Is Todorov the slowest and most ineffective player since Paul Bacon?

edited October 2007 in General Charlton
Like a different thread I do not like to pick on players but I though Todorov was apalling at the weekend and sadly I think he has been all season.

Yes he has 3 goals so far but I really can't see him getting many more if he continues to play as he did at the weekend. I have seen him several times this season and have not been impressed once.

Step it up Toddy !

  • In answer to the question, no - he is not.
  • Is Todorov the slowest and most ineffective player...

No, plenty of footballers possess pace and that sometimes makes them look better than they are - Rommedahl being a case in point. Todorov might lack pace, but good footballers are fast with their brains not just their feet. The goals he's scored this season show him to have a good footballing brain, none have been tap-ins, they alone prove he's not "ineffective" and he'll add more, plus some assists. The goal at Palace won us that game.
  • for some unknown reason I found myself at the start of the season not wanting to like Toddy....however I have changed my opinion of him entirely, whilst not being blessed with pace he does appear to have an excellent footballing brain and I have found myself most impressed by his hold up and link play.

personally I think he's a great player to have on the bench as he offers something different to what we have up front.

(plus for getting the winner at Palace he can pretty much do what he likes for the rest of the season !)

    Harsh on Toddy.

He was beginning to develop an understanding with Big Chris but Pards changed it and brought Varney in. Not a criticism of Pards becauses Varney and Big Chris have done well together and scored.

However it's asking a lot to expect Chris and Toddy to immediately pick up where they left off when they haven't played that many games together.

I can't recall Toddy getting a chance himself but his intelligent running off the ball took defenders and opened it up for the midfield and even Danny Mills to get forward and have shots on goal.

The fact is we didn't take our chances ergo we didn't deserve to win!
  • Leave it out ffs.
  • Sorry guys, I can see my opinion is not popular but I just think he looks way short of match fitness and sharpness.

Maybe he'll come good for us but I would have preferred to see Izale getting another run out. He desperately needs a goal and his pace creates chances
  • There seems to be a general feeling of dislike towards Toddy, a number of times i heard people groan that he didn't win a header or didnt have the pace of a 100m sprinter, it really started to annoy me. he is a very intelligent player, he links up the play very well, great vision and passing, wins plenty of free kicks and a very good finisher. he seems to be another Kish type player people can use as a scapegoat
  • i thought todorov's movement, although slow, was a lot better than the headless chicken varney

Little bit harsh on Varney Ooahh, but I can see where you're coming from. I watched him closely on saturday and although he put in a lot of effort he always seemed to be running the wrong way for flick ons or else whenever the ball came to him in build up play the move stuttered. Just a bad day at the office maybe.

As for Toddy, the more I see him the more I like him. Sure he's a bit slow and doesn't exactly get stuck in in terms of tracking back, etc, but you can see the man has got a football brain and reminds me a bit of Di Canio in the style he plays - although not as good. Also thought he didn't have the best of games on Sat - but I like him more and more.

    Well they are both Bulgarian.
  • Oh how quickly we forget Talal El Khalej...

Each to his own but I think that decribing him as such is an absolute travesty.

He changed the game when he came on against Wednesday, He changed the game when he came on against Palarse and scored a very good goal which showed his speed of thought. He scored an excellent goal against Colchester. He was then injured and played in the cup (not his finest hour I will admit). The game changed on Saturday when Pards changed his tactics and brought on a player who could play more in the hole and keep the ball with his back to goal. He is in the Teddy Sheringham mode, not particularly quick but a very quick brain and high technical ability.

So slow certainly not his brain. Ineffective - absolute nonsense.
  • I think the guys class, great footballing brain, great movement and when given a run of games he will score goals.
  • slow and ineffective = paddy macarthy.
whoops, sorry he does have an effect, albeit a negative one (IMO).
  • Comparing a class act like Todorov to a limited workhorse like Streaky Bacon is almost beyond belief.
  • once Toddy gets his head around being in the Championship he'll have you eating your words!
  • i can't comment on Todorov as i haven't seen him play, but Mendonca was not the quickest either yet he had sublime touch, vision, presence of mind in the box & the ability to create space. As football becomes ever more about athleticism it's easy to overlook areas beyond pure muscle-power & speed. Give me Mendonca over a Harewood any day....
  • Todorov is a good player. Yeah he lacks a bit of pace... But he's not a channel runner. Hes a play in the gaps, niggle the defence with clever movement player. He comes a little deep sometimes or steps a central defender accross with him to the wider areas with a clever bit of movement... creating that gap for a player like ZZ to get into.

and he does remind me of di canio as Off_it states previously... but not nearly as classy and passionate.

anyways, he scored a winner against CP. he's in my hall of fame.

I also agree fully with the Varney comment here. Maybe Pards needs to sit them both down with a dvd of some games and give him some coaching on where to run in certain scenarios etc... Luke seemed to be running the wrong way and they were'nt clicking so well...
But its really early days with their partnership... 5-6 more games and then we'll have a better picture i reckon..
  • agreed all round

we need a bit of patience here fellas!
  • Varney and Big Chris has played together 4 times, and scored 4 goals, so not a bad return on a partnership which is still coming together.
  • Todorov looks like an intelligent, dangerous player, if he was a regular I think he would be scoring regularly and making better, albeit slower, runs. Unfortunately Varney offered nothing useful on Saturday.

Isn't the point here though that Pards has signed strikers who are all different in their strengths. (I know McLeod hasn't shown much apart from pace and the ability to fall over convincingly). On Saturday Barnesley kept Varney quiet but Tody gave them a different set of problems. It is the measure of this squad that there are different tactical options for the manager and these will work for us better as the season progresses.

Bing, can you stop making balanced, well thought out and considered posts. This is not the place. : - )

As you say 4 strikers, all different and maybe even Dickson to come back.
  • Sorry Henry, I revert to "rant" mode every full moon and when there's not an "r" in the month.;-)
