Luke Varney completed 90 minutes on his return from an ankle injury as Charlton drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace in a practice match on Tuesday afternoon.

Cory Gibbs also featured for the opening 45 minutes, before being withdrawn as planned, while Sam Sodje, who joined the Addicks on loan from Reading just before the end of the August transfer window, featured for the entire match.

Other senior Addicks involved in the behind-closed-doors fixture at Sparrows Lane were Therry Racon, Dean Sinclair and Izale McLeod.

Just three days after the Eagles were defeated 1-0 in the Championship at Selhurst Park, Palace were unfortunate not to claim victory, being denied by the woodwork three times in the goalless draw.

But the Charlton focus was very much on Varney, who has yet to make his debut for the club since his £2.5m arrival from Crewe Alexandra, and Gibbs, who missed the entire 2006/07 campaign with knee problems.

Striker Varney picked up an ankle injury during the opening pre-season match against Welling United, while Gibbs sustained a minor knee complaint.

With the reserve team scheduled to take on Southampton in their first home fixture of the season on Monday night, manager Alan Pardew may want both players to gain further match practice before Charlton's next league game against Colchester United on September 15th.

The second XI game against the Saints takes place at Ebbsfleet United's Stonebridge Road ground, and kicks off at 7pm.

Also on the injury news front, Osei Sankofa has returned to training following his thigh injury.

Well you all know I don't trust Pards. And as Henry seems to think I'm on my way to hell, I'm not sure about him, either!
  • I am hoping that as Gibbs is an American International that played for Feyenoord so not playing at a bad standard, he should be half decent at Championship Level if he ever gets fully fit. At Number 1 is Corry Gibbs at Number 2......
