  • Remember it well.

5 of us went straight down there after work on Friday and stayed Fri & Sat.

I was 17 and it was the first proper weekend away with the boys. Still ranks as one of the best weekends I've ever had!
  • first away game on my own, i went down on the coach and remember a proper nutty loop from the travelling hordes when the late winner went in(one of those where you ended up miles away from where you were when the ball hit the net) standing on the terrace by the corner flag.
couldn't believe curbs got 2 that day never rated him as a player, always a bit of a crab imo
remember coming out of the ground and it kicking right off just over the road(in a park i think) i proper shit myself
  • I think that was my first ever away game.
  • i didn't go to this game for some reason though usually went down to the brighton games (including that 7-0 one)...i always remember this one though because in those days generally the only report you managed to get on how the game was going was when the bbc's teletext printed out the final score, letter by letter...cue...brighton 3...me shouting 'fck it'...charlton..
    5...

    Haha there's a first!
  • Was my first away game outside London I think.

Looking back I remember how wild and exciting it all was going away on the train with my mates.

Remember it booting off, and it seemed, everyone chasing Brighton up the road.

Christ, it seems a very long time ago now, when going Charlton was a real laugh.
  • Was there one of the most eventful games ive been to

    Classic day out

only 16 looked a lot younger with about 10 others allof same age went into a small pub the landlord was a right decent sort said come on lads you are no way old enough to be served. BUT siad ill do you one if you sit in teh back and go after that, which we did .

Remember it going off as well Brighton chased all over the place
  • That park outside the away end always seemed to have a ruck going on.
  • Seem to remember the Brighton manager having a whinge and telling the press that he couldn't wait till he got revenge for the defeat back at the Valley.

Neither could we as we were playing at Selhurst Park

How many of that side would you put in against Plymouth?

  • I'd definately have in: Humphrey, Reid, Pender, Shipley, Lee, Gritt, Flanagan.

All solid characters away from home.
  • I went to the return match at Selhurst in the directors box having met all the players in the dressing room beforehand.

Won the Junior Reds Christmas raffle.

    Yay for me.
  • One of the fonder memories from the Goldstone days.....went some way to healing the 7-0 from way back......a little bit anyway......Didnt it always kick off against Brighton away? :-)
  • drew the replay 2-2 and said to my old man we should sign their young cenre forward who was class,a certain Dean Saunders.
  • Remember some of the Press headlines the next day.....probably the best was 'The Flanagan & Alan Show'
  • 24 years ago today. Anyone feel old?
  • Just noticed the bit at the bottom of the original post about Oxford winning the league cup.

I was at that game, the day after going to Hull away, when Flan got a late equaliser. Those were the days, I'd like to see the look on my wifes face if I told her I was spending all Saturday going to Hull then getting up early on the Sunday to make sure I had time for a few beers before going to Wembley (and going out afterwards)
  • Can't believe it was that long ago!

Always good memories at the Goldstone and some great weekends despite results not always going our way.

We always had a healthy following down there ... and yeah Tel, it did always kick off - possibly something to do with the fact that so much time was sent in the pub before the game.
  • Shame that ground has gone, I enjoyed the days out there....and chasing Brighton all the way back to Hove station!
  • Flanagan's header on the run at the near post from a pin-point Humphrey(?) cross was one of my all-time favourite goals. Afterwards you just knew that for once we had a REAL chance of promotion because the team looked so strong.

PS: Martin Keown played as an emergency centre-forward for Brighton that day whilst on loan from Arsenal.

  • How many Charlton travelled down for that one? I bet it was a good beano when you played on the south coast?
  • Not half as much fun these days.
  • Travelled back on the train to Hastings with loads of long faced Albion fans payback for the 7-0
  • My first season watching Charlton love it :-)
  • One of my all time favourite away days. I still remember Flanagan running over to the away end when he scored. Happy days!!!
