edited September 2007 in General Charlton
Tuesday 14th September 1965. Charlton Athletic 5 (4) (Kenning 12, 61, Glover 16, Saunders 18, Haydock 39) Cardiff City 2 (2) (Harkin 41, Johnson 43). The Valley. Att: 13,172.

Charlton: Jones, Bonds, Hewie, Snedden, Haydock, Kinsey, Kenning, Bailey, Saunders, Campbell, Glover. Unused sub: Matthews.

Cardiff: Wilson, Harrington, Rodrigues, Williams, Murray, Hole, Farrell, Johnston, King, Harkin, Lewis. Unused sub: Houston.

Referee: H New (Hampshire)

Len joined Charlton in the 1962-63 season and was sold to Leicester City during the 1967-68 season for £80,000 which was a record fee for a winger at the time.

I was looking for Len's Charlton career stats at Charlton but only managed to find that the man himself has his own blog.

  • I was there!

One of the , if not the, first night games I was allowed to go to.

    It was my FIRST match!

And I've still got the programme.
It's all a bit blurry now, but it seemed every time we attacked in the first half, we scored.

It was just getting dark as me and my Dad arrived, coming through the Sam Bartram gate, and I remember being dazzled by the brightness of the floodlights on their spindly lattice metal pylons, one in each corner, and how vividly bright green the pitch looked. We stood on the vast East Terrace in the same spot my Dad had stood for years.

I remember the blokes in front of me kept moving around and me, being a little squirt, found my view blocked from time to time. And the roar of the crowd when we scored and the groans when we conceded.

A few weeks later we played Preston North End, again on a Tuesday night - and I'm sure we won 5-2, as well.
    Happy days!
  • I love you two. You make me feel young! :-)

I might be an old git - but I was still young enough to play at The Valley in our charity match! ;o)
