Nice for us to be the big team
Perhaps its just my pessimistic outlook, but there is still a nagging doubt with me that we aren't as much the big team as we think we are. We had a lot of possession last night, but other than that Varney 1 on 1, we didn't really create any clear cut chances from open play, and we still look frail defensively.
A win and good performance against Leicester though will certainly ease those doubts, and we will then be able to look back and say its been a very good start to the season. Home games are vital to us while the team is still finding its feet.
Your assessment is right about the play last night, you are just a "glass is half empty" kind of a bloke...:-)
Andy Reid on another night could have found more of the killer passes than he did. Tody might have made a difference with his link up play.
The defence is a bit shaky but managed to restrict Narridge to one or two chances only. Please remember that the two centre backs are still learning to play together. Mills is only now getting fit and SIr Chris is really second choice.
My feeling is that there are going to be a lot of games like that last night where teams come to try and frustrate us and try and nick a goal. What we showed is that we kept going for 90 minutes, could throw fresh tricky players on to change the game. We fluffed our lines a bit with the final ball into the box but with confidence/belief that will become less and less the case. Teams are going to find it hard to stop us when that happens.
Thought Varney looked quite lively and was certainly a real threat during the first 20 minutes.
Wouldn't be too harsh on him for missing that chance. Seem to recall that a far more expensive striker made much more of a mess of a left-footed one on one opportunity in the north London derby at the weekend...
I thought Varney looked really pacy and bearing in mind it's his first competetive game of the season was really impressed. Seem to have a good touch and a craving to cut a direct route to goal once he got the ball. McCleod I'm still not convinced by but hopefully it's just a bit of nerves on his part and he'll settle into tthe squad if not the team - I thought his performance upped a notch after that shot from a tight angle that flashed wide so maybe just in need of a goal and a confidence boost.
I thought it was a really good performance last night. For the first 25 minutes we played some really good football but just couldn't find that killer ball. Then we had to dig in for a while and in the second half bide our time for the opportunity to come. All tasks completed successfully.
How many times have you seen Man U, Chelsea or Arsenal play similar games and snatch a goal at the end and everyone raves about that being the mark of champions. Let's not get carried away and claim that but I think we've every right to feel pretty positive about it all at the moment.
[cite]Posted By: Henry Irving[/cite] He got into great space wide to run onto the ball but it meant there was often no one to get onto the cross. More to do with Sam and ZZ not making the late runs perhaps or hsi pace leaving the rest of the team behind.
exactly what i thought.
he made fantastic runs, recieved the ball but no-one from the midfield was busting a gut to get into the box.
the 1st 25 mins we played some really good stuff but we need to score when being that dominant.
we made loads of chances last night AFKA, we hit the bar 2/3 times i'm not sure, reidy missed about 4 with loads of space on the edge of the box... we couldn't get behind them because they defended so deep so that was what we were limited to!

Don't you think it was more to do with Reid creeping into the centre all the time?
This left huge gaps down that side for varney to run into and cross.
Could have done with Thomas or Ambrose on the left,Reidy in the middle, meaning Varney could stay in the box and stick the chances away.

Said the same last night.
So many good players. Reserves playing a hastily arranged game v Bristol City as I type. Not sure if Cory is playing.
Tut tut Mr Westside. Very naughty
