Loving The Championship

edited September 2007 in General Charlton
Absolutely lovin it! So are my two boys. They are 100% more enthusiastic than the last two seasons.
Someone on here the other day said something like that maybe we'd all embraced the new division and all that came with it too quickly. Well I am dreading promotion already. I want nothing to do with Premiership Football.
I really do think we have the makings of an excellent team though.I want to be top till April, then slip down to third, then beat Palace in the Play-off semi, then lose a classic final on Pens, then do it all again 2008/9!!!

  • Im defiantely jealous.....

great to come into work and get the news we won... again!!
  • DJ I agree, loving it more than just trying to avoid relegation. My only concern is that we need to get promoted to keep the cash comming in so that we can afford to have a team which is head a sholders above the Championship average.
  • I think the team has been rejuvenated. The fact that you can go to a game with a reasonable expectation of a victory is great. The fear of relegation from the Prem is so massive that it makes for very stodgy performances. This is a structural problem with the Premier League which can only be ameliorated by have a Prem 1 and 2 and sharing the money more equitably.
  • Agreed, DJ DD. How good is to be WINNING GAMES and SCORING GOALS again????

How good is it to be putting out attacking players and letting THEM terrify the other team rather than have ten men behind the ball and leave poor old Benty chase shadows for 90 mins?

Above all, how good is it to have Faye, Marcus Bent, Diawara, Hasselbaink and the rest of the Dowie Disasters out of the club and well and truly behind us?
  • each to his own but for me i wanna see us challenging the big boys not the minnows of football .....
i want us to increase the ground and play in front of 35-40k , play in europe and mix it with the best ...
i know i'm dreaming but you never know.....................
it's great to be winning games but the quality of the oppostion is what we'll turn into if we stay down for more than 2 years cos we wont be able to keep our decent players and the spiral downwards will continue
  • Can definately see what you are saying DJDD- nice to have something to aim for, rather than just survival.

But i'm with Oohaah on this..
  • This division is great but maybe ask the Norwich or Ipswich fans if they are still enjoying it after a few seasons, no parachute money, selling even more players, not challenging.

I know what you are saying M. On the pitch this season is shaping up to be a good one but remember there has been a lot of pain off it and that will only get worse if we don't go up. The women's team, selling Benty, the overseas coverage, staff redundencies, fewer prawns in the sarnies. The consequences of not going up go beyond the 90 mins on the pitch

As others said let's go up and have a go at the big teams, maybe get to a cup final. OK we may come straight back down but financially that is much better then staying in the CCC and we can have another year of winning a lot of games
  • As long as you're still enjoying it after we've had an inexplicable spanking off a Bristol City or a Blackpool, and we've lost someone to injury because the refs let too much go unpunished...

It is exciting, though. It doesn't make good business sense, and we're cushioned by parachute money, but the rollercoaster ride's fun so far.
  • The only thing that disappoints me is the lack of commentaries on the internet when we're playing away...Sort it out, Henry ;o )
  • can't disagree DJ - My boy said to me after the Wednesday game he thinks it's great.

  • I can see what people are saying about "mixing it with the big boys" but Goddamit this is proper FUN!!!! How many of you really enjoyed getting taken apart by Man Utd, Arsenal and (in recent years) Chelsea home and away? I bloody hated it just like I hated seeing us put 10 men behind the ball for homes games against dirge like West Ham and Villa.

Sorry, but I really feel that this is the sort of breather that the club needs away from the constant pressure of getting those 40 precious Premiership points and, more importantly, its a chance for us to really enjoy ourselves again.

Some of our football is the best I have seen since the return to the Premiership under Curbs in 2000/01 when Claus, JJ and Kins were at their best and its a joy to see us get the ball down and play proper football again.

And as for Andy Reid, well, he looks like he could become a Charlton legend.
  • Bump - got the same issue as you Chirpy - Frankfurt shut today so very little to do ... this search is great ;-)
