Date: Mon 15 Oct 2007. Marc Harrington reports Charlton 2 Brighton 0
Therry Racon and Izale McLeod were on target as Charlton's reserves recorded a 2-0 victory against Brighton & Hove Albion on Monday night.

The victory at Stonebridge Road saw Mark Kinsella's side retain its 100 per cent record in this season's Pontin's Holidays Combination League with a third win.

But the Addicks had to wait until midway through the second half to break the deadlock, when midfielder Racon found the net after 72 minutes. Striker McLeod doubled the advantage against the Seagulls seven minutes from time.

But the match was marred by another injury to United States international Cory Gibbs, who limped off with a foot injury after only half an hour in his first reserve match for nearly a year.

Both clubs fielded relatively strong sides, with Paddy McCarthy, Osei Sankofa, Gibbs and McLeod all starting for the Addicks. Brighton's team included Kerry Mayo and Gary Hart, who could boast more than 750 appearances and 58 goals for the first team between them.

Charlton started confidently, as befitted a team that won its last Pontin's Holidays Combination Central League match 8-4 (against Southampton), and captain Harry Arter hit a long-range strike just wide in the third minute.

A few minutes later Scott Wagstaff also went close, but his left-footed curling shot was saved by Brighton goalkeeper John Sullivan.

Wagstaff was involved again in the 10th minute as his beautifully flighted cross was headed into the net by McLeod, but the goal didn't count as the former Milton Keynes Dons striker had strayed offside.

Academy scholar Danny Uchechi was proving a menace to the Brighton defence with his strong direct running, and it was one such run that put McLeod through on goal, but the forward's low shot was smothered by Sullivan.

It was the Addicks youngsters who were impressing in the opening quarter of the match, and in the 20th minute Wagstaff again came close, this time missing James Walker's low cross from the right by a matter of inches.

In the 23rd minute there was another setback for defender Gibbs as he suffered a freak injury to his left foot after falling awkwardly. Despite six minutes of treatment on the sidelines, he couldn't continue and was replaced by Grant Basey, fresh from ending a three-month loan spell at Brentford.

It was another piece of misfortune for the American, though, whose luck with injuries has been non-existent since he signed a pre-contract agreement in May 2006.

Another mazy run by Wagstaff in the 31st minute resulted in a fierce drive that was tipped wide at the near post by Sullivan. Then from the resulting corner, McCarthy's shot was blocked by the head of a Charlton player in the crowded six-yard box.

Apart from a few nervy moments at corners, Charlton looked solid at the back, but in the 35th minute the experienced Hart crossed threatenly from the left only for Ruben French, arriving at the far post, to direct a free header wide.

As half-time approached Arter hit another long range shot straight at Sullivan, but the best chance fell to Brighton striker Nathan Elder, who headed a French cross just over the crossbar.

The first chance of the second half fell to the Seagulls after good work from Steve Brinkhurst on the right-hand side, but Elder shot straight at Rob Elliot.

The second period was a hard fought affair with both sides creating little. There was a great chance for the Addicks in the 68th minute though, as Basey's long ball over the top found McLeod, who in turn switched the ball to Arter, but the reserve skipper's shot was high and wide.

Just under five minutes later though the Addicks took the lead. Walker picked the ball up in space on the right and found Racon with acres of room. The Frenchman then took two touches before drilling a low shot past Sullivan from the edge of the penalty area.

Brighton nearly hit straight back but French's shot from 25 yards went over Elliot's bar and in an attempt to get back into the game, Seagulls boss Ian Chapman brought on Lewis Ide and Kane Louis for Kane Wills and Brinkhurst respectively.

Despite the changes the Addicks extended their lead in the 83rd minute thanks to McLeod's first goal in a Charlton shirt. Arter picked up a loose ball near the halfway line and picked out the marksman with an inch perfect pass, and the striker poked the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper.

As full-time approached Brighton started to put some sustained pressure on the Addicks' backline, but only a Doug Lofts drive forced Elliot into any action, and even then it was a comfortable save.

The Addicks held on to record their third win of the reserve campaign and keep their 100 per cent start to the season.
