  • Wasn't there, one of my biggest regrets of the 90's
  • if i was older than 5 at the time i would've done anything to get there... might never see us play in europe in a (slightly) meaningful game for the rest of our history
  • Went by coach which picked up at the Watermans Arms. One of our mates came to pub for a few beers but wasnt going on the trip...until we all had a whip round,he dashed off home got a few clothes together and his passport and met us back at the pub.

The journey home was a bit of a pain because it was the same night as Holland v England in Rotterdam and we got held up at the ferry port as they were only letting a few coaches on at a time.Although we did manage to pick up commentry from the game as we travelled through France.

Got back to Charlton at about 11-ish i the following morning, a few of my mates went to the Valley pub i just went home knackered.
  • I got my priorities all wrong for this one.I was at the Holland-England game in Rotterdam.
  • same here

    that was Steve E wasn't it ??
  • Yep Mr E it was!
  • I was in Rotterdam as well that night.

Went by coach got taken straight to the ground so couldn't have a drink. Met a few blokes I knew who were staying in Amsterdam who had brought some the city's finest.

Spent the whole second half in a comatose state and couldn't even get worked up when Koeman should have got sent off!
  • was also on that coach , not too bad on the way there but the way back was hellish . Pissed it down the whole way and I'm sure we only had had one video to watch

I remember the hotel being nice enough and having the worst hangover of my life the morning after the game. I've still got a brescia ultras t-shirt which I swapped for my charlton shirt and the lad also threw in a breascia silk scarf with a phrase on the back which roughly translated to "those who are not jumping are all verona fans"
  • This was 19 years ago how time flys.
Overnight coach trip one hell off ajourney but you could not miss it,changed coaches at Dover Docks thank goodness,Ended up with Vince and friends.Arrived at hotel mid-afternoon and drank the hotel bar dry by six.Manager of hotel could not belive his luck with the money he was taking,Smart move on my behalf to be at this hotel and on this coach as after the game we had a police escort back to hotel, well almost. We told the police we had arranged a visit to a local landmark and shot off down the motorway in the oppersite direction only to double back to hotel at the next junction.Smart thinking by not going to say his name, but needless to say we carryed on drinking the night away in the hotel.Police could not see the funny side of it the following morning, but the owner of hotel was well happy.

  • Paul Durkin ref! Couldn't they have used a local ref for such a low profile game?! My first game was in the Anglo-Italian, at home to Pisa only a few weeks after this.
  • I missed this one but was there for the Ancona away match where Leaburn scored our first competitive goal on foreign soil (do those old South American tours count?)
  • Got the plane (to Bergamo?), remember being in some bar (in a town near a lake?), that's about it (did we get taken there by coach from the airport? Did we fly back with the players?). Memory gone..... can anyone else recall?
  • Remember playing at home against Ascoli the same season and getting stuffed 0.3. Recall sitting there thinking their striker was a bit red hot, turned out to be Oliver Bierhoff.
  • Martin Simons said to me we had been trying to buy this player that season.Oliver Bierhoff.
  • Went to this and Ancona.

As for Bierhoff, I thought we were offered him and turned him down.
  • Went to this on the coach, as I remember we stayed at Hotel Belvedere(!) right on Lake Garda, it was actually pretty scenic!

Absolutely smashed on the ferry over from Dover, sick on my shoes going through the Alps.

Took over a bar in town before the game, excellent times :)
  • I too was on one of the coaches with two mates.

I was lucky to stay in the resort of Salo on Lake Garda and can't remember much about the game because I was completely drunk , I remember that one of the other coaches stayed at a youth hostel with a strict policy of bedtimes before 11 O'Clock.

There was an awful blockage in the Mount Blanc Tunnel on our way home and I remember the very bad Radio signal of Graham Taylor's last stand as England Manager .Happy days.
  • Three coaches went and it was one coach per hotel.Think the coach i was on stayed nowhere near the lake,of course i could be wrong. Each coach had a steward can someone put what coach went to what hotel.Think the stewards were Betty Hutchings,Paul Watts and Airman Brown.
  • I was on Paul's coach.

  • Betty's coach - Lake Garda
  • Go to Brescia for just 69pound....that was the headline in VOTV No44.
Fans that took up this offer numbered 128 and stayed at Portese a little town on the shores of Lake Garda. On arriving at the ground the coaches were met by armed riot police who line up to search disembarking passengers. No club shop or programmes so fans had to exchange colours and souvenirs with the Brescia fans. The supporters club arranged this trip for the fans and its something i am glad that i did not miss.
If you have a copy of votv No44 and No45 you can read more of what the editor wrote....Happy Days indeed.

Great trip and just to finish your story off we left the Valley pub around four or five.
