Darren Ambrose

edited October 2007 in General Charlton
Am not one to single out or pick on specific players, but I don't think a more inoffensive player has wound me up so much.

I felt like throttling him after his miss yesterday.

When a player of his skill and ability (and he does have it) starts to hide in a Division 1 game vs Barnsley, (he hid when the going got tough for the run in last season too) you know you have a problem.

Considering that was his chance to get back in after Sam's Red Card doesnt say a lot about his character.

  • what exactly does he do ?
he was meant to be playing on the wing but every time Mills looks up for the overlap Ambrose aint there . I can understand Pards doesn't want to play Thomas because of his bad attitude but when he can on he made us looked so much better even if he should have been on the right with Reid on the left.

Then he compounds it all with that glaring miss.
  • Do you think it was Ambrose decision or Pards that he didnt play further out on the wing? It seemed to make us very narrow and not get the advantage of Danny Mills foraging forward and whose link up play with Lloyd Sam has been one of the highlights of the season so far.
  • Ambrose is frustrating for sure.

Bobby Robson described him as having a "bomb" in his boots so why didn't he blast that ball yesterday instead of trying to place it?
  • if he's got a bomb in his booots then he needs to take a box of matches with him to light the bloody thing.

I'd like to know what Newcastle fans think of him because I can't remember him doing much at al since his Ipswich days
  • not a fan of his at all and would be happier not to see him in the team but i have to say i thought he offered slightly more than usual yesterday! i know it still wasn't great but he actually put in a couple of (fairly) tough challenges near me in first half which is pretty unheard of for him. Unfortunately though i think he unbalances the side as he doesn't really want to stay wide, probably because he has no pace, would have much prefered Jerome or even Moo2 to have started.

He certainly needs a bomb up his arse, that's for sure. I think he should be re-named Shambrose because he deceives manager after manager who think he's something special.
  • He is a youngster who needs our support your constant slaggin off does him or us no favours.

He's getting on now for a youngster.
  • I just think hes one of those players that doesnt have a distinct and specific role. Hes not a wide man. Or a front man. He doesnt have pace and doesnt tackle. He does have some skill in close quarters and pops up with the occasional goal. But on the whole he seems to go missing in games. I thought yesterday was a good opportunity for him and was really looking forward to seeing him step into the Lloyd Sam position, link up with Danny Mills, ZZ and Reidy and stake his claim but he didnt. So hes getting a reputation a bit like Rommedahl that he doesnt perform consistently and when you need him too. I dont really think thats slagging him off. Its just an honest impression gained over the seasons he's been with us. He would be a second string sub at best at the moment.

He is only six months older than Lloyd Sam who we regard as a youngster.

He does need to become more consistent though. He has plenty of ability and should achieve more than he does.

I bet you loved Lisbie as well ;-)
  • Come on Darren it's time to make a position your own or jog on.
  • Carly burn if you read my posts, you will know my comment is tongue in cheek, however I get absolute pelters for critising Idol the clown when he misses chances, yet it's ok to slag off Ambrose who personally drives me round the bend. The double standards makes me laugh, age wise he is not a lot older than Idol either.
  • He jogs around the pitch rather than sprinting - If you lose the ball you work your arse off to get it back. You do not mince around looking disinterested.

He does not tackle - First thing I was taught as a kid was that if you go into a tackle half-heartedly you will get hurt. He goes even further by not even going in half heartedly!

I was very annoyed about him Saturday as he had a chance to stake a claim for that position but I think he blew it. JT should play there the next game

I dont really think thats slagging him off.

Nor do i. I think thats a harsh, but realistic assessment.

The ball really is in his court now. He has to step up his game, or he isn't going to reach the level he has / had the potential to reach. And that's no good for us, and for him.
  • In my opinion he had a great oppo to cement his place in the side with Lloyd out for 3 games, but he did nothing once again to prove his worth for that spot. There is him, Thomas and Lloyd playing for that one spot at the moment, and in my opinion he wasted it.

Needs to sort himself out quick, and also proved to me how much we missed Lloyd.

The guy never has done it on the wing, and with him and Reidy wide, we were stupidly flat yesterday, and severely lacking in pace - then Varney went off later meaning we had nothing till Thomas came on. Ambrose is better in the hole or as an attacking central player in my opinion, but just doesn't really offer enough for me to get in the first 11 particularly at home. I don't blame him for his limitations, after all he didnt pick himself eh.

Saw him driving home later in a range rover sport with a glamorous looking lady, his wife I assume.
  • Darren's problem is that he isn't a winger, though he seems to have acquired a reputation as one. He is much better playing in a central position. When he & Reid are playing as our two designated wide men then the inevitable happens, like on Saturday, & we lose all our width apart from Danny Mills' storming runs. Unfortunately I don't think he is "hard" enough to play central midfield at this level.

Sorry I did not have my "tongue in cheek" detector switched on...;-)

    Anyone care to enlighten us????

    oh dear god, seriously????

nope, am going to bite my tongue, it isn't worth it.
  • Bloody hell - I kept looking at it thinking it was an anagram...

(Issues about slagging off players who've barely ever played aside, that is rubbish. If you're going to pun on a player's name then it needs to bear some resemblance to it!).
