  • was that the game when our keeper (wood i guess) trotted out of his goal to sportingly kick the ball to their guy getting ready for their corner and it was promptly taken, back over wood's head and they scored ?
  • I sure I remember one of thier goals being punched into the net at the covered end and the lino giving the goal.
  • Have to admit I didnt go much that season, I was saving up for a deposit on my first home :-(
  • My first season (although wasn't at this one)
  • I remember some skinheads invading the pitch and getting caught in the centre circle.I didn't recognise them and didn't see them again.Think they just turned up for the big game.18,000 attendance when usual crowds were 5000 - 10000.
I remember warning notices being put up around the ground after re not being allowed on the pitch.
  • remember this one,I was only eight but another great evening on my old man's shoulders on east terrace.

They were Charlton for sure. I went up to Leicester away with them on the train a couple of weeks before this and got in a ruck late in the game with some Leicester who were in our section. One of them was called Trev I'm pretty sure.
The invasion was when Stoke got the late penalty. Not sure if they were going after the ref or the Stokies at the far end???

I remeber the Covered End singing "Que Sera Sera Whatever Will Be, Will Be, We're going to Wemberly.........". Oh well, maybe in 20 years time eh?
  • Probably a mate of mine called Trevor Lee....he was something to do with the Skinhead mob at Welling at the time, but Id lost touch with him by then. We used to go to all the games together back in the mid seventies....Me, Lee Deverson, Trevor Lee, Pete Robson, Clive Smith to name but a few
  • Yup, that was him. Trev Lee. About that time I got myself a Lambretta and a Parka and didn't see much of him even at The Valley after a year or two. Think there were rumours he defected to Millwall or West Ham or maybe that was another bloke from same era?
  • One of the few games I could get to in those days, I had to work every Saturday. That young substute, Crooks, looked quite useful. I wonder if he ever made the big time :-)

Peter Robson (who reads these posts) would know more about Trev, I left the Welling area and lost touch with the lads. I'm lead to believe that Trev and another schoolmate (John Mace) went on to be part of the British movement set up in Welling, again its just hearsay as I completely lost touch with them. I'm sure Macey was a Hammer.
I think I saw "Dev" at the Valley a few years ago...couldnt be sure though. Bumped into Pop Robson at a recent game after not seeing him for 31 years
  • and 31 years on.......
  • As i recall had we beaten Stoke that evening we would have played Arsenal at home in the quarter final .The Valley was always a good place to be in the 70s.an evening cup tie was something special. When the covered end was in full song and singing no better place indeed.Altogether now Knees up mother brown, knees up mother brown.
  • This was real gutter, they scored with a thunderbolt in the first minute and then one of their blokes punched the ball in the net for the second. We got back to 2-2, and the place was going mad, Crooks went down and got a pen and that was it, other than the pitch invasion. The covered end was a real cauldron that night, the floodlit games in those days were in a class of their own.
  • Autumn 1978....
  • Time flies eh
  • memories ... and some very familiar names / acquaintances from the great away days in the 70's ... including Tel of course!

I remember that - the Busby "goal". Think my hatred of referees and linos stems from that incident!!
  • I was also at this game in the covered end and still have flashbacks for the busby goal and have nothing but hatred for Garth Crooks because of the late penalty. Time's gone quick though.
  • I was there and can remember being gutted when Garth scored the winner.

I find the team line ups interesting , as well as Garth Stoke included another future Addick Geoff Scott at Left back. I think Howard Kendall also played for the Potters that night .

I'm not sure whether Peter Shaw and David Campbell were our most mobile choice of Full Backs and with Big Ship and Les Berry that has to be a massive back four . Interesting to see Lawrie Madden in Midfield also.

  • Had we won this game we would have played Arsenal in the next round. The Valley was always the place to be for a game under floodlights back in the 70s and we could always find time for asong or ten.Just to protect the covered end from the away fans was ajob in its self but had the charlton defence done the same as the covered end that night we would have had that cup tie with Arsenal to look forward to.
  • I miss the Covered End.....sure sign of getting old.....memories......been reminsicing on ADU about some of the antics at the Valley.
  • What's ADU TEL?
  • I was there, first year sixth form; I'd forgotten about the punched goal, but I used to stand on the East Terrace level with the penalty box at the other end, so probably didn't even see it.

Despite that penno, I always had a soft spot for Garth Crooks, and of course he was an important player for us in Lennie's heyday. One of my mates at Uni was a Spurs fan and used to sing a "fond" racist chant about him (if there could ever be such a thing).

Is he still part of the "meeja"?

    addicks down under
  • 35 years on and I still can't stand Crooks.
  • was at this one ....

I remember Howard kendall was immense for them that night ...very strong
  • I'd forgotten about this game. I seem to remember that we built up quite a head of steam in the 2nd half (though I may be kidding myself). I can't remember much about the penalty, just everyone trudging home disappointed.
  • Remember this well, always a big thrill playing a top division team in those days in the cups. Back then the League Cup was a big competition still and crowds held up well(remember QPR and West Ham). 0.2 down and then fighting back brilliantly only to get done by a poxy penalty in the last minute that denied us a reply up at the Victoria ground. We were already organising with our mates to go and book the coach with Lewis` the next day for the replay when they got the pen.

Am I right in remembering that the open end(south stand) was closed because they were building the stand and the Stoke fans were crammed in on that side bit by the floodlight?. I can still see Crooks running over to them in that corner after he lashed home the pen!

I can still picture a few of the Welling Skins charging down the pitch at the final whistle to confront the Stoke Fans...
