over, Fortune had been in a real tussle with that bloke all afternoon and whilst I don't condone what he did and would rather he hadn't - because the consequences are that Bougy has to play! - I'd rather he did get involved and scrap with the bloke than play like a nice guy and let him walk all over him.

Saturday's a test for the squad now but over the course of the season I'd much much rather suffer the consequences of a few suspensions than a team with no fight in it.

  • I had no problem with them 'fighting for the cause' away at Hull in a really tough match when proving they were up for the scrap was fundamental to securing the points that day. To end up getting sent off when we had actually won the match on Saturday IS extremely unprofessional - and rose to the bait Ipswich had laid. I imagine WBA will be sending the
Ipswich forwards a wee thank you present.
  • I agree that it was unprofessional, I agree that he should be disciplined. I don't think it's unforgivable and if I'm completely honest I quite like to see a Charlton player with a bit of fire in his belly even if that does lead to the odd bout of unprofessionalism, so when I was handing him his fine I'd put my arm round him and tell him to keep his pecker up! (Then stand back in case he punched me too!).
  • Passion and fight for the cause is exactly the qualities we want to see.

But Mills ends up baiting the referee and makes himself an easy target for a soft booking.

Fortune handled himself brilliantly all afternoon - and then loses the plot after the referee blows the final whistle.
Okay, he's managed to avoid losing it earlier and reducing the team to 10 men - which quite possibly could have cost us the result.

But the job had been done. He could have just smirked into Lee's face, goaded him and walked away.
He didn't have to lump him and cost himself & the team for the next 3 matches.
  • If he is fit Sankofa has to play given the availability and injury situation.

He did a reasonable job in the Prem last season and looked like he wanted to play for us. Moo2 is great going forward but Osei is a better defender and that is what we need at WBA.
  • I'd forgotten about Ossy - does anyone know if he is fit?
