A record defeat for Charlton and South Stands Jimmy Seed's final match as manager of Charlton after 23 years of unequalled service to the club. In the next home programme, Charlton announced their shock at Seed's resignation. The writer of the notes wrote "yet we who were in closest contact with him, knew that the tremendous strain of office on a man in ill heath, could not have been endured much longer". One must conclude either that the author of this piece of nonsense wasn't in fact that close to Seed or the whole statement was a pack of lies. If it was the former, there was no correction in a subsequent programme to inform the fans that in fact the directors had sacked Charlton's greatest ever manager who, even half fit and given a few bob to spend, would probably have saved the club.
For the record:
Sunderland 8 (eight) (3) (Shackleton (2), Hannigan (3), Daniel (pen), Fleming, Anderson) Charlton Atletic 1 (0) (Hewie)
Roker Park. Att: 36,509
Charlton: Marsh, P Firmani, Townsend, Hewie, McCarthy, Hammond, Hurst, Gauld, Ayre, Ryan, Kiernan.
The above game was Charlton's 5th defeat in the opening five games following reverses aagainst Villa (3-1), Leeds (2-1), Luton (2-1 and Leeds again (4-0).
Charlton finished bottom, some seven points adrift. Top flight football would not be seen again at The Valley until the 1998/99 season.
