I’m hoping to do a few cycling odysseys;
• May Tain Trail in Ireland
• July Ring of Kerry Ireland
• September recreating the Wheels of Chance route from HG Wells book.
And others yet to be set - including the Dieppe Raid weekend, battlefields tour in France and Belgium, Clarion Sunday etc1 -
A week in Valencia in early February. Might fit in a long weekend in Amsterdam in May and the rest is yet to be planned.0

If you like battlefield tours the CL one is visiting Arnhem for four days in July if you’re interested?iainment said:I’m hoping to do a few cycling odysseys;

Do you people not pay tax or something?4

January 1st we fly to Auckland where we stay for 10 days and go on various tours, then we join our cruise for 61 nights where we wander around Australia and Asia until we reach Tokyo where we will fly home to hopefully spring, thus missing the vast majority of winter.5
-
I may have asked on a previous holiday thread but.. has anyone done a safari in Botswana and is there any way to do so on a sensible budget.
It's pretty much the number one destination I would like to visit, but I have a family of 4 of us to pay for and the quotes I got so far (admittedly from a small bespoke agent), ranged from £22K+ without flights which is not even remotely possible... Maybe one of those places I will never make I guess.
Don't need expensive lodges or anything like that.0 -
Why Botswana? Haven’t been there myself but have done Kenya and Tanzania a few times and we have always had a great time. I am sure they will be cheaper to get to as well.0
-
Been to Tanzania and loved it. Botswana looks a very different experience. Far less touristy (I guess because of cost!) and the Okavango Delta is a place I have always dreamed of visiting and canoeing along whilst watching wildlife.1

If you have any time in Sydney, recommend the Bridge Climb.CharltonKerry said:January 1st we fly to Auckland where we stay for 10 days and go on various tours, then we join our cruise for 61 nights where we wander around Australia and Asia until we reach Tokyo where we will fly home to hopefully spring, thus missing the vast majority of winter.
Mrs completed it with a replacement hip, so doable even if you are of retirement age.1 -
If you're including the gorilla areas in your itinerary, it's likely those permits and accommodation which is upping your quotes. The fees are high, but they do put a lot of it back in to continuing the protection of the animals.Athletico Charlton said:I may have asked on a previous holiday thread but.. has anyone done a safari in Botswana and is there any way to do so on a sensible budget.

check out Intrepid - I did theCape Town to Victoria falls tour which included Botswana (Chobe River and the Okavango Delta). The tour went into Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe). All a fantastic experience.Athletico Charlton said:I may have asked on a previous holiday thread but.. has anyone done a safari in Botswana and is there any way to do so on a sensible budget.

Thanks @Solidgone not sure why I didn't think of them as have used them before.1

Unfortunately only a day and we are going to see the blue mountains which for some unknown reason has always been on my wish list. Although in 2028 for our 50th wedding anniversary we might book a Sydney to Cape Town cruise which will probably mean us flying out around a week earlier so assuming we both our health allows and we survive that long it might be possible then.usetobunkin said:

I've not done Botswana but its certainly on the bucket list. A friend did it for a wedding and said it was incredible. Can see how he did it but think he had help of locals who lived there in sorting stuff. Have done Kenya which is much more accessible purely due to tourism industry being more developed there but planning on spending a fair bit of time in Africa at some point. 9 months of a year long career break is the current plan, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Zim (to visit friends, Zambia (to visit family), Kenya (friends again) Tanzania (including Zanzibar). Currently a pipe dream but working to make it happen!Athletico Charlton said:I may have asked on a previous holiday thread but.. has anyone done a safari in Botswana and is there any way to do so on a sensible budget.

If you do make it to Botswana do stay at the Elephant Sands Lodge especially if you like elephants (I don’t know any person who doesn’t).

We went to Botswana when I was working in South Africa. Clearly you shouldn't have to spend nearly that much - that is ridiculous.Athletico Charlton said:I may have asked on a previous holiday thread but.. has anyone done a safari in Botswana and is there any way to do so on a sensible budget.

How much do you need organised. Admittedly we were familiar with local stuff, but we would book lodges ourselves and the lodges have game drives, usually early morning or late afternoon or night ones. We had our own car but you could self drive
Trailfinders might be worth a try https://www.trailfinders.com/holidays/africa/botswana0 -
The Blue Mountains are certainly worth a visit. Some great look out points, The Three Sisters, Echo Point etc and some lovely, quaint little towns like Leura.CharltonKerry said:

I’m sure you will find it a very rewarding day out.

January - London for the Sheff Utd and Derby games, plus want to take in the Gilbert & George and Joseph Wright of Derby exhibitions.
February - Torremolinos for the Rockabilly weekender.
March - Hemsby for the Rockabilly weekender.
June - Algeciras for the Teddy Boy weekender.
July - road trip for the wife's 60th, Oxford, Clovelly, Burgh Island and somewhere TBC.
Got a flight back from the UK booked for the end of August, but not sure when or where are going before, we normally look after Karen's mum in August but if she's still with us then, it will be a miracle (we are hoping she hangs on until this weekend when we are coming over for two nights)...
September - Coimbra for the Rockabilly weekender.
December - Valencia for the Rockabilly weekender.0 -
Not sure there are any Gorillas there. They are in Uganda and Rwanda. That is an experience that you will never forget. It’s a bit of a hike to get to them but …… worth it. If you can, book two days. The first day is a mind blowing so you need the second to actually take it in.stoneroses19 said:

CL Arnhem tour in July, 10 nights in Medulin Croatia in August, the Canaries somewhere in October plus we'll have couple of days away somewhere at Easter, probably in the UK or France. Still got Christmas in NY to come in just over a month.1
