The week that was - Len Glover Trilogy. Part 1

edited September 2007 in General Charlton
It seems Mr Glover had a liking for this particular week in September as I found three entries for his biggest fan to muse over.

12th September 1964

Derby County 4 (0) (Thomas 53, Durban 56, Cleevely 60, Bailey og 65) Charlton Athletic 4 (3) (Firmani 3, 33, Glover 34, Bailey 87). The Baseball Ground. Att 13, 518.

Derby: Mathews, Barrowcliffe, Ferguson, Webster, Young, Parry, Hughes, Thomas, Buxton, Durban, Cleevely.

Charlton: Wakeham, Hewie, Kinsey, Bailey, Haydock, Tocknell, Kenning, Mathews, Firmani, Durandt, Glover.

Referee: F Schofield (Rotherham)

Injured: Durban was off the field for ten minutes in the first half to receive treatment for a cut head.

Versatile: Eighteen year old Nigel Cleevely, who made a scoring debut in the above match had been 'capped' by Gloucestershire juniors at Rugby, cricket and football.

  • H&A - Do you sometimes drink in The Alma, Sidcup?
  • I see that Charlton were winning 3-0 at half time.

Then conceded 4 goals in 12 minutes. For those of us who've been around for yonks, how typically Charlton is that? LOL

Respect though.Impressive fight back away from home to equalise in the last 3 minutes.

to be fair, i've seen us fight back from 3-0 a few times but cant recall seeing us throwing away a 3-0 lead...

Away at Burnley, winning 4-1 and drew 4-4
Away at Bristol Rovers, winning 5-1 and drew 5-5
Away at Sheffield Wed, winning 4-1 and lost 5-4

Home to Southend, winning 3-0 - they pulled it back to 3-3 but then Pards hit a last minute winner, 4-3!

Just a few that I've seen over the years that immediately spring to mind while I'm supposed to be working (!)

Didn't we do that at home to Derby c1995 when Morts played centre half and Tom Hovi played?

Thanks for that one Home & Away.

In my minds eye I can still see Lenny bombing down the wing and putting the crosses in for Firmani that year and the season before although I wasn't at that particular match.

For the benefit of the youngsters if you can imagine the pace of Rommedahl, the trickery of Thomas and the crossing ability of Bryan Hughes all combined in one player then you have an inkling as to just how good Lenny Glover was.

He was unquestionably the best winger in the country at his peak but unfortunately by then the England manager, Sir Alf Ramsey, had dispensed with wingers so he never represented his country.

Leicester fans have the kind of respect for Len Glover that we have for Killer.

That also should give an inkling as to how good he was.
  • Didn't he end up getting banged up a few years ago for substance dealing or something?

Sorry Len. You are not the REAL Lenny Glover, are you?
    Or are you???? ;o)

I was at that Sheff Weds one, too, Oggy - what a match! Steve Gritt scored 2 or 3 didn't he?
My Dad went to the Bristol Rovers one - I thought it was closer than that, though think we were 5-3 up (seem to remember that from the Centenary video).
  • crossing ability of bryan hughes

    CLASSIC

    LOL HAHAHAHA

Hughes is (was) a good crosser of the ball! There are a lot of youngsters on the forum so I tried to pick players they had seen.

"Paddy" powell is probably consistently the best crosser of a ball I've seen down there but whilst people know the name a lot won't have seen him because they're not old enough1

Her Majesty did detain Len for a while yes. He's been out for about 18 months I think.
